Toyotas are reliable sure, but the gap between Toyota and the other automakers is nowhere near as big as the internet would have you believe.

normgroids love paying a $10k premium to save $2k in maintenance costs across the life of a vehicle relative to competing brands. it's the same reason they trade in their "old car" that needs "so many repairs" for a new car with a payment. in their mind, a $600/month payment for 60 months is cheaper than spending $5k on repairs over that same period of time.
>>
I have a knocking toyota celica with the 7a-fe in my shop right now.
Sure is reliable when a 40 year old beat to shit germoid shitbox spec E34 outlasts it.
>>
>>29038851
repairs don't just happen magically the second things break and you swipe your credit card in the dash vent. imagine getting stranded with your wife and kids 200 miles from home on a sunday because your fuel pump shit the bed.
>>
>>29038903
can you imagine the inconvenience of your car breaking down to the point of immobilization once every year or two? i'd rather pay an extra $600/month for peace of mind.
>>
>>29038910
yeah it's a no brainer for most people with a job and responsibilities.
>>
>>29038910
have you ever been stuck 3-4 hours from home

it unironically blows dick and the tow alone starts at $1500 anywhere in the country if you choose to get it towed home

otherwise you're at the mercy of the local mechanic not being a scumbag and the repair not costing more than the car
>>
>>29038903
>>29038914
Imagine not having the skills or tools required to change out a fuel pump on the side of the road...
>>
>>29038949
great its the fuel pump and you're broken down 3 hours away on a saturday

>you have to drop the tank on the side of the road and you have a full 20 gallons

or

>you cant get a fuel pump at autozone/advance and its OOS with 2-3 day wait from the distributor

or

>its actually the fuel pressure regulator and the dealer can get it for you after a 2 day business day wait

or

>your diag is completely wrong and you changed a fuel pump for no reason when it was your cam/crank sensors, get raped retard
>>
>>29038811
The truth is, there was never a gap. There was always some concurrent model from another manufacturer that was better than the Toyota.
>>
>>29038955
>>29038955
Only idiots pay for 'peace of mind'. It's just paying someone else for you to think something different,
Second, if your misdiagnosing a fuel pump for a crank sensor, you'r already a wrenchlet.
Also, if you have to drop the tank instead of access the pump from a hatch on the top, you have a POS vehicle or a truck

Couldn't be me

>>29038949
you are so stupid it's insane.
>>
>>29038962
so which hotel did you pick? marriott, comfort inn, or days inn? no one has your fuel pump locally and you still didn't rule out the fpr or cam sensors (a weak pump can act like a bad cam sensor)
>>
>>29038968
No. weak pump puts put low pressure and cause all ki nd of fuel trim issues, a failed CMP will not even fire the plugs.
>>
>>29038970
a cmp can half-fail and give an intermittent start. you packed a fuel pressure tester? how do you know your pump is good? you're on the side of the road remember. you still have to walk to town or pay a cab to get you around.

and how do you know its not the fpr? fpr can act like a bad fuel pump. is your local autozone going to stock a fpr?

It depends on the specific toyota/lexus model, the year, how it's been looked after. Some of the diesel models especially are not that reliable.

And even saying that, Id replace the word 'reliable' with 'tolerant to neglect'. A toyota's engine will just be more tolerant to someone not servicing it or running it ragged because theyre overbuilt as fuck for how much hp they produce. Their QC is also top notch. Also i find that they do still have shit break on them like other cars, its just that its usually suspension components, gear box issues rather than engine issues or electrical components randomly breaking or OEM components like fuel pumps dying. Their issues tend to be cheaper to fix than issues on other cars.

Also im not even sure with the newer hybrid models if this actually still applies. Id wager that new EV vehicles are more reliable than toyotas now due to how simplistic the motor design on them is and how little there is to break. So im not sure you could call toyota the king of reliablity at this point.

you're diagnosing this while your kids have to be at school in the morning 2 states away. your wife is staring at you browsing rockauto on your phone wondering if she needs to call her parents to come pick her and the kids up. if she does, the locks will be changed on the front door when you finally get back. but hey you saved $600 a month. don't worry, this was all a fever dream anyway, you're an autistic little incel with shit for brains and will never marry or have kids so none of this will ever be a concern for you.
>>
>>29038979
...and that's why i buy a $7200/year hedge against this rare sort of event happening. god forbid anyone misses a day of work or school.
>>
>>29038955
>>your diag is completely wrong and you changed a fuel pump for no reason when it was your cam/crank sensors, get raped retard
you should be able to hear the pump prime on keyon engine off, wrenchlet.
>>
>>29038949
I keep a spare second car in my car so that if any part of my car breaks I have a replacement part on hand.

Sadly I did this mistake too. New cars are so expensive man. Like the songs say, stick to the wife that is average.
>>
>>29039024
again, how can you tell the pump has adequate pressure and its not a blockage or a blown out o-ring or a bad checkvalve?

and this is assuming you have a fuel pump in stock
>>
Honda is more reliable
>>
>>29038955
>dumbfuck is too stupid to put that 40 grand or more in the bank you save to get a hotel room
>>
>>29039174
It's called a fuel pressure tester you dumbfuck. Just drop the thing off at the mechanic and walk around town all day if you're this stupid. It'll always be cheaper.
>>
>not just renting a vehicle for a road trip
>>
>>29038955
>not just cutting a hole in the floor
>driving something that doesn't have readily available parts
>not having a OBD2 code reader
These all sound like bad life decisions/skill issues.
>>
>>29038955
You sound like the kind of scared little bitch that rents a car every time they go on a road trip. Some people truly born to be low-IQ debt slaves.
>>
>>29038851
Toyotas are cheap in the first world
>>
>>29038859
>A 30 year old car is having an issue so it sucks
Absolutely retarded post
>>
>>29038914
I've always driven old cars and have literally never had one break down.
>>
This thread is hilarious. It's so easy to tell who has a family and who's an incel.
>>
>>29039455
>packs a fuel pressure tester every road trip

>>29039664
>packs a grinder or a drill with snips every road trip

>>29039801
>has never broken down

>>29039807
>survivorship bias
>>
>>29039805
And we're not talkin price either
>>
>>29040195
That's not what survivorship bias is you retard.
>>
>>29038979
>wifey just stares at you
>one bad decision away from her changing the locks and leaving with the kids
Way to out yourself as an incel AND a wrenchlet. COULDN'T BE ME.
>>
>>29040380
ah so it's a bad decision to cart your family around in a shitbox?
>>
>>29040565
It builds character for the kids. These kind of things need to happen for life-long memories.
>>
>>29038811
that frog is racist
>>
>>29039174
Are you really asking this question? You pop the fuel line off and see if fuel comes out.
Holy fuck this board is full of wrenchlets its none of you know the basic diagnostics steps of
>check fuel
>check spark
>check air
>check timing
>>
My biggest gripe is when the water pump goes. You come to a grinding halt, and it can't be fixed by yourself on the side of the road.
