I do oddly like that top color on there. It's not perfect, it might look better on a dark grey, but it still looks good enough and is interesting.

>Aren't the transmissions bad in those?
its honestly insane to release a car with a manual trans and warranty to the public these days considering the fatherless epidemic. mazda basically sacrificed an entire generation of NDs to teach zoomers how to drive a manual transmission. keep in mind this is the only reason ND prices are a bit high when new compared to something like a brz, you dont get a lot of metal but you inadvertently pay for all the trannies they had to replace under warranty since zoomers cant shift.
>>
>>29043445
I love miatas, owned them 12+ years. But the ND1 transmission issues were Mazda's fault 100%. You can attribute it to whatever sociological or political ideas, but the reality is that people learn manual on lots of cars and this doesn't happen.
And I doubt it was true noobs dealing with this, because it seems like it happened to people who know about cars, at least a little.
To me, Mazda fucked that up hard and it's 100% their fault.
This is a 2WD car (with AWD the transmission eats excess power because it can't spin the wheels, RWD can just spin the tires) with less than 200hp. There's no excuse for that shit.
>>
>>29043445
nd prices are in line with every other miata when they were new because miatas were always expensive mazda knows its a luxury product meant for boomers with disposable income buying it as a toy/2nd car

back in the 1990s they still cost the equivalent of $30-35k when adjusted for inflation
>>
>>29043452
>Mazda fucked that up hard and it's 100% their fault.
dont forget the nd was running around laguna seca for an entire year before it was released to the public, these drivers were dogging the fuck out of the tranny but somehow, magically, and for no reason at all, these tranneis are put into normid hands and start grenading themselves with the lower output motor. the manual transmission hasnt changed fundamentally for decades, mazda must have just forgot how to build them.
>>29043453
im saying the nd would be cheaper if they diddnt make buyers subsidize zoomies first manual transmission learner car.
>>
>>29043456
>the nd was running around laguna seca for an entire year before it was released to the public, these drivers were dogging the fuck out of the tranny but somehow, magically, and for no reason at all, these tranneis are put into normid hands and start grenading themselves with the lower output motor.
So... why don't other mid-10s manual cars have those issues. And why did the issue go away when they updated it?
It was Mazda's fault. I'm one of the biggest Miataposters on this board, but I'm not going to make shit up - they fucked up then they corrected it.
>>
>>29043456
They sacrificed durability on the tranny for weight savings, they shouldn't have done that. Simple as
>>
>>29043457
>why don't other mid-10s manual cars have those issues.
if you can run 10s with a manual you can assume that they know how to shift gears.
>>29043458
lol what was the repair? also consider how it would look if they called their customers a bunch of fatherless niggers instead of saying they beefed up some bracket or something.
>>
>>29043458
It was cost, not weight savings. Stronger M/T components don't weigh much more than weak ones. We're talking in terms of grams or ounces.
>>
>>29043459
You know I meant mid-2010s you cheeky bastard you.
>>
>>29043461

yea they shoudl have made it more expensive, that way everyone grinding their gears to dust would uhh....uhhhhhhhhhhhh......something something warranty repair manual transmission learner car.
>>
>>29043462
2010s had no issues because the target buyer was boomers and that generation knew how to operate a manual transmission. The target demographic for the ND was zoomer anime kids hence the lamborghini headlights and giant fast and furious grille
>>
>>29043457
>And why did the issue go away when they updated it?
it took an entire year of production runs to teach non knowers how to drive a manual. they literally did NOTHING to fix the issue lol it was all publicity control
>>
>>29043456
>im saying the nd would be cheaper if they diddnt make buyers subsidize zoomies first manual transmission learner car.

naw just look up how much na/nbs cost new when adjusted for inflation

mazda knows its all boomers, the original NA 1.6s had waiting lists by rabid boomers paying over MSRP for one. same story with the ND. if anything the ND is the last call for boomers before they're too old to drive.

>dont forget the nd was running around laguna seca for an entire year before it was released to the public, these drivers were dogging the fuck out of the tranny but somehow,

to mazdas credit no other car company does this except maybe porsche where they actively try to make their cars stand up to motorsports use

if it was toyota or honda they would tell you to fuck off for abusing the car
>>

Do NAs or NBs drive better? Is it noticeable?
>>
>>29044822
Take this with a pinch of salt as I've only owned an NA, but I would assume the differences are almost negligible for 95% of owners. NA and NB are essentially the same car underneath, with the biggest difference being that the NB has a slightly stiffer chassis and marginally improved suspension geometry.

