To answer the OP's question, I would recommend the 981 Cayman. It won't be as expensive as a 718, and you'll still have a flat-6 no matter which option you end up with. The engines from this generation tend to be the most stout of the bunch. 718s tend to not experience engine trouble, but have pretty brittle water pumps. For what it seems you want, that generation is a nice sweet spot.

Know that whenever you're buying a used performance car, you're going to want to refresh the suspension and other parts on the car, so have that budgeted.
