Because the market trends were obvious in late 2010s. Mazda 3 got a new generation in 2019 but still only sold half of 2015 numbers. CX-5 kept making bank despite no significant changes between 2018 and 2025.

They're wider, more powerful, in the case of the CX50 AWD is standard, compared to the CX5 which is just a typical, safe crossover. The naming scheme is awful though because there was never a CX9 , the CX3 was recently killed and the CX7 was discontinued like 20 years ago. The only overlap that still exists is in the 5 and 50.

i just rented a cx50 a couple weeks ago and as a grumpy "they don't make em like they used to" curmudgeon i was actually pretty impressed. i didn't know much about it (never had any interest in modern cuckovers) but it looked cool (green paint), rode nice, tech was minimal and implemented well, and throttle house were right to gush about the steering feel because that was great too. i would totally consider one if i for some reason were forced to buy a current year cuv. my rental was a non-turbo though and quite slow so i'd want the turbo version
