The EA825 and to a lesser extent the EA824 V8s are excellent, and the first V8s audi made since the 40v 077 V8 engines that are actually really good. All of their chain-timed V8s before the EA824 were/are junky. Don’t do it anon, please listen, please!

Literally the only negative mark I can find against the rs5 is the maintenance side of things. It passes every other test i could put it through.

Lag is terrible and the power is extremely non-linear. It's very "boy racer" and discombobulated.
Also, are you regularly hauling around 5 people? For an enthusiast, smaller = better.
>>
>>29042988

This is incredibly common. Just because it has a seat doesnt mean you're fitting that many adults in it.

The problem is that those chains are on the firewall side so you have to separate the engine from the transmission and drop it out of the car.
I've driven a 6-speed S4 with that engine for 2-3k miles. They sound excellent, but Audis feel heavy (as you'd expect). A lot of low-end so it actually feels as powerful as it is even when driving normallly. Accelerates like an STi with an accessport tune, fast but not extreme.
It's a very solid highway cruiser.
And the S/RS models have the real mechanical Quattro AWD system, the one pictured has a 60% rear split. So unlike most Audis it can probably handle somewhat decently near or past the traction limit.
Did I mention that the 4.2L sounds great? I did!
>>
These are of nice quality, especially the buttons and stuff. Very easy to drive. Driving in the wet will feel like driving on dry roads. That’s great if you want a car that goes fast in all scenarios, but it won’t be very overly exhilarating
>>
>>29043015
What I like about the rs5 is that yes, while it is a complicated car, its a vag product meaning it's got the documentation and aftermarket support that comes with being part of a manufacturer group that makes millions of cars.
Is the 4.2 timing chain a pain in the ass? Yes. Has it also been done and documented a million times? Also yes.
>>29043016
>especially the buttons and stuff.
I really value that kind of tactility which is another + for the rs5 for me. I dont want the things i touch to feel like cheap garbage.
>>29043017
Im not interested in those.
>>

>>
>>29043023
Those are almost two decades older than the b8.5. Its not exactly a direct comparison, let alone fair. The rs5 4.2 is not the same engine as what you're you're thinking about
>>29043026
Does it rev to 8250 tho?
>>
>>29042852
Timing chains SUCK, you're not doing them yourself unless you've got access to a full-featured specialist shop. Audi loves to cram engines into their cars with zero room to spare.
Brakes are eye-wateringly expensive, and you'll go through them quick because it's a heavy fucker. Suspension needs frequent rebuilds, and it's 4 links on each front corner alone and they all have integrated balljoints, so you're replacing the whole part each time.
Carbon gets stuck to the intake valves and doesn't get washed off because it's got no secondary port injection system. They all leak from every gasket, because that's just what Audis do, but because it's an RS, replacing any of them probably involves dropping the engine.
Dry clutch VW DSGs have problems, and this just has a longitudinal version of that.
Steering is electrically assisted and numb.

And it's the type of car that has a wealthy first owner, who trades it in after the warranty or lease is up, and then it's bought by someone who can't deal with the maintenance bills but still wants the "RS driving experience" so they all get mistreated and probably have severe underlying issues. All of them are beat to shit, except maybe the ones well outside your price range.

Incredible noise though.
>>
>>29043032
>>this 4.2 v8 by audi is totally different from this 4.2 v8 by audi
It literally is though. You should look into the differences.
>>
>>29043026
>Does it rev to 8250 tho?
No, the one I drove of that gen had a 6,800 rpm fuel cut (4.2 V8 40v). I assume that RS5 has the (better) 4.2 V8 FSI 32v version.
I don't even like Audis, that 40v sounded great though the 32v probably does too.

