Why? When was the last time you heard of one failing that resulted in something detrimental to safety?
>>
>>29050768
In case your regular brakes fail you have at least one fallback, another one possibly being the manual gearbox for instantly kicking up engine braking. Also good for rare cases on surfaces where ABS fucks up and doesn't let you stop completely and you keep going down the slope. And also consider that if your battery is dead you might not be able to release the electronic handbrake to push or tow the vehicle.
>>

>And also consider that if your battery is dead you might not be able to release the electronic handbrake to push or tow the vehicle.
This is the worst. I had my alternator die and I always use the parking brake because otherwise me car rolls back and forth every time it parks. Stupid electronic parking brake couldn't be disengaged to get it on the tow truck. They had to call another flatbed truck and charged me double for the extra trip. Fuck electronic parking brakes. Fuck modern cars.

>In case your regular brakes fail you have at least one fallback
Think about what it would take for all 4 brakes in your car to fail with its multiple redundancies built in to the system. Your brake lines and master cylinder would have to fail catastrophically at the same time. That would probably suggest its in disrepair and deferred maintenance. That means the parking brake would also likely be in disrepair such as a rusty cable, ill maintained parking brake caliper, and shitass rotor.
Secondarily, your brake fluid has boiled causing your brakes to fail, you're not stopping a modern car with a parking brake if you're headed downhill at 90mph.
Its called a parking brake for a reason. Anyone calling it an "emergency brake" is a moron.
>another one possibly being the manual gearbox for instantly kicking up engine braking.
You're now manually aware automatic transmissions can do this too. In fact its how most "tow mode" driving options intentionally operate.
>And also consider that if your battery is dead you might not be able to release the electronic handbrake to push or tow the vehicle.
If the vehicle has a dead battery after you've parked it with the parking brake on, where and why the fuck are you going to push it anywhere? A gas station where they don't have a battery for you? And if its being towed, I'll bet any amount of money the tow truck can connect jumper cables to temporarily power the vehicle to release the parking brake.

You're speculating on random shit you don't even understand.
>>
>>29050835
>You're speculating on random shit you don't even understand
Dumb nigger, do you even own a car?

>Think about what it would take for all 4 brakes in your car to fail with its multiple redundancies built in to the system
People on average don't maintain their cars well, that's like saying water is wet. But it has happened to a friend of mine who has a decently kept one, and he had no good choice besides pushing ahead with his multiple hour drive to get to the destination. Also I remember a colleague of mine experiencing the same kind of thing. I have personally had a situation where I realized my brake caliper is failing and I might toast whatever is on front axle or lock up the front wheel so the safe choice was going on brakes lightly and assisting with handbrake when necessary until I can get to a good spot.

>You're not stopping a modern car with a parking brake if you're headed downhill at 90mph
It will stop eventually and getting the speed down is often enough, also handbrakes are typically not hydraulic

>You're now manually aware automatic transmissions can do this too
I was always aware, but autos are not always predictable

>If the vehicle has a dead battery after you've parked it with the parking brake on, where and why the fuck are you going to push it anywhere?
Ever heard of push starting a car? Or pulling with another car to get it running when you don't have jumper cables at hand? And sometimes the vehicle you want to put jumper cables on is face first in a tight spot so you first need to somehow back it out first, another annoyance that I've seen when helping someone. Why are you pretending to be dumb?

And to perhaps elaborate on ABS before someone else has stupid ideas, offroad vehicles tend to have means to turn it off for a reason, especially motorcycles.
>>
>>29050871
>But it has happened to a friend of mine who has a decently kept one
No, thats factually incorrect. Even the NHTSA's statistics about brake failure leading to a crash is less than 0.5%. That includes fucked up rotors and poorly maintained brake systems. Its vanishingly rare for it to have caused the problem and 100% because nobody maintained the vehicle. If you're trying to suggest nobody maintains their vehicle like they should, then that means it includes the parking brake having failed as well. What are you even trying to suggest here, poor maintenance is backed up by poor maintenance?
>It will stop eventually and getting the speed down is often enough, also handbrakes are typically not hydraulic
No shit, you can do the same thing by putting the automatic transmission into L or any other low gear. You're be monumentally stupid for attempting to use the parking brake for a runaway vehicle because it was never intended to be used in emergencies like that. Its intended to be used for PARKING as the name suggests. I also didn't allude it was hydraulic either, you demand a steel cable and still haven't been able to articulate why.
>I was always aware, but autos are not always predictable
What the fuck are you talking about? Every automatic transmission is always predictable. Do you sometimes put it in reverse to back out of a space and start rolling forward? What baltic shithole are you posting from?
>Ever heard of push starting a car?
When was the last time you saw anyone push starting a car? You have to do it with a manual transmission and most people couldn't push a car fast enough now to do it anyway. What NPC do you think is pushing their soap-bar SUV to push start it?
Are you coming up with convoluted excuses as to why you can't jump start a dead vehicle? How long was it sitting in that tight spot with the parking brake engaged for the battery to fail? Weeks? Months?
>>
>>29050871
>offroad vehicles tend to have means to turn it off for a reason, especially motorcycles.
Motorcycles don't have parking brakes you dumbo, and the especially don't have electronic parking brakes.

