The guy who rear ended me last year (I was stopped at a red) had a ‘20 Camry with ABS. Still left 16 feet of tire skid from braking, I made the cop measure it.
I guarantee the ABS/ESP system was stock in the OP BMW. These systems are supposed to work with any tires or brake pads, they are always made by the same few 3rd party suppliers everyone else uses.
I guess shifting all the weight to one side in such a heavy vehicle at such speed was too much for the system to handle.

My dad was an ER doctor and before medicine he was an EMT. When I got my license he showed me pictures he took of patients at the scene of the accident. Dead people, decapitated motorcyclists, some organs here and there, I can remember them vividly. I was disgusted at first but damn, I had my license for 15 years now and never had an accident, nor do I drive recklessly. A few years ago when I got different car that had more power I was in a situation on a country road where two lanes were merging into one. I had power to spare so I floored it to get passed a few slower cars so I could get ahead of the pack.
I'm always careful to judge things regarding others speed and distance of road I have left, but by the time I got to the car I was going to get in-front of, I faintly clipped the right side of the road where the dirt and gravel was, which could have had me spin out/go out of control, and I was going over 65 mph. I had a horrible feeling run through my body after that, and my spouse was in the car too, who 100% trusts me with my driving, says it not as bad as I remember it. I have always felt awful about that because its the what if that stresses me.

Another thing is to pay attention when there are slowdowns on the highway. That I am usually careful with. I was driving an older beater at the time and I looked down to fiddle with the radio for one fucking second and I see brake lights infront with no time to spare. Knowing my spacial awareness in that second I knew I had no car on the other side of me, I had no choice but to serve into the lane next to me to avoid almost rear ending the car. I had to cut the wheel so hard doing about 60 mph I though I was going to flip this old Jap sedan I was driving. I maintained control of the car though, that one also sits in my mind.

Go slow, give lots of space, pay attention.

1. BMW had too much Velocity / Kinetic energy to "tuck in" behind slow car
2. Slow car tried to help by braking, to open a very narrow window to pass (as an option)
3. BMW braked hard and locked up or lost traction, thus initiating the spin

That was never going to work, and if it did, he would have gotten involved in the crash as well, as I bet the BMW would have had its front left and rear right clipped by both the truck and sedan (had he not spun out but managed to squeeze in).
If the sedan had sped up as to not get rear ended so the BMW could get behind him? Maybe, but not likely.
Either way BMW driver was simply too fast and reckless and it cost him everything.

Not him, but my father was a police officer and when I went to their place for something with him, they always had some picture of an accident as the computer background, one day a hell of a lot of years ago, they literally had a picture of the front door of their office where someone dropped a garbage bag with a dismembered person inside.

When you consider only the impact on one car, he's right. It's counterintuitive but hitting an opposite-direction 50 mph car at 50 mph is the same as hitting your car into a wall at 50 mph.
