Slightly used tires are actually preferred. Theyre lighter and jave been scuffed for better grip. Its actually common in Nascar to put a used set on near the end of the race when theres not many laps left because they grip better than new.

"Slightly worn" is when they start to hook up. That doesnt just stop a lap later. Manufacturers design tires to grip til the end on race day. Which is why you see tires explode on front runners in NASCAR- the grip was there until the rubber was gone because they were trying to stay in front and didnt pit and they hit belts.
Yes there's overheating issues also where the tires sweat and become "juicy" and thats why there's professionals in the pit crew deciding what compound to run based on weather and track speed / condition / blag blah blah.

If youre in a short-circuit class then you can hit heat cycle issues where theres tread left but the tire has morphed into Lego plastic because you did 10 laps and the race was over.
