AFAIK the only large scale production of V8 Diesels in passenger cars were the 3.6 and 4.4 TDV8/SDV8 engines used in the L322 and L405 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport>inb4 BMW, Mercedes and Audi had V8 dieselsThese sold nowhere near on the scale that the Land Rover V8 Diesel sold, and were niche, even at the time
Imagine the smellImagine the noiseImagine the incessant shaking
>>29029439If you care about engines, you don't get a diesel. Diesel engines were invented for poorfag slavs to hit good MPG with engines that lasted forever.
>>29029439>ford engineslol
>>29029559The higher executives had diesels because they ran at lower revs at highway speeds
>>29029439Because of the history of gasoline being a byproduct turned into fuel, diesel and kerosene are more seen as workhorse fuels with their greater power density and lower refinement costs while gas v8s were more for consumer use instead of commercial
>>29029600I have an 07 E320 with the OM642 V6, it's a nice highway cruiser for sure.
>>29029515>>29029559You're both retarded.I think the reason why you don't see many factory passenger cars with diesel V8s is due to lack of demand. I always thought a large Duramax or Powerstroke would be fun in a traditional sedan. I do greatly enjoy my TDI. I can't find the picture right now but some absolute madlad dropped a 7.3 IDI into a Chevy 210 (Bel Air). Definitely a troll build but I love it.
>>29029619>oldsmobile's poorly converted gas to diesel motors killed appeal for boomers>emissions equipment requirements killed appeal for xers>german dieselgate killed demand for millenials and zoomersI was personally looking forward to Skyactiv-D but the krauts ruined that possibility.
>>29029559>Diesel engines were invented for poorfag slavseuropeans in general* and it's because europeans cannot into reliable gasoline engines. so a diesel is basically europeans indirectly admitting that the american way of building engines is actually superior. they point and laugh at an american V8 making 150 HP in the smog era and that they could make more with less displacement, but when they needed their shit to actually last more than 100k miles, they hopped in a diesel that made 50 HP and redlined at 4k RPM.
>>29029641They did sell the diesel CX-5 here for 2019 only
>>29029644Mercedes used to make some great gassers, like the M112 and 113. What happened?
>>29029515>Imagine the smellMostly a myth>Imagine the noiseMostly a myth>Imagine the incessant shakingMostly a mythAny additional gaslighting that you have to share, Kike?
>>29029677Look, a busrider. Or not, since a busrider surely would know how a diesel feels.
>>29029641AFTER dieselgate, BMW and Chevy were selling Diesel passenger cars, although my friend at the Stealership said to avoid to Equinox and Cruze because parts are nightmare to find. Yeah it is a shame Mazda didn't have the balls to try selling it here, would love one as a daily. As far as emissions requirements go most of the geographic area of the United States doesn't test Diesel passenger emissions. I live in an area that tests all GAS cars but my TDI is exempt and therefore it's deleted. Especially now that the Feds have announced they won't prosecute those who delete there is no excuse unless you live in a Dystopian Democrat state that does emissions and/or inspections on small diesels
>>29029439you don't need that kind of power, it's not optimal.
>>29029439Ask Oldsmobile.
>>29029439>diesel>noisy>smelly>for poorfags or for industrial purpose where bottom line is everything>but even euro luxury-well europe is poor, any other question?
>>29029439OP, answer the following questions: -What advantage would a 3.6 or 4.4 diesel engine have in a passenger car over current V8s, NA or otherwise?-How much heavier would a diesel engine be over a current V8? And if significantly heavier, how much would the suspension and front cradle need to change?-How much would fueling any vehicle with a diesel cost compared to a normal V8. We'll assume 25mpg gasoline at $3.65 per gallon, and 30mpg diesel at $4.80. These are current prices at a local station, I have no idea if a smaller diesel would even get more MPG, and I don't know how much a current year V8 gets. -What maintenance difference is there for diesel engines? I'm only vaguely aware they always cost more because the oil and filter are more expensive, injectors are more expensive, DEF systems are fragile and stupid, DEF costs money every couple thousand miles, and diesel shops simply charge more. -Lastly, not all fueling stations have diesel. What percentage of fueling stations have diesel?
>>29029988I neglected to ask how much a diesel upgrade would cost, but that may be slightly irrelevant once you answer my questions. Plus there simply weren't that many diesels as an option vehicles in the US. Last I heard on the Dodge Ram 1500 between a Hemi V8 and an Ecodiesel engine it was something like a $6500 option. It did get 30-35mpg in a pickup truck, but doing the math with diesel consistently $0.50-1.50 more expensive per gallon, you'd have to drive that same truck like 15,000 miles per year for like 14 years to break even assuming a dodge product even made it that far. Compare that to the 2008 F250: Base V8 to a Triton V10 is like a $600 option. Triton package to a Powerstroke V8 was a $6000+ option coming with much more towing capability.
>>29029938My modern TDI is deleted. Doesn't smell. More quiet than half the gas cars I encounter, it's emissions exempt where I live which greenlights me to modify it more. You're a faggot and probably a dumb nigger Wrenchlet.
>>29030955All diesels stink. Even I who has had and used hundreds of diesel vehicles in the last 10 years from several first world countries and several 3rd world countries ( and I currently own a factory no emissions common rail 2025 YD25 high power) will tell you that even in the car if you are going slower than the tail wind it will stink you out.You are like one of those cat owner who insists cats don't smell but everyone can tell you own cats just by your reeking clothes even when you are out in the field.
Diesel V8s are extremely based. When I hear a Rangie with that mysterious half tractor-half muscle car sound it turns my head immediately. And mad respect for anyone DDing a sub-20mpg diesel in this day and age.