NB's supposedly better build quality, which may fool your brain into thinking they drive better, but unless you're an extremely experienced competition driver pushing the car to the limit, I doubt you'd ever feel any notable difference in the two from a chassis perspective - the condition of the car in question will make a far larger difference. A freshly restored NA will drive *significantly* better than an NB on dry rotted bushes and blown out shocks, and vice versa.

I have a question for fellow ND owners. Did you let the dealership talk you into getting an extended warranty?
One of the reasons I bought the car was that it's supposed to be an easier car to wrench on than most, and Mazda is one of the more reliable brands nowadays.
I know the ND trannies have a bad reputation but I turned down the warranty because I heard it was limited to ND1 trannies and any issues would become apparent within the included 36k mile warranty anyway.

But I am a little worried that I'll have problems with the electronic bullshit that I can't solve on my own one day.
I wish the sport trim still came without the modern infotainment like in 2016. Look at this beauty. Supposedly it had a CD player where the glovebox is.

>>29043090
I debtmaxxed and have no regrets so far. I had excellent credit and put down a $7k down payment.
They approved me for the 36 month/0% rate even though they weren't offering it on Miatas at the time.
Also negotiated a -$2.5k discount after making them take off the bullshit ceramic coating charge.
This was in 2024 so I just have a little over a year left until it's fully paid off.

I think they were desperate to sell it to meet their monthly quota or because the car had been sitting on the lot for months.
The car has a manufacture date in April and I purchased it in November. It's the Sport (base) trim and I think most people buying a new Miata are boomers willing to pay an extra $5k-$10k for the Club or GT trims.

Anyway, if the dealer acts like your demands are insane, just walk out and find another dealership. You just need to find one place that's willing to take a loss on a car because they're desperate to get their monthly incentive from Mazda.

It looks like there's a difference between the UK and US Haynes.
Picrel, mine calls it differential.
The "final drive" in yours is the diff.
Yours says final drive - 1.0L of gear oil.
Mine says differential - 2.1 pints of gear oil.
1 liter is 2.1 pints.
Also, the way they're designed, you fill the diff (on level ground) to where the oil is level with the bottom of the fill hole, then you have the correct amount so you technically don't need to know the amount other than making sure you bought enough.
>>
>>29044940
gonna need a citation on that. not that I dont believe you, i just think thats cool.
>>
>>29044878
It is the small things that make the biggest difference though.

The NB has the cabin reinforcement plate on the tunnel/back panel shelf area, I think only the late NAs got them. Plus VVT. Bigger brakes. A lot of the stuff transfers too.
>>
>>29045109
>It is the small things that make the biggest difference though.
I agree to a point, but I really think it depends on your use case. The plate isn't going to change the basic fundamental driving characteristics of the car during a commute or even for your average driver on "muh twisties", even if it does decrease chassis deflection by a few percent, and the same goes for bigger brakes - nothing but a good thing in reality, but unless you're doing laps at a track or are pushing hard on a fairly steep mountain pass, you're probably not going to reach the thermal threshold of even 1.6 brakes; in fact, I'd argue that proper pad material is more important than a slightly larger caliper and disc. VVT is the only thing there that I'd say makes a *noticeable* difference, even in regular driving, as it gives a not insignificant bump in power below the curve over the non-VVT cars and could potentially be felt when joining traffic and pulling off from a stop or out of corners.

All of this is not to say that the NB isn't overall better, because it objectively is better in almost every way from an engineering stand point, but if the question is "Like for like, is an NB worth choosing over the NA for those differences alone"? For the extra second or so those differences might net you on a track, no, I don't see that they are. The price, condition, and personal opinion on aesthetics hold far more weight when choosing NA or NB than the driving dynamics of the two.
>>
>>29044822
I've had both and honestly, at first I thought "it's the same car, NB is just an NA without popups"

It's somewhat true but not really, steering and suspension geometry was definitely improved, it's much more stable at highway speeds and but still playful on normal roads. My NB was much more worn out than my NA too, so it's definitely a chassis thing.