>+ you want more room, right?
I never said that
Idk why you're suggesting cars 20 years older than what im looking at. If thats what I wanted id be looking at those instead.
>>29043034
Im aware of all of these problems, but like I said above, the cost and maintenance is literally the only downsides I can see based on my research, and all of these problems and their repairs are documented. I get its a high end car needing high end maintenance, but nobody who buys one is disappointed in the car on its own merits. You wouldnt believe the list of cars I have considered already and dismissed.
If its my destiny to get butt raped by rs5 costs than so be it. Ill pick up my cam locks and download vdcs.
>>29043042
>I assume that RS5 has the (better) 4.2 V8 FSI 32v version.
The ITBs and 8250 redline are probably the most notable differences. The sound tickles my balls. It reminds me of small block american v8s down low, except it revs like a honda.
>>
>>29043064
Im not using it 98% of the time anyway. This is going to be a weekend car seeing maybe 2,000-4,000 a year. The flappy paddles dsg is unironically a draw in this case because its more engaging than an old slushbox but can also be more leisurely than the manuals I drive every day.

It's not about being a wrenchlet, it's about being a timelet. If you have time to work on a rolling nightmare like a modern audi, you're wasting that precious time. It's not enjoyable to work on a car like that, time is the only resource you have that you can't get back. If I was going to own something like that I'd pay someone to work on it. I only own things that are somewhat enjoyable to work on.

>you're wasting that precious time. It's not enjoyable to work on a car like that, time is the only resource you have that you can't get back
Id rebut this by saying time shared wrenching with your own offspring turns it from something wasteful into something priceless
But I get where you're coming from which is why my daily drivers adhere to the princle you laid out, simple and easy to work on. Their only function is utility, so i like it when they cost me minimal time.

Tangent, but I had a shitbox fall into my lap recently and it was actually refreshing to have a car that needed some work. I enjoy the process of maintaining machines.
Ive seen someone compare wrenching to being a 40k tech priest, caring for machines we try to understand as best as we can, but we as the maintainers could never create copies of them. I really vibed with that.

The engine is amazing, when it works.
The suspension makes it handle way better than it has any right to with the engine sitting out in front of the front axle, when it works.
The transmission shifts lightning fast, when it works.

If you get a good one, one that works most of the time, you'll probably love it.
If you get a bad one, it'll throw problem after problem after infuriating problem at you until it breaks you or you permanently break it.

At least there's no turbos to make your life hell, like on the V10 RS6.

I find most bmws to be really boring to look at and be inside of after the e39. The base e92 is an attractive car on the outside but the m3 doesnt look good enough to justify itself to me. I think the f82 looks phenomenal tho.
For me the b8.5 rs5 is one of very few cars ive seen that needs absolutely no visual alterations to look perfect.
>>29043140
I actually owned one of these so I can comment on this with direct experience. This was the car that sold me on german build quality. The problem is while the car looks incredible and rides like nothing else ive been in, its just really boring to drive. Yes, I understand that is the point, but the looks on the outside sell an idea of a sleeker mercedes, something nimble or sporty, when in reality its an s class roadster and drives like one.
I like the rs5 because its a similar formula, however with an engine that has real character instead of one thats not supposed to be noticed.
I think everything about the rs5, the cockpit, the engine, the looks, the ride, the sound, are all operating in perfect unison. I know its a corporate vag product, but it doesnt feel like one.
Literally the -only- downside I can contemplate is its really expensive and complicated but really good driving experiences often are.

Ive never found moderm cadillacs nice to look at personally. I think they had a lot of home runs up through the 70s and a cool refresh period in the 90s. After that, even in modern ones, I just dont like how they look inside or out. Thats my issue with most modern american cars.
>>29043165
Well the thing is you're right. The e92 m3 is a direct competitor with the rs5 and they are near identical on paper.
Im even willing to concede the m3 is an objectively better car, full stop. It still doesnt tickle my eye balls the way the rs5 does, and frankly im ok if it doesnt tickle yours.
>>29043166
They are really nice looking some of them, but their modern design language doesnt really appeal to me beyond the sacco era. Mercedes also lacks the same level of diy support; Thats one advantage the rs5 has being a vag product based on a chassis with millions of units made.

I appreciate the input anon.
Im really infatuated by big coupes and luxury offerings; the personal luxury coupe era of the 80s and part of the 90s. For example the Lexus LC500 and '72 coupe deville may be 5 decades apart, but they belong to a similar family. The v8 vantage is the same genre as the rs5 but in the guise of a low volume hand made british sports car. They all have a few things in common. They're all
(typically) big, gorgeous cars made with premium materials, tactile touchpoints, visually representing the peak of their era of design, and with characteristic engines that disappeared when those eras ended.
Ive studied just about everything you could conceive of as an enthusiast car under $40,000 and my infatuation for this thing is would-rape tier.

