Why are Toyotas mechanically reliable but structurally prone to rust?
>>
because they are (were) affordable mass market vehicles, meaning they are made of steel, which rusts when exposed to the elements
>>
Jap cars in general, actually pretty much everything jap has always been made with as little materials as possible, they always went with thinner steel.
Also there used to be a thing that jap cars weren't supposed to last beyond the warranty period nor the "usable car age" period in japland which was like 3 years.
THe idea being your car after 3 years was too old and it was time to get it scrapped or the taxes jump up.
>>
>>29043985
You would think a place that gets tons of snow would make the Nip cars more rust proof.
>>
>>29043985
why the fuck does people let it get this bad?
I had to buy a shitbox and it has rust and you can't get rid of it, it's like a fucking cancer. why would you let your car rot god fucking damn it
>>
>>29043985
because they last long enough to become rusty piles of shit
>>
>>29044014
hahaha
>>
>>29043985
what do you do in this situation? would taking an angle grinder to it applying protective coating work?
>>
>>29044035
Take an angle grinder to what? Nigga a chunk of the car is straight up gone, and the area immediately around it is beyond saving, it all needs to get cut out and new material welded in. Sanding only works if there's enough non-rusted material left under the rust that the part in question isn't structurally compromised.
>>
>>29043985
It's weird considering Japan is surrounded by salty sea. You'd think rust protection would be a bigger deal. But then again, who even owns a car in Japan? They're all slave tube people.

It's actually just the mindset of people who live in countries with SPACE and not just overcrowded tiny islands
>>
>>29043985
I live in California so we don't really have rust but the shitty water based paint that they used flakes off from the sun, should have used oil based paint. I have to fault toyota for that and the cheap all plastic no metal bed and door handles that just recently broke off in my 2004 tundra
If you really want to take care of your toyotas and you live in the rust belt, coat the underside. Or buy a used toyota that got the frame replacement because those got coating
>>
car in ops picture is actually a chrysler
you can tell from the shitty paint job
>>
>>29044634
Sure thing ricerspammer
>>
OP is a faggot but also Japan taxes old cars to all hell so most ditch their old cars way before they rust.
>>

This, euroshit gets turned into sodacans before rust sets in

I see lots of 90's euro cars on the road (minus the French crap) but very rarely do I see Toyotas.

Wut?
It had 117K. The engine was the worst thing about it. For some reason the oil filter thread blew off the block of the replacement engine and it knocked like a bastard after that. How does rhe threaded oil pipe leave the block wtf

Salt spray is fuddlore
Look at how many people live along the coast in California. There is no rust issues in Malibu or La Jolla.
>>
>>29043996
not entirely true. framed jap cars, vans and trucks had boxed frames compared to american C frames. its why the hilux is seen as unkillable, a boxed frame is solid. only... if it start to collect salt, water and dirt there is no way to get it out of there and their frame rust inside out.

Yes indeed that doesn't usually happen and it sounds very strange that "for some reason" it happened to you.

>>
>>29045129
It absolutely is not fuddlore, I've seen it first hand - I have two cars from the early 80s, same model:
>Car A: bad condition, high mileage, left out in a paddock for a decade
>lived in a dry climate inland away from the sea

>Car B: good condition, low mileage, kept under cover for most of its life
>live in a coastal city near the beach

Car A would have a light surface rust on things like exposed bolts and the parts of the under carriage which have had the paint wear away but no catastrophic rust.
Car B would have 90% of bolts completely mint, but then there'll be an occasional bolt in a bad spot which has completely rusted away. The under carriage would be mint but then there'll be one fender where the bottom has completely rusted off, the inside of a door will look brand new but there's a rust hole in the bottom.

The differences is obvious.
>>
>>29044762
Yes some surface rust after a scratch =/= rust to integral structures
>>
>>29044760
>Mercedes from 90's stay in excellent shape
LMAO, wrenchlet
>>
>>29044035
You cut out all the fucked up steel, weld in new steel and prime and paint it. Maybe do as the other anon said and squirt some fluid film in there to help prevent future rust.
>>
>>29043985
truthbomb: japan has one of the worst steel sources in the world.

