The engines are solid, Ford is still farming tech from Mazda's partnership of the era.They all tend to have rust issues of some form or another, they used a gay "aqua tech" water based paint at the time and it is about as bad as it sounds. The 2.0 and 2.3 are reliable engines if you do regular fluids and plugs on time. I had a 2006 Mazda3 and it was a good little car until some careless twit smashed into me. The Focus and Mazda3 are good and reliable up to 200,000 miles, get a manual transmission if you can though - especially on the 2.0 engines.

They also had a known issue with the cable connecting the battery to the starter motor - it would vibrate loose and just drop off sometimes and you'd have no start. I had a manuel so I could push start it when that happened but it's a bad thing if you're unaware.

The 2nd gen Focus was what shared the platform with the 3 and S40/C30. The '03-'11 Duratec powered Focus with the MTX75 will easily run 300k miles. Many examples already have. The auto in them is also far more reliable than the '12+ powershitthebed.

Preddy gud cheap econo boxesWeirdly good suspension for what they are, same design went into Mazda 3s and later focus models (people even swap mk3 rear subframes into mk1, they're the same part). The duratec is a very good unit, a lot less finicky than the zetec that came prior. The only major quirk with them is to never loosen the crank pulley unless you want to re-time the engine (no woodruff key on the crank, it's only held in time via friction). you'll get a little more power with the 2.3 but it was only available as a top trim sedan in those years. Some common issues are always the passenger motor mount, if the car is pretty buzzy then 90% chance it's that. Only buy an OEM Ford one because aftermarket ones don't hold up. They also have funky thermostat that's under the intake but it's a pretty simple job.

Probably good. Everyone rightfully shits on the Power shift, but my 2014 with the latest TCM for the power shift is working excellently. Eventually I can just swap the MTX75 in when it finally gives out. Personally I'd just recommend a 2012-2018 with the manual, naturally aspirated if you wanted an econobox. They really don't need much care, just keep on top of your consumables. Handle very well and are cheap to buy because of the DCT reputation. If you can only get one with a DCT then get the new TCM asap or pay a mechanic to swap the transmission, it's a bolt on and reflash.