Ive owned several rwd cars and love burnouts, but I have too much mechanical sympathy for my cars. In my life Ive chirped the tires on a corner once intentionally, and did a soft clutch dump one time to do a little skid. The limits of an rs5 awd system or its near-limit dynamics are ever going to present as a problem for me. Unless im tossing a low power fwd shitbox around, im having fun well below the limit.

The engine is used in the R8 mkII and it’s basically got no plastic parts.
Op the timing chain in these isn’t like the previous gen. The issues are usually pretty easy to fix as they moved a lot of stuff to be accessible. The suspension will prob need refreshed. It handles great. Weighs barely more than the new M2 lel.

He’s not wrong btw. The DCT is better than the one he’s knowledgeable of though. Can have some problems. Also has Reinforced cooling for track duty.
I wouldn’t buy the 034 suspension as it has poly bushings which are a little too GT3 for a car you want the ride on the road in. The ca always has double bones and a firm set up. It also handles neutral or with oversteer on track so it’s overkill unless you really just want a track car.

Op here, good morning anons. I learned something interesting id like to share.
So on the 4.2, most people assume audi went with the rear mounted chain because Germans are obsessed with needless complication and self flaggelation. That may be true, but I dont think its true in this case.
Ive learned old versions of the 4.2 v8 used to bave timing belt that was mounted on the front. Why on earth would anyone decide to cancer up this simple proven system and make it so complicated?
Well as ive learned, it was a marketing decision. Not the chains, but the decision to create the a4 rs4. Having been developed for their big body cars, the 4.2 physically could not fit inside of the A4 platform but the engineers had to make it work anyway because the boss said so. This lead to them relocating the chains to the rear. This saved about an inch of front clearance but also moved the chains to a more reinforced part of the block, meaning the entire block could be more compact. It doesnt make the job easier, but I like knowing the engineers were trying to solve a real problem that got dumped into their laps instead of just making things needlessly complex.
Ford also uses 4 chains in their voodoo; they just drive two cams with two crank driven chains, and then the offset cam gets driven by a chain from the driven cam.The voodoo timing is still a lot simpler by comparison because ford didnt need to rely on their chain drive to run accessories from the back of the engine.

Its not going to be a daily so thats ok

I think the v8 rs5 is about 4.5 to 60. Its objectively the worst performer of the bunch but if I wanted numbers id be buying a c5

Noted, ive been taking a look at common maintenance parts to see what im in for.
Yeah some parts are expensive but they're also really shiny and really nice looking and that tickles my balls.
I like that I can buy a car that just has all this fancy shit from the factory instead of trying to hack together a nice car out of a total shitbox and some shiny parts. Another thing that really appeals to me is outside of maybe a resonator delete, this car needs no modifications to cater to me.

I was enjoying memes for years before I ever heard the word spoken aloud by another person.

Skip the wave rotors. They’re not mirrored and so poorly cool on one side. Order girodisc which is lighter and costs less.
The brakes are straight off the R8.
You won’t find 8 piston brakes on any car sold below $150k these days.
They’re the best I’ve used and I noticed the lack of stopping power quickly after I sold my RS5.

It’s literally a perfect car except the expensive maintenance items which are frankly rare. I did most work myself and I’m not skilled. For the cost it’s a steal.
It’s a GT3 r8 hurrican engine with frw changes aside from two less cylinders.
You won’t find an NA high revving double wishbone suspension all aluminum or lighter with 8 piston brakes and a DCT ever again for less than $200k. Corvette being The exception.
>>
I can deal with the chains and I have dealt with the chains, which means I've learned that I don't want to have to deal with the chains.
It's a shit job made all the more aggravating by how fragile and fickle the chains are. I've seen a well maintained S4 snap a chain at 30k miles.

