Too expensive
Too ugly
Too cucked by regulations
Too time consuming to maintain
But mostly to expensive for a younger generation that can barely afford rent as is.
>>
>>29032032
its mostly the first point
people are mad cos poor
thats why they cope by blaming modern tech and designs. surely thats why dont buy new cars lmao
>>
>>29032039
Yeah most of his talking points are bullshit when we all know the real reason which is price.

I'll actually develop my opinions. Cars aren't as vital to young people lives as for previous generations. We've replaced so much of our lives with digital apps. We talk digitally, socialize digitally, are productive digitally, even dating digitally. Whereas 30 years ago, you couldn't do any of those things without going to a place. Also families are shrinking and some times not even happening. The creation of families is what has driven car purchases in the past. Young people don't care, want or can't have families.

The video talks a lot about muh tablets, muh technology but honestly most normalfags love that shit. They want their cars to have the same features as their phones. It's not a negative. When petrol heads make these videos, they don't realize car ownership has never been about the smell of gas or the sound of the engine. It's always been about having a function in one's life. I'm reminded of that scene from Mrs Robinson where the lead character drives across the country to find the love of his life. That's not even a plausible scenario today. Technology has made that type of voyage unneccessary.
>>
>>29032039
>modern tech

means that you cant diy/fix and the labor/parts went up when they inevitably break as a side effect

new cars are fucking gay desu average labor rate at dealers here is $200-250/hr even shops arent far behind at $150/hr
>>
>>29032049
Most people were incapable of fixing mechanical issues too. This issue is something only people skilled with mechanical components complain about, for normalfags it hardly makes a difference if the error is mechanical or electrical. They're going to get robbed regardless.
>>
>>29032061
Used cars have always been better purchases than buying brand new. But I agree that the gap is wider today with modern cars just being endless migraine sessions of electronic safety.
>>
>>29032059

the bar is getting higher when stuff like hyundais have starters that require the engine to get dropped as a cradle and canbus/dealer tools require scantools to do brake jobs and any higher level diag

i disagree, youtube + chatgpt made it so a lot of normies are comfortable wrenching on <2010s cars but the newer stuff is getting to the point its genuinely disposable and the normies that dont want to work on their shit find it easier to trade/junk the car in when the repairs cost more than the book value of the car (not helped by ridiculous labor rates which are a side product of cars getting more difficult/expensive to wrench on...if a repair now requires a lift and a lift cart to do a job and the job has you dropping the cradle the shop going to pass the cost onto you)

I would happily spend 50k on a sports car if it were better than my frs. The fact of the matter is there isn't. Even the new Gen brz/gr86 are gimped and neutered despite the extra hp.

Companies need to stop making cars that work for everyone. A sports car should be good at one thing. Sport car racing. Thats literally it. And the price should dictate how good it is at that one thing. Too many cars try to be "everything" cars and end up being nothing cars. I get it, nobody would pay 50k for a car with no sound proofing and no carpets, but i would buy it.
>>

i mean...what you want exists. alfa 4c and lotus emira to a lesser extent. maybe a mclaren. all of which sold really poorly. i guess the closest new equivalent is a nd3 mx5.

part of the problem is the people who have the money to buy a sports car overwhelmingly is 50+. i saw a article saying that now the 400z is selling well because its all geriatric boomers who owned 240zs and 300zxs wanting one

>I'll actually develop my opinions. Cars aren't as vital to young people lives as for previous generations
This is anecdotal but all the people I know under 35 all live <30 miles from their work. This limits where they can work(mostly retail shit and pharmacies) which limits their income which makes. Car impossible yo afford. They don't want a middle class job, they want whatever is quickest and easiest that allows them enough money to buy doordash and say exorbitant rent. It's madness and they look at me like I'm some sort of super human because I have a Car to get to a decent job(where boomers shit themselves in their desks rather than retire) and know how to save cash for more than thirty days.
It's really depressing, because gen A/z are going to end up boomers 2.0 when shit really breaks

No, not really, there are zero cars or trucks that excite me. Nothing being made today interests me at all. On the other hand there are about 20+ motorcycles that I want to try out.

Many people can’t afford new cars, and maintaining used cars is getting more and more expensive. Parts are drying up on pre-rolling-computer models, and I know I’m getting gouged by the shop, but there are some things I can’t wrench.
New cars also suck. My local dealer has tried to dodge warranty work multiple times on the wife-mobile because they lose money on it. I had to apply considerable arm-twisting to get it done, then they cross-threaded the oil plug, permanently damaging the threads causing a major oil leak. They denied doing it, but graciously offered to replace the pan for only $1000. I can’t even replace the battery on her car without the appropriate scantool, it has to be “paired” to the car.
My boomer parents have had their brand new Toyota in for warranty work multiple times and it’s barely a year old. New cars are expensive and shit at the same time. What a time to be alive!
>>
yeah too much shit is reliant on specialized diagnostic software to even access, the whole point of obd is defeated when you need a subscription to use a single purpose computer you already bought just to reset a maintenance interval
>>
Cars got technologified and are an appliance no different from a smart phone.
Some might go as far to say that modern cars are smartphones with wheels.
The surveillance systems have reached such a point they do not inspire the driver.

There of course are exceptions but overall it does not seem like things will get better.
Worst case scenario
>If you are an average person, your only option is carsharing or taxis
>If the government deems that you "need" a car for your "business", you get to lease a van/truck/tractor
>If you are rich, you can get a permit that lets you drive a 500k+ electric restomod 1000 miles a year
>>
>>29032252
this is it really, isn't it? The only two cars you can buy new from a dealership that interest me these days are the MX-5 and BRZ/86. One of those is a revised platform from now over a decade ago, and the other is a Miata. Attempts to create similarly-styled coupes by other manufacturers have thus far presented as disappointments, and now Honda's (temporarily?) killing off the Civic that's supposed to compete with them.