What jackass is taking their off road vehicle somewhere only for the battery to die after the electronic parking brake was engaged? None of them? What window licker is taking their vehicle off road in such poor condition the brakes fail, battery fails, and the parking brake is their savior but didn't think to bring any useful tools like jumper cables or a jumper pack?

You're coming up with random fantasy scenarios that have probably affected 37 motorists worldwide since the automobile was invented. At least be aware of what electronic parking brakes even do and how they fail. Maybe we can confuse your brain by also telling you when the battery fails automatic transmissions aren't shifted with the center console stick.
>>

>When was the last time you saw anyone push starting a car?
Not who you're arguing with but I quite literally did so an hour ago in the supermarket carpark.
>>
>>29050768
>Why? When was the last time you heard of one failing that resulted in something detrimental to safety?
Quite a few times, actually. I've heard of more than one case where owners of modern shitboxes have had to remove a wheel and literally unbolt the parking brake shoe just to be able to get their car to move.
>inb4 hurr you're parked it's not detrimental to safety
Depends where and when you happen to be parked when your "parking brake" decides to have it's solenoid fail, I suppose, but I'd like to avoid that possibility and inconvenience entirely.

If you lived anywhere where cold weather comes on suddenly you'd know people do tend to get caught with their pants down unaware their battery is shit.

parking brake / hand brake has never been an "emergency" brake and I don't understand how that ever became such a common term for it. if some retard rips the parking brake at speed they're going to spin out and crash in a much worse way than if they downshifted (automatics also engine brake retard) or just turned the car off would be totally avoidable.

Infantilization of adults is a deadly disease, fuck off. Stay off the road if you can't drive. And good luck trying to push the narrative of it being strictly a PARKING brake when people doing any sort of amateur racing or weekend fun rely on it all the time.

>You asked for real occurences, you got them. Them being rare on paper doesn't mean shit.
Okay, then why are you so adamant about the old fashioned manual ones when those are known to physically fail due to linkage stretching, caliper failing, springs failing causing seizing, and other issues?

Are you guys toothless rednecks in some baltic country where you think any car thats under 40 years old and still has most of its body panels is a quality car? Automatic transmissions have been predicable and reliable for the last 60+ years. Certainly longer than you've been alive.
>Why are you such a retard? No one was talking about parking brakes on motorcycles, the point was made regarding ABS shortcomings.
Off road bikes don't have ABS. Thats basically exclusively for on-road bikes because it doesn't make sense to have ABS for a dirt bike. Plus thats not even a standard feature for most bikes up until very recently.

Kinda telling you have nothing other "goy" as an argument now. Just admit you're a moron that doesn't know anything.

You're confusing the way people decide to use something with the way the thing was intended to be used.

Flathead screwdrivers aren't pry bars just because people sometimes use them as such.

Skateboards aren't furniture dollies just because people sometimes use them as such.

Parking brakes aren't emergency brakes just because people sometimes use them as such.

People side down hills because they lock the brakes up. You want your tires rotating as you go down a slippery hill so the tire tread can continuously interface with the surface creating friction to steer the vehicle and slow through engine braking. If you just stand on the brakes you get vidrel.
>>
>>29050784
Tards like you are the reason we have electronic parking brakes. Your dumbass thinks its an emergency brake for emergencies instead of a parking brak, which it fucking is, so you kind never set the parking brake and managed to kill yourselves with your own cars like the dumbasses you are so now we all have to suffer the consequences. The day of the pillow cannot come soon enough.
>>
>>29051515
Everyone was. Turns out I wasn't dropped enough times to think a parking brake should ever be used in an "emergency" and they don't randomly lock up causing you to be stranded. I also didn't eat enough lead to think push starting a car is "normal". I carry jumper cables and a jump pack in my truck because only a retard would think push starting a vehicle is a normal activity done every day.
