Why aren't car usually made out of stainless steel? Stainless steel mean no more rust - you have an almost immortal car.
>>29027567questions like this always come down to the same thing, which is money.it simply costs more money to make cars out of stainless steel
>>29027567>you have an almost immortal car.But what about the heckin capitalists?!!?!
>>29027581The cost difference is astronomical.Stainless steel is about 75 cents a pound for scrap.Mild steel is about 5 centsStainless is also more difficult to form, which wears out stamping dies faster.
>>29027567if you want a car that can’t rust why not make it out of aluminum and get a way lighter car while you are at it?
>>29027592Fatigue and corrosion for instance
>>29027598I’m not sold on either argument. aluminum boats and airplanes last decades and decades without issue.
>>29027567SS is more expensive, heavier, and harder to formIn your pic these cars made at the end of their model life cycle before the molds were retired. Forming SS puts heavy wear out stamping molds. So, before the factory switches over to the next model year, they make a few cars made out of SS. If you've ever seen these SS models in person, they have massive gaps, dents, low and high spots.
>>29027616Airplanes are meticulously inspected and not considered disposable, they are also designed to be serviceable and repairable. They are in no way comparable to cars which are disposable transportation appliances. Boats are neglected to the point where they're frequently bigger piles of shit than the cars you see in the hood and are not a good barometer. >>29027626This + SS is way harder to repair in the event of a collision. Good luck welding a new quarter panel on a stainless steel car without winding up with a line of rust where the weld cooked the stainless a few years later.
>>29027567have you ever bought a stainless steel bolt? they're like 10-20 times more expensive than a regular steel bolt, economy tier cars would cost 100k
>>29027567Commies might not believe it but Capitalism cares about poor people too.
>>29027649Yeah, they need to get that cheap labour from somewhere and offload all that goyslop to someone dumb enough to buy it.
Its obviously a tractable problem, since the cybertruck is made out of stainless steel If you know something is possible, and its not widely done, thats usually because the market does not want it
>>29027567stainless steel isn't rust-proof
>>29027567>expensive>hard to work >can still rust>only comes in one color, unless you paint iteasier to dunk the whole car in a tank of paint and roll it through a kiln.
>>29027567>drive behind stainless car>sunlight hits it eight>blinded
>>29027567because chromium.
Why don't cars just use plastic body panels? Most body panels aren't structural and are covered in a fuckload of black plastic anyways. Seems like we should just skip the metal. I'm sure plastic technology has advanced from the Saturn days so we wouldn't have to worry about the panels cracking or peeling their paint.
Why don’t they make cars out of titanium?
>>29027900hard to weld large bulky shapes without causing permanent weak points through oxidation, there was an American spy who warned us about the Soviet titanium submarine for years and the rest of the intelligence community laughed it off. turns out the soviets flooded an entire enclosed dry dock with inert gas and had workers weld while carrying their own oxygen
>>29027616aluminum boats are equipped with "zincs" (not always zinc) to act as sacrificial material
>>29027567WTF happened to the 1/4 panel on that Continental (left). Looks like a field patch over combat damage.
>>29027588>Make stainless steel car>Remove expensive and complicated electronics>Profits are now back to usual Bean counters are the reason we don't have nice things
>>29027961>If gas is so expensive why don't you just not drive it?
>>29027592Aluminum corrodes when exposed to salts.
>>29027567Less malleable than aluminium and every car would be like 7000 pounds, which damages the roads.
>>29027961Electronics arent expensive
>>29027968the stainless 911 protype was only 110lbs heavier than normal
>>29027567>WAY more expensive>it's much harder to colour/paint stainless steel the traditional way, if you want it coloured you basically have to chemically process it>stainless steel is much harder to shape and mould>stainless steel is harder to weld on/to>>29027616Airplanes go through a whole checklist inspection of pretty much every single part that can fail or wear out, before AND after every flight. They also don't drive around on salted roads all winter. >aluminium boatsAluminium boats don't last lmao, waves beat the SHIT out of the hulls and slowly damage the profile of the boat making it handle worse, and they deteriorate if you leave them sitting out of the water for too long. They also deteriorate if you leave them sitting in the water too long, especially salt water.
>>29027567stainless steel is harder than mild, it chews up the stamping equipment.that's why they only ever made those one-off stainless cars at the end of the useful life of the dies.
>>29027567i think it's because the body panels don't matter much. they last as long as the rest of the car even if they're not made of stainless, and if they don't, they're a relatively cheap and simple part of the car.