We need more makers following the Hyundia N model of delivering affordable fun performance vehicles but instead we get bloated "utility" vehicles encumbered by regulations and endorsed by retards who can barely function without SSRIs and weed and alcohol let alone drive by the rules of the road
>>
>>29032027
People are too broke to buy cars that aren't as cheap and economical as possible. Just look at the average age of a new car buyer: 49 years old. Under 34s are less than 10% of new buyers and people 55-75 are like 60% of buyers. Everything is a grandma car because grandmas are the only people with enough money to sell to. Everyone else is too stressed financially.

Same reason the Japanese made a bunch of sick cars and bikes in the 80s and 90s before shifting hard towards simple econoboxes. "making cars fun again" is something that is totally outside the power of car companies and buyers. It would require major economic and social changes that just aren't going to happen.

The Elantra N isn't a bad car but it's low on the list of fun new car options. Most people would rather have an WRX, GR86, Miata, Civic SI, GR yaris/corolla or a better used car.
>>
>>29032354
Honestly the worst kind of enthusiast. The industry could never survive catering to someone who won't buy anything that isn't a Miata. Why would anyone else ever try to make anything like a Miata when you'll just say "if I wanted something like a Miata I'd just get a Miata". Then they make something not at all like a Miata, and it's "I'm not buying that because it's not like a Miata".
>>
>>29032969
>Why would anyone else ever try to make anything like a Miata when you'll just say "if I wanted something like a Miata I'd just get a Miata"
They dont try because its 1000000000x more profitable to make a crossover or suv. If more than a fraction of the market would actually go out and buy a new lightweight sports car (that doesn't cost more than 100k), there would be slightly more competition. Im pretty sure they still make cars like the miata and gr86 purely because someone at their respective companies still gives a fuck about making a fun car, regardless of the mediocre at best sales numbers.
>>
The cars are too annoying to fix for the average consumer. Even replacing headlight bulbs requires pulling the front bumper off for some reason. The roads are designed by morons, set to unreasonably low speeds on highways and too high in the city center streets, everyone is a psychotic maniac on the road, insurance will rape you, maintenance will rape you, OEMs are stingy with parts, RockAuto is a russian roulette, the parts stores will rape you, the cops will rape you, cylinder deactivation is a fuck, used cars are way too fuckin expensive, new cars are overpriced hot garbage, Chargers and Challengers weigh too much, Holden and Ford Australia are dead, Toyota are dropping the ball in quality, emissions requirements are sabotaging cars, EVs are rubbish, hybrids will rape you down the line, gas is adulterated, the salt belt will destroy your car unless you seal the underbody up, too many uninsured motorists and your insurance will do fuckall even with coverage for them, mechanics charge way too much for basic stuff like brakes, rotors, calipers, bearings, even damn oil changes. It sucks. It fucking sucks.
>>
>>29033029
And people turn their noses at them for being "too slow" as if 0-60 times under 6 seconds wasn't impressive until very very recently. At this point they might as well start putting V6s or boxer 6s in them for the TikTok kids who have the money to get them.

>>29033077
Well the world was a much better place 10+ years ago. Also safety and comfort are why new cars have to weigh at least 3000 pounds. The lightweight rwd purpose built sports car is an outdated concept that continues to exist off the goodwill of 2 companies due to legacy and a mild amount of success in the past.

>>29033039

id also probably try for a c8 z06, tho im not a fan of the interior or the targa top thing

gone are the days when you could get a v10 m5, or a v8 supercharged e-class, or a v12 biturbo s class coupe
gone are the days of based ferraris with good looks and NA flat plane crank v8s and v12s

oh, and, elephant in the room: PRICES

>Old cars break down all the time…

the best part is when people argue against this like they can somehow stop entropy, heatcycles, or UVs

gaskets leak, you'll deal with rust unless you live in half of the country that doesn't salt their roads, bearings wear out, and you're fighting against the previous owner's neglect (10+ year old brake/clutch fluid that's half water and making calipers stick, original trans oil that wore your synchros). after a certain point you're spending every other weekend wrenching which is fucking gay and lame because you could spend that time doing literally anything else more productive (exercise/gym, relationship, working more hours, even fucking driving the car).

cars break just from leaving them outside and not driving them

that's why i tell people eventually you'll have to drive a car made in 2020+; its not a matter of if but when. it might be this year, it might be 5 years, it might be 20 years from now.

all that applies to wrenchlets
if you're not a wrenchlet, you realize all that stuff, and when you buy an old car that has obviously not been maintained to perfection, you do a restoration
not necessarily a full on, frame off, every nut and bolt job, although not necessarily not that either, if the car merits it

more like what m539 does, where he will methodically go through every mechanical component and sort them all out.
engine, engine accessories, suspension, brakes and brake hoses/lines, wheel bearings, clutch and gearbox, diffs. everything. and then any interior shit that might also need attention too.
everything that's broken or worn out gets replaced or fixed. everything that's not documented to have been replaced recently, or is obviously new enough to not be a concern, gets replaced too.

and yes, its expensive. probably more than the car itself, unless you bought an especially well kept example.
but its less expensive than treating a 20 or 30 year old car like a 5 year old one. you can't just fix 1 thing at a time as they fail, because, as you pointed out, its all going to fail.
you need to do a comprehensive reset of the mechanical odometer, so to speak.
then, it'll be reliable. or at least as reliable as it ever was.
