they're updating it! as its 30 years old, meaning they will probably produce it for another 5 years at least

for reference the dodge ram van production lasted 33 years, the jeep wagoneer lasted 31 years, in a couple years this could be the longest running chassis ever made

and it still has a v8, solid rear axle, and rear wheel drive

Not even close. The Suburban is coming up on 90 years of non stop production. After that it's probably second place. The last gen Frontier is up there too.

You used to be able to get these with the 6.6 Duramax which is based. The 400hp V8 ain't too bad either. What does the European mind think of that?

For me, the Dodge Ram Van was more comfortable and offered more utility.
The 5.9 Magnum offered decent power
It's too bad that Dodge pulled the plug in 2003

D22 outbuilt the D40 by a long shot

Likely because Dodge being Dodge made shitty vehicles and nboody wanted them anymore. They imported the promaster that was just too large and too expensive and somehow worse quality.

Ford's econoline vans suffered from a similar problem; they cheaped out on stuff people wanted like an overly powerful engine without great expense so their full size vans paled in comparison to the Chevys. Ford nearly had a hit with the transit connect vans imported from europe; a lot of people appreciated the tiny vans, but of course Ford being Ford cheaped out on the transmissions made of glass pushing people away from them.
I still hear legends of guys with these tiny vans going well over 200k miles with junkyard transmissions or rebuilds, but your average tradesmen isn't going to do all that. The full size transit again was far too big for trades and mostly used as a resort people carrier because they were as big as a bus.

Chevy likely makes little to no money on these, but considering the design hasn't changed in 30 years and they're the only ones making a work van, why would they stop?

That's the longest running nameplate, not longest running single chassis design. A 1936 Suburban shares absolutely nothing in common with a 2026 one other than sharing the name and general body style, while you could take some parts off of a 2026 Express and bolt them to a 1996 Express. There was a major update in 2003 (all new engines, new front suspension and rear axles, rear discs instead of drums, front and rear styling, frame tweaks) so there's less carryover to 96-02 vans but still some.
