>As Toyota prepared to enter the fourth generation Supra in the inaugural Japanese Grand Touring Championship (known today as Super GT) in 1994, its in-house performance arm Toyota Racing Development (TRD) crafted an equally captivating road-going counterpart of the upcoming Supra GT500 entry. Called the TRD 3000GT, this extensively re-worked performance car, although resembling the Supra in silhouette, powertrain, and original chassis number, was emphatically its own unique entity. Unveiled at the 1994 Tokyo Auto Salon, the mecca of Japanese Domestic Market builds, the TRD 3000GT blurred the line between homologation special and factory-built tuner masterpiece.

>The 3000GT was clad in the same widened bodywork as the works 1994 SARD Supra JGTC GT1 car, and featured distinctive front and rear fender extensions that broadened the car by 60 mm at the front and 50 mm at the rear to accommodate wider wheels. A wider front fascia housed a larger intercooler, combined with a unique quad-vented hood that improved engine cooling for the car's venerable 3.0-liter 2JZ-GTE. New side skirts redirected airflow better into the side ducts and to a new rear spoiler. While each of these components was available individually through TRD's extensive catalog, Toyota assembled just 35 complete factory TRD 3000GTs, each distinguished by its own TRD 3000GT identification plate. The majority of these unicorns remained in their home country, with only a few exported internationally, making the TRD 3000GT among the rarest and most desirable factory interpretations of the A80 Supra ever produced.

The 1935 Duesenberg Model JN Convertible Coupe by Rollston and Bohman & Schwartz

Estimate: $5,750,000 - $8,000,000 USD

>Built for legendary actor Clark Gable, “The King of Hollywood”
>Best of Show at the Amelia Island and Meadowbrook Concours d’Elegance
>The creator, in the instance of this Duesenberg, was Clark Gable, “The King of Hollywood,” the most famous and successful actor of his era—and the man he was creating for was himself. It was Gable who ordered one of the four Rollston-bodied convertible coupes built in the so-called JN series, the last two-seater open cars delivered by Duesenberg to customers. While in typical Duesenberg fashion, no two of the cars were alike, they all shared J. Herbert Newport’s basic graceful design, with subtly skirted fenders flowing around 17-inch wheels, a low and raked windshield, and a disappearing convertible top, and were mounted low over their chassis, eliminating the battery and tool boxes found on earlier Model Js.

>The JN was shipped directly from Rollston’s New York City premises to Bohman & Schwartz, the Pasadena, California, coachbuilder favored by denizens of the movie colony. Gable worked with their staff designer W. Everett Miller, literally sketching up the lines of what he wanted done to his new automobile at Miller’s shoulder and passing them over to the professional. These sketches, copies of which remain in the file, were faithfully translated by Miller, first to paper and then to a clay model, and show that not only did this hands-on client know what he wanted, but that what he knew and wanted was beautiful.

>Working from Gable and Miller’s collaboration, Bohman & Schwartz extended the car’s hoodline over the cowl in the fashion of Dietrich Individual Custom Packards, and in the cowl installed ventilators to draw fresh air into the cabin, a touch appropriated from early biplanes. The windshield itself was aggressively further angled by a few degrees, necessitating the design of a new top lowered to suit it, in a color chosen for its transitional hue so that it seems to blend into the remainder of the body. Similarly, the radiator shell was painted in the body color, to further provide the illusion of length. Fender skirts were installed in the rear, as were dual rear-mounted spares and wheel covers, all of body color.

Hnnng, what presence. Still looks fucking great. Will be interesting to see if this hits estimate as so much of the traditional classic market cools down (I.e. E-Types, DB5s and 300SLs losing value these last 3 yrs).

The 1914 Rolls-Royce 40/50 HP Silver Ghost Colonial London-to-Edinburgh Skiff by Schapiro-Schebera

>The story of this Rolls-Royce is more appropriately the story of its coachbuilder. Jacob Schapiro had his start as the first man in Berlin to run a fleet of taxi cabs, which he built himself; he invested this fortune into the likes of BMW and NSU when they were still fledgling companies, and shortly the fortune multiplied. In sum, in the heady years before World War II, Mr. Schapiro was one of the wealthiest men in Germany, controlling some 40 percent of the country’s automobile market.
>One of his lesser investments, in scale but certainly not in quality, was the 1919 acquisition of a small coachbuilding house by the name of Schebera, which was rechristened Schapiro-Schebera anon. Whether Schapiro-Schebera was intended as another wing of the Schapiro empire, or was simply a novelty for a man who clearly loved automobiles, is not known. What is known is that the tiny firm was capable of some truly exceptional work, witnessed most readily in their finest surviving creation, this Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost.

Estimate: $1,500,000 - $2,000,000 USD

>Chassis number 54PB, the car was ordered in 1914 and equipped to the sought-after London-to-Edinburgh specification, with, among other modifications, high-compression pistons, as recorded in the research of historian Derek Du Toit and as noted by “LE-type” on its build record; it was also specified with Colonial equipment to suit more rugged driving conditions, including increased ground clearance with raised driveline and larger wheels, 22-inch radiator, larger-capacity fuel tanks, louvered bonnets, and a four-speed transmission—an unusual combination of both packages, as it were.

>Originally shipped to Rolls-Royce France, the Silver Ghost was soon transferred to the Garage Majestic of Brussels. The chassis’ actual delivery was likely then delayed by the outbreak of World War I; as such, the intended enclosed formal coachwork may have never been created. Thus it appears that, due to the war, the car was not actually bodied and completed until 1919, when it became a very early product of the Schapiro-Schebera atelier for a Belgian client, one A. Lanser.

>The body is a two-passenger version of the design known in-period as a skiff, first developed and popularized in the early Teens by the French coachbuilder Labourdette. Traditional skiff bodies were made of planked wood, fashioned together over an inner framework with shipbuilders’ glue and brass rivets, then sanded and varnished in the manner of a classic wooden boat, hence the name.
