Don't be silly, you don't need a special license for spoons. Spoons are cutlery and in the UK you can't buy cutlery is you're under 18 and that's been in effect since at least 2009. Many stores will use personal judgement and not card people for spoons, but they're breaking the law.

Howdy anon
I love your rapide. Thank you for talking with me at length about your ownership experiences in private.
After a lot of deliberation im leaning toward a b8.5 RS5 though. Its more DIY friendly than an aston and a lot cheaper. Not to mention VAG specialists are pretty common here in the US; AM not so much.
>>
>>29060501
Life is magnificent with it. Apart from it's very thirsty nature. It can be a bit quirky, especially if the battery gets a bit low. I have one niggle when filling up that the fuel pump cuts off making filling up taoe longer. But I've had no actual problems with it what so ever. I love it.

Greetings anon, and thank you!
It was absolutely a pleasure. We were more than happy to talk to someone who was genuinely considering one.
I completely understand why you may look at an RS5, especially as VAG products will be easier to source parts compared to AM in the US. There is always time, maybe in the future you may spot a lovely Vantage and be ready to go for it. But i'm really pleased you're still around.

Alas no. I work in civil engineering and not all car parks and sites are equal. It will get driven to work if either the daily is having repairs/if I fancy it though. Last year I did near 10,000 miles in it though, so it does get driven.

Its still deeply appreciated that you both would take the time to humor my questions. Theres something to be said about the type of people a certain car attacts and what that does to the ownership experience. I honestly had kind of forgotten about the v8 rs5 at the time but its very much the same genre of car. A beautifully styled GT with an incredible engine.
Both cars are above my income level to maintain if I need to rely on dealer or specialist servicing for everything, but the Audi at least has the benefit of being based on mass produced platforms and has far better documentation and DIY support, as opposed to a hand made british exotic.
The VH v8 vantage will always remain a bucket list car though. If I ever find myself with an exceptional sum of money to burn, there will be a spot in my garage for it.

Ive accepted the chains. They're inevitable as a long term ownership proposition and I want to keep this car so my plan is to just get gud. I am studying this car in the way you'd study a plane you're expecting to fly.
I am gathering factory tech manuals, diagrams, torque spec sheets, trudging through forums. Getting special tools, a quick jack system, subframe cradle and VDCS are also on my list. When the day comes I'll be labeling connectors, taking photographs, organizing components, using cardboard bolt templates and so on. Ive watched probably 30+ hours of content on the audi 4.2 family being worked on. I want to be able to independently handle any job that isnt a catastrophic engine or gearbox failure.

The people who own them at least in this country tend to be very personable, approachable and really enthusiastic people. So far I haven't had any bad experiences with them.
I completely understand the choice of possibly going for the RS5, it does make sense. But I will say the forums for Aston are teeming with DIY tips and help. They definitely can be worked on and bits done yourself. Hopefully one day you join the club.

>>29060775
It is long (maybe not by American standards) it's 5 meters/16.45 feet. The problem with that space was there was a bollard right on the back line behind it. So without it it could go back a bit more. But a lot of car parks in the UK still think we still drive MG Midgets and Austin Healey Sprites.

>>29060818

> The VH v8 vantage will always remain a bucket list car though
I sat in one recently when car shopping. It looked perfect in person (from the photos I wasn’t sure about the vantage vs db9), and felt great inside, but it isn’t a massive interior so if you’re fat & tall it might be challenging.
I saw an automatic here (JP) selling for $18k recently. It had uhh…. questionable provenance though (it was a repo but the old owner wasn’t cooperative/was dead and they hadn’t sued to change the name on the paperwork or something). Ownership and registration work a bit differently here. But anyway, if you bid on japanese auction cars they typically go for $28-30k and I bet you could get an automatic for ~$25k now (retail price just dropped to $31k as more cars hit the used market recently).
>>
>>29061008
Meanwhile almost all homes in Italy and Spain have AC, so yes, it is kind of a meme
>>
>>29061019
I'm a bit of fat bong (losing weight thank fuck). I've crammed my self into Atoms and Caterhams. I was in a VH DBS and I was surprised how much cozier it is compared to my Rapide. So even at my fatness I can fit in it no problem you'd have to be a giga ham planet to not fit.
Just so you know, the vantage auto's are not really auto's. The are a robotised manual f1 style gear box, so you need to be lifting as if you were changing gear in a manual other wise changing gear won't be smooth and you'll butcher the clutch. The DB9, DBS, Rapide and Gen 2 Vanquish have your actual auto's with either a zf6 or zf8.

But the anon you're talking to has extensively looked at them. I think his main concern is the upkeep and getting parts in the US. They are DIYable, but from what I hear, a lot of US customers just buy parts from the UK half the time.

Obviously its not going to be as 'special' as an Aston, but I view the RS5 being based on mass produced VAG products as a point in its favor. For example the suspension arms and many other parts for a base A5 fit the RS5 and are the same across the entire platform. Having tools like VCDS is a win for the audi as well. Part of me wanting to DIY is a money saving cope ofc, but its also because I have a deep distrust of most dealers and shops due to many bad experiences ive had handing shops money and getting back damaged vehicles or work that wasnt done to my expectations. In the last 6+ years, ive only been to shops for tire mounting (i dont even bring the vehicle, just the wheels), a transmission+diff rebuild, and alignments. Everything else I do myself and I like it that way.
Ill always have a deep appreciation for Aston Martins, but ive really grown to love how cracked Audis cars are.
I remember when I was a wee lad and the RS5 was new; to me it was a cooler car than even the R8, and if I had to choose one id take the RS5 every time. I just totally forgot they existed because I couldnt afford one, but now that im an adult its actually attainable

>Our second hand market is really decent in comparison.
This is actually true though. The UK's 2nd hand market is very good and highly saturated so you can get good deals. Of course a bunch of "new arrivals" means you also run the risk of buying something accident damaged they lied about and sold at a high-ish price.
Moral of the story; don't buy from the "new arrivals".
>>
>>29060529
That is awesome, well done bro.
>>
>>29061127
Its true for other cars too. Some anon told me RS5s are like 15-18k cars over there. Here in the US its more like 25-30+ for top tier examples. It seems that way for a lot of domestically made cars in the UK vs US.

Was this only true for Speedshift I or all three? Some online forums say later Speedshifts fixed it.
>>

Pretty much all 3. It's quite common people replace their clutch with the twin plate from a V12 as they are more robust.

Mine is a freakin head turner. Everrryyyonnneee looks at me. It's actually uncomfortable sometimes. I just want to enjoy it because it's a great car all around; like it really is an awesome fun car to drive with an excellent stock sound system... and some days I don't even want the attention. Mine is a bright orange C8 though so it stands out quite a bit. I found another orange C8 today in a parking lot and waited but the owner never came out :(

The Merc GT is also a really cool car; it's just difference in taste really, and also the GT is much much more expensive to maintain than the C8