I went from NB1 to NA8 and I miss the NB at times. It just felt more grown up. I want to drive an NA6 at some point because I'm convinced the 1.8 was an afterthought.

The fuck do you want me to say, I already made my point.

Mazda nd1 trannies for some reason exploded on contact when handled by fatherless auto-only faggots.

Somehow, magically and for no reason at all after 1 year of not selling to the public and exclusively to spec Miata race teams who did the durability testing for them.

Somehow after a century of manual trannies existing.

Somehow after mating a in-house tranny to the weakest modern 2 liter the planet has ever seen.

Somehow, after manufacturing one million+ trannies, miraculously they messed something up but the only people who were bitching were fatherless zoomer trans gender wrenchlet twinks with no father.

So what did Mazda do, did they "beef" the gears up lol? They did something, I'll tell you what they didn't do, they didn't call their customers a bunch of fatherless wrenchlets, they did something. One little thing and it magically fixed everything. They overlooked this one fucking issue, but after the transgender kids noticed the problem they fixed it. What did they do?? It must have been a little bracket or something. Gram strategy isn't actually good at all! Kys btw.

I'm not that anon but this is pretty weak logic that depends on you not knowing how the world works.
I mean, if you were right then Mazda would not accept the blame because taking that many warranty claims is costly.

You also haven't really explained why ND1 Miatas specifically fell victim to fatherless wrenchlets.
I know you think it's the target audience being younger, but why didn't this happen with zoomers buying the ND2 or ND3 as their first manual transmission?
Do you think people stopped learning to drive manual since then? What about other manual cars with younger fans like the GT86/FRS/GR86/BRZ?
I'm willing to bet that GR86 owners skew much younger than ND Miatas.

mazda tech here, believe me or don't believe me but transmission failures still come in on nd2/nd3 albeit at a reduced rate because of a dual mass flywheel and some

it's just not a solid transmission to abuse like all the other NC/NB/NA boxes. mazda knew something wasn't right because it's undergone 5 revisions until they finally just left it alone because the dual mass flywheel fixes most of the shock sent to the trans

>I mean, if you were right then Mazda would not accept the blame because taking that many warranty claims is costly.
You're doubly right there, if you actually read the TSB for the transmission issues in 2016 cars, the fix is an entirely new/remanned transmission (plus a small ECU change). They change the configuration of 2nd and 3rd, so it's not a quick bracket or shim or anything like that. There's no way in hell Mazda would pay for thousands of transmissions if there wasn't a real problem.

Intake wouldn't cause rich anyway. Unless... When you did your airbox delete, you left the MAF sensor in the intake piping and unmodified, right?
Any check engine light codes?

No egr.
Intake unmodified otherwise.
Working on standalone ecu this fall, that'll probably solve it. Seeing what I can do before that
>>

I'm guessing the primary O2 sensor is dying but I don't know the history of the car and swap.
How do you know it's running rich, btw? A gauge? If so did you just install the gauge or has it been fine and only recently started going rich?

I doubt you have any idea what your afrs are since you don't have a gauge you're just going by what some boomer told you

Well well, it turns out Bosch switched to Mexico for oil filters in the last few years. Good to know, bad to hear. And it looks like quality has decreased according to some random net posters. Bummer, I'll have to look up more recent comparisons and find a new winner.
I'm a weeb but kana and kanji all over an oil filter does nothing for me.

Anon that was looking to buy a blue NA, if you recall from last thread. I've been to see 4 miatas over the past 2 weeks now. All of them have been utterly boned.
>blue NA hard top - wrecked body/suspension by 45 y/o hooner
>black NB - seller used old pictures and never said so, actual car had awful curb rash on all wheels and had been in a rear end collision
>red NA - sparkles in oil, rusted out rockers that weren't disclosed
>white NA - no papers
I don't mind fixing up a old car but holy fuck, why do people just lie on car listings now? You really think I'm not going to notice the obvious damage you never mentioned, and pay you the full asking price?

