The difference is you need to be more familiar with electricity to troubleshoot and fix a larger number of components than with ice. so get a multimeter and learn diy electrician shit and you should be fine
If you can get a BMS and battery modules and know how to not electrocute yourself working with high voltage stuff then you could build one from scratch if you wanted

It's such a heavy mass and fire hazard in the event of a crash that they actually do want it all caged up to meet safety regs in the event of a crash3. Probably at least 20% of unashamedly trying to sell cars as a service, mercedes have been most egregious with this by not even giving you the ability to pop the hood without a bit os specialist knowledge and removing some trim.