Remember katanas and all those cool japanese swords? Remember that they have to clean them after each cut?

But have you ever asked why? Because those were made with shitty steel and without cleaning, it would rust withing seconds and crack. A few years ago I saw a battle between Polish saber and Japanese katana and katana broke during fight.

Their steel is extremely weak and shit. Always has been. That's why they mastered woodworking without nails, cause they had so little steel and it was so poor.

Then the time went by, we got drugs, airplanes, internet but their kids keep using the same shit-steel that made katanas break in half
>>
>>29045843
also the thickness of steel is key factor. All those old american landyachts were made from thick steel and that's why you can pull out a barnfind after 70 years.

Thickness also saves metal from rust, this is why you can still pull out a WWII tank from mud and it holds pretty good. Because outer layer is rusted but inner layer had no contact with oxygen.

But if you use thin metal then the oxygen is able to penetrate that easily and it does not only rust on the outside but it corrodes from inside and you get that "bubbles" of rust
>>
>>29045843
>>29045845
it's because japanese hands are so tiny
>>
>>29045843
>>29045845
based, but I don't think they are using medieval techniques and steel for cars now.
you know, they can buy steel from another country for their cars.

>>
>>29045129
Agreed. I used to live right on the coast of Florida. There was no rust. You could often even turn the exhaust nuts/bolts of a 30 year old car as if it was new.
>japan has one of the worst steel sources in the world.
It's true, that's why they did a false flag to invade Manchuria during the great depression. They wanted iron and coal to make steel and electricity.
I assume the US has been helping them arrange sources since WWII but that's wild speculation.
>>
>>29046336
Salty roads induce rust, not salty wind. Does California even salt its roads during winter? Rust is a big problem in Scandinavia where roads are salted half the year.
>>
>>29045128
okay, but this is a 2000s era vehicle. have you seen what chevy cavalier for example, the US "equivalent" of a corolla at that time looks like after 25 years of use in the rust belt? every one of the rocker panels and subframes on these things fucking disintegrated to the point that they disappeared from the road 5 years ago.
>>29043985

you spray it out and then wait a few days for it to totally dry, and then apply some sort of rustproofing to it. You can either build a dedicated probey thing to spray the inside of the frame like professional undercoaters do, or just use the straw on pic related and spray inside the frame holes. This stuff doesn't dry, looks like fizzy snot when it goes on and regular snot with dirt stuck in it a couple days later. There's a thin liquid component to it that creeps places you didn't spray, it's traveled about 3 inches in the week since I treated my own frame.

You can also chemically neutralize rust with phosphoric acid and then paint it, but that's not something you can do to frames without stripping every single thing off and dipping it in a bath. $100 worth of spray goop is much easier for the everyman.
>>
>>29046348
Unless you're taking a fresh from the factory car and marinating it for a couple weeks in a pool of fluid film every year you will never coat every little nook and cranny and the rust Jew will still get you. The used market would be a lot better if people treated their shit. Spraying an already rusty vehicle is just chemo to slow down the inevitable.
>>
Let's just ban rust entirely and be done with it. I can't think of a single time it's ever been useful.
>>
>>29046858
but weathering steel uses it
>>
>>29046348
Yeah but the problem is I'm dealing with previous owners who didn't undercoat the car.
The rust was and always has been there.
Now I get to deal with it.
>>
>>29043985
shit quality. other trucks from that period where never as bad as them. i dont know how their frames are worst than 2g dodges or 1g superdutys but god damn these things dont last in the rust belt at all.
>>
>>29043996
They don't get scrapped, they feed them into their used car export industry which is huge, and one can sell their used car for even more than they bought it new.

pretty expensive for 99% mineral oil

Here's what the Safety Data Sheet (SDS/MSDS) for Corrosion Free Rust Cure Formula 3000 shows:

Composition:

Made from 99% pure mineral oils and the proprietary CSC850 corrosion inhibitor
