What's /o/s thoughts on Landrover defender? I've always thought they looked cool and I'm now in a position that I'm able to afford one, but I'm not sure it's the wisest decision. I've found one I like on Facebook marketplace, a 2011 110 TDCi with 85k miles on it. Seems like about average miles for the age on the ones for sale around me. I've heard mixed things about that engine. More reliable and smoother to drive but harder to work on than the older onesPic somewhat related. Not the one I'm looking at but similar
Everything ages and wears out a faster than on a conventional modern car due to the old fashioned design. It's going to require more regular maintenance, repairs and attention in general than your usual 15 year old shitboxAnd the seating position is very awkward, pressed against the door. Could be uncomfortable to drive depending on how tall/fat you are. Hanging your arm out of the window isn't much of an option because of the b-pillar
>>29051875I know about the maintenance and awkward seating position. I'm 5'10 and 170lbs so I don't think it's going to cause much of an issue unless I gain a lot of weight.
You better take it off roading and not be a bitch

I had one. Mine was TD5 but basically the same shit. The 2.2s blow up randomly if you don't replace the injectors, the 2.4s are a better motor though. Pumas had the shitty axle flanges, so you should budget for a set of maxidrive flanges and to convert to oil filled bearings from the grease that they have. Easy job, just needs a different seal in the back end of the bearing. The other thing that the Pumas fail is the output shaft of the gearbox. Medium job to do, transfer case has to come out so if you're paying the man to do it it can get expensive.Good cars though.
Have had 2 300 90 TDI pickups. Still have one now.I live on an small island with no straight roads where if you go above 50 mph in anything you are going fast so driveability is a non issue for me but they would be shit on a highway for a long time. You need to be ready to tinker. Nearly all the time. However they complain a lot before they leave you strainded so if you see anyone on the side of the road trying to get it going again they have been ignoring an issue for over 6 months sometimes years. My neighbor has 2 TD5's right now and they have been mechanically alright with him but he had to rechassis one and they all seem to accumulate chassis rust faster than normal if they are in a road salt area. Could be due to brits not washing them off thinking that they dont rust. I know 9 people also with 300 TDI's off the top of my head as those are standard here but one other dude as well with a 2.2 puma. Countless of them in peooles backyards with them saying they will fix them one day. They all require tinkering and the older you go the more you have to tinker.
>>29052194To add to that the 200 and 300 TDI are much easier to drive at slow speed than any of the electronic injection ones. The TD5's and the PUMAs have anti stall that can actually get you going too fast off road if you get close down to idle and at the same time if you get them below a certain threshold they are easier to stall. A 200/300 will just dump fuel to keep itself alive as the injection pump goes to "engine start" fuel flow where as the electro ones kill it so there isnt a puff of smoke.