I kinda regret selling my old red 91, still keeping an eye out on the market but I'm looking at other vehicles like Corvettes too. Almost at the point of debtmaxxing a ND.
>>
do the club seats have good lumbar support?
what bout the gt?
this affects my decision on whether ill ever buy an nd :(
>>
>>29046752
Not really, the seat design is pretty much a hammock on the GT. Comfy, but no lumbar support. Surely you could just buy one of those little Velcro pillows or something right?
>>
>>29046751
NAs are way overvalued for what they are. I'd try to find a nice NC or cheaper ND, they're both great cars.
>>
>>29046886
I'm only really in to neo classic and classics for a summer car. I know NAs especially are highly over valued, which is why I'm broadening my horizons a bit. I really shouldn't have sold my old NA, shit was clean as fuck.
>>
>>29046415
Are there not a few different filter brands where you live? I'm an ausfag and I can go down to the local Supercheap Auto and pick from five different filters that they'll have on the shelf, not even talking about ordered in.
>>
>>29046444
I love OEM/Made in Japan as much as the next guy but oil filters are pretty basic engineering and I doubt that one paper filter is dramatically different from the other (except shorter length of filter paper in the budget category). Synth media is a different discussion, OEM doesn't use synthetic though right?

I dont think you understand my post. Each seller actively lied about the condition. Like for the blue hard top NA, it was lowered in the pics. Upon arrival he had installed 2 inch spacers sticking the wheels out far beyond the body that had wrecked the fenders.

the NC transmission, which is much more robust than the ND's, is 21kg heavier. Mazda never really fixed the ND transmission, they just put a bandaid on it in the form of the dual mass flywheel and called it a day, when they should have just reverted to the NC tranny. But then they would have had to deal with retards screaming that the car is pigfat. Can't win

re: ND1 tranny
Is it only the US market that had issues? I read a theory on an old thread that the US market ND1 having a 2.0L engine is the reason there were problems, because the light-weight tranny was designed to support the original 1.5L engine.

they can put it on a lift but i wouldnt put it past them telling you to fuck off for a compression test (unnecessary its a 60k mile 2013 miata)

corrosion is a bigger issue than anything engine related all that carfax tells me is whoever owned it DIY'd everything or had a private shop do it when it was in ND
>>
>>29048513
>ND1 tranny
>Is it only the US market that had issues? I
Yea but it had nothing to do with he 150hp 2.0 liter being installed, we found out the issue was a bunch of fatherless wrenchlets not knowing how to shift. This is why people overseas didn't have any issues..
>>
>>29048513
Ignore the schizo. For the most part it is only the US that had issues, exactly for that reason. The trans wasn't designed to handle much more than 150hp, which the 2.0l has by default. That also means that anybody tuning the 1.5 would have ran into the same issues, so euro market still had some problems, just not as many.

I'm reading that only some 15"s work if you have the smallest ND brakes but most 16"s work. There's width and offset it take into consideration. 4x100 isn't very common anymore, find a wheel you want and look it up to see if others have it fit without modification.
It's only an inch diameter down (I assume you have 17"s), it won't make a huge difference. You'd best be rolling in money for that to be worth your while.

Except NA/NB Miatas and their hardtops, you can hardly give them away in the UK/Europe meanwhile US prices are rising. That 4k NB2 is definitely the exception and not the rule.

I'm debating between between installing AC or just not running the hard top. My first miata was a NA6 without AC but no hard top and that was fine. On the drive home I quickly realized that no ac + hard top is a wful combo.

dont do that, replace the condenser with a condenser off a ND and just charge it back up its all it needs probably.

Nice dude, I just got an NB for the same price this January (also no A/C and antenna doesn't work).
Sounds like it's in decent shape, is in a cool color, and it's got a nice hardtop.
I notice some minor things, but hey, it's a 4k miata! Definitely take the style bar off if it's not a real welded-in race-approved bar. Depending on where the exhaust leak is you can patch it yourself for like $10.
Congrats.

I have enough credit card points to fly to UK for free.
It's $100 to fly back with freight size luggage.

Any good deals on hardtops?

Why should I have a Miata over a Cappuccino anons? (part availability isn't a concern)
>>
>>29051638
>what is this, a car for ants?
>>

Miatas are overpriced for what they are, kei cars are ludicrously overpriced for what they are (in NA at least). Also wheels on the wrong side.
>>
>>29051642
NTA but shifting with the left hand is infinitely superior to shifting with the right, I went out of my way to import just for the RHD.
>>
>>29051642
>Miatas are overpriced for what they are
What would be more fitting with value then? Bearing in mind the Cappuccinos charm is priceless
>>
>>29051638

When both cars are arguably toys, the only reason you should choose X over Y is personal preference - drive both and choose whichever makes you smile more.

