All that matters is if you let off the brake pedal before engaging the parking brake. If so the car is resting against the parking pawl, if not then the parking brake is holding the vehicle. But contrary to /o/ fuddlore the pawl is not made of eggshells and won't explode unless your car is trash, that said the parking brake still feels better

The only two things that matters is to hold the foot brake until you hand brake, and to not reengage the transmission until you neutral shift, which can happen before or after you hand brake. Anything else is autism, and everyone who got a license should confidently know.
