Deer don't have the best night vision and prefer to see where they're going, which is also why they're also so easy to hunt in the dark, since they're fairly stationary. The problem is the part of the brain that runs calculations (the intraparietal sulcus) is much smaller in deer. So they see a cars headlights and, when it's sufficently bright, use it to cross the road. Unfortunately they're not able to judge the "will I make it in time" factor with any reliable accuracy.