While I don't agree completely , some miatas are overpriced, (nc, nd) the na is for sure overpriced and the na is getting there.

Also as someone looking for a Honda fit, those are very overpriced online. Should be cheaper than what I'm seeing
>>
>>29052048
Honda fits are overpriced? What they going for? I've been driving a 2015 one I bought new

The miata is cheap because people don't want to be seen by randos driving a car that's considered "gay" by normies.
Fits are more overpriced. It's a FWD ecobox with maccas and torsion beam rear. But people pay out the ass for them. Parts for them are more expensive, too. Same with a lot of Hondas for some reason.
Miatas are dbl-wishbone on all 4 and RWD, but I got a 100% rust-free 130k mile one for $4k flat this year. A lot of people really don't want to be seen in a miata, it keeps prices relatively low for what it is.
>>
>>29052063

They have an enthusiast following, people say they're "basically go karts", and memes for how much stuff they can carry.

I'm in it for the practically and because of its size to fitting stuff ratio. At this point I'm considering getting a crv/hrv with awd (for way cheaper) because while I'll miss out on slightly better city mpg and smallness for the city parking, it is absolutely not worth paying a big fucking tax on something like that especially when it's going to be my beater
>>
>>29052072
Also I'm considering a Toyota matrix/Pontiac vibe maybe
>>
>>29052072
Don't get me wrong, I like the Fit. It's a solid, reliable everyman's car but is also light and simple enough to be a little fun (and it was a common car for engine swaps for a while). They are fairly expensive for what they are. Everyone from grandmas to weebs want them.
But, it's FWD. The whole reason the miata is so good is based around the rwd, suspension, and weight. If you wanted a miata, a fit will not suffice.
>>
>>29052072
>like go karts
Fuck no. They're very top heavy with small wheels, immense feeling of tipping over if you dare take a corner at speed like in a miata. You get blown across the road in high winds too.
>memes for how much stuff they can carry
This is true. I've moved a lot of furniture in my fit.

They're cheap on gas though, or at least mine is. Nothing wrong with it in 80k apart from a paint recall that got fixed for free.
>t. 2015 honda fit owner since brand new
>>
>>29052075
>>29052076
Yeah I absolutely never bought into the go kart stuff, I have a Miata anyway so it won't compare.

I like the fit as well but would like the market to reflect the reality like you guys are describing.
>>
>>29052079
I love when people describe an understeery FWD as "driving like a go-kart." That really does it for me xD.
Yeah the Fit's great for a commuter box. Probably does better than the 17-22 mpg I get in my NB. I'm kind of a loner so a miata holds all I ever have needed it to in my 12 years of having them. But I do understand people need to carry passengers and stuff on occasion, the Fit is good for that. You can fit more in a fit than you can in the back seat of a big cab truck.

basically every used car in the US has been overpriced since the chip shortage inflated things ~2020. cars don't depreciate like they used to and this is the new normal for the foreseeable future.

if you're in the market for a car right now you're unironically better off just taking your budget and using it as the down payment on a new car (assuming you have good credit).

I wonder if the cd palyer works in my 20 year old NB, i dont want to hurt the radio by trying to shove a cd in there but i really wanna basically travel back in time and relive my childhood by utilizing CDs instead of youtube and aux cord hacks.
>>
>>29053425
Dude that’s bullshit. Just stick a CD in there, if it’s broken, it’s broken - if it works, it works.
Also, I was driving in the early 00s and I would have loved an AUX option.
I bought a CD DVD burner earlier this year because I feel like they won’t be around much longer. Still haven’t used it, only 1 of 6 speakers works in my car so I uh.. live without. At least the head unit works fully. Some dipshit previous owner fucked the wiring behind the dash and I can’t be assed to fix it.

As an Alabama man I am not allowed to utter a bad word about Hank Williams. I used to live within 5 miles of his old lake house and there’s a restaurant there named Kowaliga after Hank’s song, wooden Indian and all. I’ve been to his museum.
I’m more into his son’s junk but he’s alright with me. Anyway I’m on the way to getting whiskey bent and he’ll bound.
