What's the general consensus on these? Fuel additives are generally regarded as snake oil are these as well or do they actually do something?
>>

>Fuel additives are generally regarded as snake oil
Nah, some of them definitely work.
>>
>>29029378
>some of them definitely work
You mean those that you put in to pass emissions tests?
>>
>>29029391
Techron works. It's expensive though.
>>
>>29029371
cera tec was like magic for my high mileage engine. Tempted to try it in my transmission.
>>
>engine flush
A quart of diesel in your engine oil and run it warm for 15 minutes, there's your engine flush.
Another option is a dash or two of atf in the oil, as long as your engine isn't japanese (burns about a quart per mile of oil) it'll clean out most of the shit that might be in your engine on your daily commute.
>>
Definitely seen flush come out much darker with fresh oil than it would if you only had fresh oil in the crankcase. If you got a healthy and clean engine it isn't really needed.

Fuel Additives DO work and make a difference, Motor Oil Geek recently did lab tests on Diesel fuel additives, two separate videos. They definitely make an impact but us Americans who can find premium diesel can just do that and it's overall than #2 with additives.
>>
>>29029612
Personally the only fuel additives I put any money into are 2 stroke oil and lead additives, the latter being of questionable efficiency nowadays
>>
>>29029751
2 Stroke is actually really bad for modern common rail systems. You're better using ATF
>>
>>29029371
I would 100% put this in my engine
>>
>>29029371
Put one into my old 2.4L Diesel xc70. Oil was like water and in the middle of draining a small piece of sludge stopped the oil for a sec and that was only event that happened. Engine didn't explode.
>>
>>29029774
I meant 2 stroke in 2 stroke engines as an additive.
A drop or two in a carbed 4 stroke won't hurt either, especially on older carbs it might be a good idea.

I've also heard of 2 stroke men dropping a bit of diesel into their tank of premix, apparently helps with carbon build up and smoking on top of stabilising the fuel. Dunno if the claim holds any water, I tried it with my 2 smoke bike and it sure as hell kept smoking like a chimney, like it always did.
>>
>>29029847
2 Stroke gassers definitely don't have enough compression to completely combust diesel fuel. BUT, it IS a lubricant, I don't imagine it doing much for carbon build up. Id wager seafoam treatment or a soak of pure grain alcohol after the engine is warm would help with carbon. I once disconnected the fuel line to a carb and ran a bike by just slowly dumping seafoam down the carb.

OR hear me out I saw a well known YouTuber redline a 351w for like 20 minutes and slowly dumped 12 beers down the intake at the same time. Stopped smoking and ran a LOT better. I guess you can say he steam cleaned the carbon out.
>>
>>29029897
Yeah like I said, didn't do much for my bike so I never bothered again with it.
Also I've fed one of my cars some whiskey while drunk as shit one time, was attempting to steam clean the cylinders too, didn't have water on hand, but had jack daniels so I stuck the vacuum line going to the distributor down the bottle

It's like seafoam but it has better stuff in it? What's it called guys? That stuff does wonders for my old corolla. If I don't run a can of that shit once every 6 months, the exhaust smells bad. Also improves the mpgs

-Fuel stabilizer / water remover works
-MMT- based octane booster works. But the burned MMT byproducts destroy catalytic converters, and said byproducts pollute a lot and are potentially neurotoxic. You also have to use a crap ton just to boost octane by one point, like multiple bottles - not worth.
-Seafoam maybe works, if you put it in through the intake vacuum and let it soak in the engine for a while. Maybe works.
-Engine or injector cleaners I am convinced all do not work at any measurable level. We're talking chemicals that barely clean when you put dirty valves in the pure detergent, the amount in there when you add a bottle to a tank is in like parts per million, it's a placebo. Gasoline in the US has to have detergents in it by law already. People want to believe and it's whatever, but I'll need to see better "proof" than I have seen.
If there were a silver bulltet that demonstrably worked when used once or twice a year, everyone would use it.

Nothing retarded about diesel in oil, can clean up a lot of shit from your engine for pennies.

The liquimoly tappet stop noise helped a lot for my 40 year old hydraulic lifters that sound like a sewing machine. Still far from quiet but better than it was.

There are fuel additives that work and some that are snakeoil. Good ones contain pt...something. i forgot the acronym. Cleaning agents

Gas stations sometimes put those cleaners in their fuel. You just add more. Helps with minor clogging.

Oil Additives are a tossup. Some work but only in specific cases, others dont or are detrimental. Some are a last dich effort.

Change Your oil filter and oil every 4-6000 miles, occasionally rip it every couple of weeks
. , check your pcv valve. and in 99.99% of cases you should be able to avoid issues or even remedy them eventually in a sludged up engine.
>>
Easiest way to do a flush is just drop your old oil, and do a change with cheap oil and filter, put flush additive in that and go for a normal (not spirited) 20min highway drive and change it again with what you actually want to use. If the cheap oil comes out black you know you cleaned the engine a bit, if it comes out looking ok you don't need to buy engine flush additive ever again just keep changing your oil at the proper time to keep it clean.
>>
>>29030496
Gasoline is a solvent. Diesel is a lube.

Just add gas too your oil. I knew a guy that has a gasser with shit piston seals...he never had to worry about gunk in his crankcase

Why fuck with additives when this shit exists?
Ran 3,000mi so far on a super loud Colorado inline 5cly.
Already way quieter.
MPG went up.
Doesn't burn as much oil.

Some say once you go that route, no going back. Can’t say that’s true or not.

Personally if you’re worried about seals I’d recommend adding a bottle of AT-205 to your oil. It’s proven and known to rubberize seals if they’re not mechanically damaged. It’s not a swelling agent.

Y’all should be changing oil no more than 5K miles and adding Marvel Mystery Oil to your gas at least once every couple of fill ups. I’ve watched MMO resurrect my leaf blower and keep my mower running well. Added to my cars almost ever fill up cause modern gas sucks.

If you’ve neglected your engine displace oil with MMO at recommended amounts to slowly de-sludge. Don’t use in oil for turbo gas engines, they torch oil.

It’s literally that simple.

Oil additives are snake oil.
Seafoam as a flush right before an oil change works.
Seafoam intake cleaner works. Coughed some carbon out my tailpipe.
Techron for fuel detergent. Since you can get Techron for 6 for $40 for 12 oz you can double up for cheaper than the Redline or BG 44K.

i had luck with seafoam once. i changed the oil, added seafoam to it, drove for around 100 miles, then changed the oil again. it came out black but after driving for a while the rattling valvetrain noises were gone.
>>
>>29032849
Restore and protect works better than Mystery Oil.
Those oil additives are too aggressive and strip oils of their packages.
>>
>>29029371
I like to make the Cocktail: part MMO, part liquimoly MoS2, part Lucas hvy duty oil stabilizer and I add a bit as my 4runner burns oil. 250k miles and going even thought it's probably retarded and literally no better than good synthetic. Can't find restore and protect where I live tho...

just need to capture the dead boomer spirits of BITOG forum posters into some sort of unholy automotive phylactery and use that on your engine.

I've gotten banned from BITOG a few times.
It's fun to make disguised "5w30 too thick" posts.
I'll even fake Blackstone lab data showing 0w-20 preforming better

Fun times.

It's basically kerosene with a mineral oil base and some other detergents.
It works, it's been used for the better part of a century.

I don't know how necessary it is with modern synthetic oils and short oil intervals, probably not very if at all, but for $20 who gives a fuck.

I have a turbo engine that is a gasoline direct injection. What should I do?

I used to by Zmax for years but eventually stopped.
In my Prelude's owners manual it states the engine does not need such additives.
