What killed the glorious land yacht?
>>
Modernity and euros.
Ironically the euros also made some pretty hefty land yachts for some time despite their governments actively trying to kill them.

>What killed the glorious land yacht?
The artificial oil embargo - because of Isral of course.
>>

Partially the oil crisis, but also partially trends in automotive design starting in the latter part of the 1980s going on.

The Japs are also pretty responsible for it to, since all of their cars were small when compared to American full sizes and were lighter, more fuel efficient, and were touted as reliable. I ultimately question this because Renault was also touted as reliable when they returned to the US market in the 1980s.
>>
>>29040122
Would that be because America likes bombing the places everyone gets oil from.
I see an issue with that.
>>
>>29040127
"reliable" is a buzzword like "trust the science".
the truth is that it's more of a ratio of cost to repair vs is it worth the trouble to fix.
notice how many classics are on the road vs stuff like 80s datsuns and corollas.
theyre gone cause nobody liked them cept autists.

Japanese (and Korean) cars tend to honestly be quite miserable as far as economy cars are concerned, at least when compared to their counterparts from America, Australia and Europe.

I will put it to you this way, in the 1990s, there was a lot of choice in A segments in Europe, but really the only ones people talk about from that time now are the Twingo and the Panda. Nobody wants or talks about Suzuki Wagons, Subaru Vivios or Daihatsu Cuores.

Likewise in America with a lot of their cars, most people would choose a 1986 Monte Carlo over a 1986 Acura Legend.

dumb boomers buying gook shitboxes to niggers is what killed them

disagree, there were 5x the amount of monte carlos sold vs legends and a big chunk of monte carlo owners are hotrodders (cant hot rod a fwd). the legend was almost 2x the price brand new ($20k vs $10-15k)
>>
>>29040146
>can't hot rod a FWD
IDK, some 90s Civic owners would disagree. But you make a fair point on pricing and sales.

CAFE regulations that forced the Continentals and Fleetwoods of the world to become Navigators and Escalades. Boost the popularity of SUVs (as they started to in the '90s and '00s) and most don't even notice that they're gone until it's too late. Even the Panther body cars that stuck around longest have been out of production for 15 years at this point.
It's gone far past killing the land yacht at this point too, sedans in general are very far and few in between at this point since everyone now believes a midsize crossover is the "average" car one should be driving.
>>
>>29040115
SUVs and trucks became the new meta oversized pieces of shit for mutts to chase clout in.

I would destroy every single one of them.

what’s even the point of having a coupe that long? so much trunk space that could be passenger legroom space.
I think suvs were right to usurp land yachts role.

Oil crisis, smog controls, oil crisis again, realizing that there's not much point to having a neutered 7 liter V8 that makes dogshit power with dogshit MPG and a compression ratio of "lmao", and then euro imports took over the luxury market.

At it's core, what sold these cars was a variation of the ostentatious display of wealth theme in that having an impractical car meant that you were comfortable and didn't need to worry about every last bit of efficiency rather than an outright "I'm richer than you!" statement. This was definitely on the way out by the mid-70's and people of the time were seriously complaining about the broughamization of cars. The pendulum swing the other direction started with Mercedes and continued in the perception of Japanese efficiency and assembly Basically what changed was the idea of what constituted a display of wealth, and all those busted Cadillacs and Lincolns with peeling vinyl tops littering the ghettos and trailer parks of the nation helped with this, changed dramatically. Since then we seem to have settled on a full size pickup in an upper trims to be the display of financial comfortability that says to our neighbors that they don't have to worry about us, we're fine (ie we're not about to sell out to niggers so you won't have to move soon).

The standard of reliability was different back then. Odometers didn't go higher than five digits. The six digit odometer reliability is a relatively modern development in automotive engineering, roughly in the 1990s.

I think they're perfectly fine. Just get one with a big, stupid lump of a powertrain and an oversized A/C compressor, and everything else can be fixed with the aftermarket. This combination makes for longevity and endurance that is actually pleasant to live with, and no one will pay attention to you.

Right now, I like MPI engines and older-style transaxles for these cars. They are in the right age range where they're considered disposable trash, around the 10-20 year old mark. I don't know what the newer cars are like, but I know I don't want a software-defined car in my fleet for a very long time, so I should secure a two-car fleet at minimum to insulate against this change.

>what’s even the point of having a coupe that long?
Sedans used to be judged by a "mafia-sized trunk" as a joke. Crown Vics and Town Cars were famous for being able to fit ten drunken college students in the car and a few people in the trunk. That was back when you could get one for $200 at a police auction so you could have a seriously cheap beater that people treated with absolutely zero mercy.

>Since then we seem to have settled on a full size pickup in an upper trims to be the display of financial comfortability
I dunno, the wealthy got burned hard on early mortality rates with turbo Toyota V6 and GM and Ford engine and transaxle asplode before 10k miles. The wealthy retreated back to old Toyota V8s or restomods.

The rich drivers around here don't have new trucks. They've retreated to V8 Land Cruisers, Tundras, and Sequoias. I think they got sick of waiting months on a dead truck in a dealer service bay. They're rich and the idea of being forced to wait when they literally have enough money to overnight anything they want in the world pisses them off.
>>
>>29040115
as much as it hurts to admit it, these cars belonged to a better economic time. when you could afford to have a sedan for most driving and then perhaps an older truck for sometimes towing things.
now, we're returning to pre-WWII car design. people can only afford one car, so it needs to do everything. it needs to haul, it needs to hold the entire family, it needs 4WD to get to work in the winter because your boss won't give a shit if there's 3 feet of snow outside...

>I have a KIA Amanti. Pretty good road boat.
Ah yes, the knockoff E-Class. Honestly, there's really nothing wrong with the car itself, it's just not a standout winner in any way. But it will always get you where you need to be, which is something people can no longer take for granted, given the early failure rates for many newer cars these days.

CAFE fuel economy regulations. Cars have different MPG standards than trucks and SUVs so building a huge sedan with a V8 is almost impossible now.

I know I can get one.