>>29030995You say that as if gassers don't stink too. They all smell. If you worked in a shop environment you would know. I can't believe you are this retarded or your nose doesn't function.
>>29029439Gasoline V8s are hard enough to work on before you have to deal with packing turbos into the mix, diesel V engines barely even fit into huge truck engine bays, let alone car ones
>>29031112Sure you can smell gas too, but it is not nearly as bad as diesel. I daily a V6 Diesel and that thing is just disgusting how it smells at idle. Great fuel economy for a boat this size.
>>29029559I would say I care about engines and I like diesel because they last forever.
Diesel and petrol both smell nice
>>29029439>inb4 BMW, Mercedes and Audi had V8 diesels>These sold nowhere near on the scale that the Land Rover V8 Diesel sold, and were niche, even at the timeWell as an American even those are niche to me, the only RR I ever owned had a V8 (4.6L Rover in a P38) since that's all that we've ever seen. I'll still fucking mention something like the W211 E420 CDI, because 300HP and 500+HP TQ and a 0-60 of nearly 5 seconds flat, all from a 20 year old diesel powered car that's stock, mind you, is pretty damn good.Passenger V8 diesels are something that would've made complete sense in something like '70s or '80s America, but lazy burger engineers just tried to reengineer gasser V8s into diesels and ended up building a bunch of unreliable boat anchors, leaving the Europeans and their engineering autism to just sell us 4-6 cylinder diesel cars instead since a V8 diesel would've probably been seen as "inefficient". It's just a shame we never got some of the better diesels that still predate DEF, though I'll also mention I've actually looked into importing something like a TDV8 L322 Range since they now seem dirt cheap and are supposedly "good" compared to the money pit models we get (and are also now ~25 years old).
>>29031170I was just behind a beaner in a 90s Camry and thing stank worse than my OM606 did when the injectors needed replacing
>>29031489Based
>>29031112>If you worked in a shop environmentkek, stay in your covered cubicle princess. I bet you have actual good days at work.Comparing a good working gasser and a good working diesel is night and day you absolute fucking tard10/10
>>29030955>Doesn't smellHow do you know? It's not like you're behind it as you're driving it.And if you want diesel reek get behind an 80's Ford with the n/a Navistar sometime. The Olds diesel were only marginally better. Keep in mind these were the vehicles that set the stage for light duty diesel in the US. It wasn't until Dodge threw a hail mary by putting a Cummins turbodiesel in their pickup that diesel began to be accepted by rednecks because you could turn the things up easily. If they'd been like modern diesels they would have flopped just as bad as the Oldsmobiles
>>29029926That has nothing to do with the virtue or whatever of diesel v8s. That’s what happens when Gentile Motors decides they can’t spend a single more shekel to manufacture their engines.
I wish we got 4.2 v8 tdi here the 4.8 gas is nice and quick but the tdi is the same performance and way more range. Probably would last more kms if a little more maintenance intensive idk if any euro anons have experience and I guess it has the torsen dif like the v6 diesel
>>29029677with the economy in europe, so is the diesel itself too!
>>29031513the real debate is comparing a busted ass gas engine to a comparatively busted diesel
>>29029559You're a retard.Diesel = torque. Diesel is for rugged work vehicles.
How has nobody mentioned the Landcruiser yet?
>>29029439diesels benefit greatly from being turbochanged, and are also unaffected by knock and preignition, so can be boosted a LOTand they also require a somewhat stouter engine blockand they dont really need to have high HP, people who want that go for petrol engines instead. diesels are for economy and torqueoh, a diesel sounds shitty, so you lose one of the best things about having a v8 anywayall of those factors, especially the first one, make a inline 6 a much better fitthe long and thin shape of an inline 6 naturally leaves space for a comfy turbo setup with easy access to the side of it. and, you only need 1 of them, whereas in a V engine, by its geometry, kinda needs 2 turbos (and 2 turbo manifolds, and 2 waste gates, and often 2 intercoolers and 2 sets of piping)and if you need to make a really stout block, only having to make an inline 6 (which you can also chop down to inline 4 for less demanding applications) is a lot less weight and cost than a v8and, as it turns out, if you can dump silly amounts of boost in it, which you can with a diesel, a inline 6 is perfectly capable of making stupid amounts of HP and even more torque really, a v8 is best suited to either being a simple NA petrol, or at most superchargedthe euros who have messed with turboed Vs have created unmaintainable monsters that lost 80% of their value after the warranty expires. esp hot Vs
>>29031818euroids didnt get it so out of pure cope they pretend it doesnt exist
>>29029439Mutts are incompetent and cucked themselves out of anything good.Golems gonna golem.
>>29029439let's all think really hard about it and maybe it will come to us
Same reason nobody wanted a kei truck. Engine doesnt match the use case>whiny tinny little motor meant for dropping vegetables 10 km away
>>29032802In my opinion I really love the raw sound of a well maintained and tuned diesel. Then again I'm a bit of a freak and got a massive hard on for old steam tractors too. 102 Horsepower but 8000 ft lbs of torque.>>29031513Interesting, my friend has a 460 rocking two 4 barrels and it sure has a very strong odor behind it. I remember buying a brand new lawn mower 10 years ago and it sure smells. Last I checked both engines are gassers. My coworker got a 2020 mustang that's straight piped. You can smell it whenever he leaves.>>29031529My buddy followed me on an hour drive that's how I know. I simply quizzed him when we got to our destination. Only smelled when I a 30mph-90 pull merging on the highway and again it's been modified. Yes, I used to own both a 7.3 IDI and an OM606. Both ran exclusively off waste oil. They sure stank real good. I l loved it