>It’s literally a perfect car except the expensive maintenance items which are frankly rare
This is my assessment. Its literally the only flaw I can find in the car outside of wanting it to be a little louder, which can be solved with a midpipe
>You won’t find an NA high revving double wishbone suspension all aluminum or lighter with 8 piston brakes and a DCT ever again for less than $200k. Corvette being The exception.
Very true. These seem to have bottomed out in value too so its the best time to get one. What made you sell yours? Pls blog about it

these are like 10-15k in the UK. Lmao

Advantage of cars being made and sold in higher volumes in your back yard, vs the other side of the world
If we look at mustangs its a similar story but in reverse
>>
>>29043487
he was saying that launch control isn't the 'real' 0-60 times. You're not launching it every time. My golf r does it in 3.4 seconds but a golf r isn't as fast as those cars in the real world
>>
>>29043608
I just looked and a V8 mustang from ~2018 is about 25-30k
>>
>>29043601
That just means they hold value better in the us
>>
>>29043587
FSIs are less of a cunt about it than chain 40Vs at least, the metal guides don't have a 10% chance of breaking every single cold start.
>>

I drove mine to 112k and then I got kids and bought a four door due to wife bitching.
I don’t even think modern nu cars are faster in practice. The computers for launch are better and there is more torque down low and they have testing done on PS4S and not old all seasons.
but they also have more weight and smaller tires and brakes.
Look for the titanium package with the 5 spoke forged wheels as it has a better exhaust sound which is amazing.
The next gen RS5 is the same basic chassis but softer and more GT oriented and the new RS5 is 600bs.
The V8 RS5 is right there with a corvette or 911. Don’t care what the poors say.

I would personally also recommend getting one that had good owners. Proper servicing and fluids and a well kept interior go along way.
>>
>>29043705
I want the fat 5s and a sport exhaust. Other options are ancillary or not really needed.
I have mixed feelings on the titanium and blackout packages, I guess it depends on the color. Thanks for the input.

the 2010s rs grill still looks like shit. And nothing audi shits out in the future will change that past
>lets give every rs the same boring basedack face as the b7
it looks so utter gaudi compared to the S models
everytime the rs5 gets posted here i asked myself, what kind of untermensch fanboys that car body
>>
>>29043777
I think it looks fine, not sure what the problem is.
Yeah, you can blame audi for the big grill trend but its not their fault everyone copied them.
>>
>>29043781
The abomination is giving every rs car the same hex pattern trapeziod from 2005 to 2016.
At least the new rs5 is something fresh for once (and these overexposed press pictures dont exactly show the irl looks)

Thats called a brand direction. Pretty common across the industry.
As far as them being ugly im not seeing it, sorry

I doubt that.. I'm pretty sure some lease spec 300$ per month a3 or whatever is their best selling car, not something that's 100k

its a phev, businesses can lease them for cheap. It costs 50€ per year in tax for a 600hp monster.
In early 2026 Audi Neckarsulm were forced to throttle production and send workers home because the A5,S5 and A6 sells like shit. Then the RS5 launched, and in july that thing had 6 month+ delivery time for fresh orders.

meanwhile the A3 sells even worse

Not him but I've got a first gen B8. Right on the cusp of the facelift.
Has the Recaro Wingbacks and the front Carbon Ceramic brakes.
Kinda silly cause it's a GT car that goes through suspension bump stops when you do the twisties too much each year.
It's a heavy car. Yes that anon who said it's sick when it works is correct.
It's mint. A great car - Do an ECS x-pipe or something similar to get the most high pitch out of the 8250 (9k with a tune)
I've put 50k kms on mine in 5 years and it's literally all consumables I've gone through and it's been DRIVEN.
It's slower than the M3 and C63 but imo it looks the best in and out.
It's a great car. Seats fold down too so it's pretty practical.
Sure there's faster shit out there including tuned S5's but if you want fast then JHM supercharge it.
Otherwise, it's plenty fast for 90% of applications.
I went through all the competition when considering one and the RS5 won out all round.
If you want a reliable 2 door v8, get a vette or an RCF.
I love mine and would only get out of it for an RCF or Maserati MC Stradale

I plan to enjoy it bone stock, with the exception of a midpipe to delete the resonator. If I feel a little cheeky ill do very very mild lowering springs and some spacers, but otherwise I think its perfect out of the box. Ill probably skip the carbon ceramics because I dont plan on driving the car that hars.
But thank you for the input anon, glad you like the car :)