>>29027567cars were never meant to last forever, you could probably do what you say for a one off but for a production car its retarded. planned obsolescence was baked into cars from the beginningeven my old invincible tundra has all the plastic trim pieces snapping off and i have to replace them. why couldn't they have made it with better longer lasting materials? to encourage you to buy a new one
>>29028209even the 50s yank tanks that are the closest to what you're describing were meant to be scrapped every other year
>>29027567In the late 90s/early 2000s, Chrysler and Daimler were experimenting with PET plastic for body panels. It never amounted to anything; whether that was because the idea wasn't good or they didn't think customers wanted plastic, I don't know.
>>29027964Retarded and not on point at all>>29027996>Thousands of dollars on sensors, running the wire harness to all said sensors, making cutouts for every single thing, a mini desktop computer infotainment system in the dash, the climate controls being hooked up to all of this, shit adds up fastYou're wrong, bean counter. If we didn't have what we have now. We could have better cars that aren't made to be on par with Chinese throwaway garbage.
>>29027895motorcycles have been using plastic panels for years, im surprised if say honda or suzuki dont use plastic body panels in their cars for developing markets. seems like a home run for cheaper product. as for the american market, we don't want cut corner cars. they don't sell bc we have mass affluence. new cars have to compete with old cars, which were also quite good.
>>29028496>comparing a small 2 wheeled thing to a massive 4 wheel thing Implying they're the sameNgmi
>>29027567ahem
>>29028570You are retarded
>>29028370>Thousands of dollars on sensors, running the wire harness to all said sensors, making cutouts for every single thing, a mini desktop computer infotainment system in the dash, the climate controls being hooked up to all of this, shit adds up fastmanufacturers don't pay "replacement cost from a dealership" prices.
>>29028370No it's very on point. A car becomes less expensive if it isn't operable.
>>29028597Not to mention, wiring is dirt cheap to install when the rest of the car isn't in the way yet
>>29027651>failed hands typed thisMaybe in the next life you can try finishing school for a start.
>>29027649>FacepalmThat one misanthropic ideology that's literally behind communism cares about you, trust me, goy
>>29027961>Make stainless steel carNPC's do not care enough to make this justifiable. Metal is metal, and they won't keep the car long enough for the advantages to make themselves known.>Remove expensive and complicated electronicsAnd NPC's will immediately flock to the other manufactures that the retain their gimmicks. Like it or not, the market is dictated by the majority, and the majority refuse to live without their little screens and Apple Carplay.>Profits are now back to usualProfits have tanked by 90% due to extremely low demand, and the shareholders want out. The company is going bankrupt, and even the Ferrari Luce looks like a success in the wake of this short sighted endeavor. May god have mercy on our stocks.
>>29028370>You're wrong, bean counterHe isn't. Mostly off-the-shelf electronics are much cheaper than engineering a mechanical solution to most problems. Electronics don't require any sort of wear testing and generally have much better space constraints, so they can shrink-wrap the car around its base components to save material/engineering time. Wire harnesses are built by machines and easily dropped in when the car is half assembled. >designing and integrating a mechanical transmission linkage into the console with moving parts that need clear passageways to their destination, load analysis, machining costs, etc. >vs.>0.5 cent rotary encoder on the dash and a $10 solenoid at the transmission that communicate through an extra wire in the part of the harness that was already going to the transmissionIt makes the car a disposable, shitty nightmare to work on, but the bean counters are happy with it because it's cheaper to manufacture and now Joe Shmoe has to take his shitbox into the dealer for everything because it's impossible to fix with normal tools.
>>29028941>Show BMW overdesign >Blame unrelated companies who don't have problems. At least try to be funny and cute British motors' electrical problems
>>29028970>Blame unrelated companies who don't have problems.Nice reading comprehension, retardbro, that's not what I said at all. Every single modern OEM is guilty of utilizing cheap electronics over mechanical solutions to make manufacturing cheaper in one way or another. When is the last time you saw a mechanical transmission selector?>British motors' electrical problemsUnrelated. Old british electrical problems stem from biodegradable wiring and shitty connections (thanks Mr. Lucas). A TR3 doesn't have wiring problems because of encheapening with chink computers. Modern British manufacturers fall into the same category of all the other OEMs already discussed.
Why don't we use titanium?
>>29028209>why couldn't they have made it with better longer lasting materials? to encourage you to buy a new oneThat's kinda the retard take. If a new company could make a car that was invincible AND JUST AS CHEAP AND ECONOMICAL then they'd do it and they'd win out.Real talk, using stainless steel is more expensive and heavier and harder to shape and people would rather have cheaper shit in cooler shapes with decent fuel economy.
Because it looks retarded and it costs a trillion dollars
>>29029079why not iridium?
