Going to change my spark plugs and hear that Iridium plugs last forever.

Any truth to that?

Anybody have any good results with Iridium spark plugs?

get the ones recommended by your manufacturer, double check the gap before you install, and ffs use a leaf blower or a shop vac and clean around the engine before you do anything

This but also

Be SUPER careful where you buy sparkplugs from, tons of china fakes everywhere

Iridiums are old news. I run NGK Ruthenium HX's

according to the site these will fit

but do they last forever like i hear people claim?

Iridium will run for a quarter million miles.

thats why i like ebay at least their sellers have actual pictures of the item. but i have so many auto parts stores around me i planned on buying them from an actual store
>>29062306
>Iridium will run for a quarter million miles.
thats what i hear. but do any of you folks actually use iridium spark plugs?
>>
>>29062526
I work on helicopters that do agricultural spraying, they'll burn through regular spark plugs in around 300 hours. A few have fine wire iridium plugs and apart from the occasional failure (electrode breaking off) I've never replaced one due to wear
>>
>>29061863
they don't last forever, they last around 100,000 miles
only use them if your car was designed for iridiums, otherwise it'll run worse.

>Iridium plugs last forever
The plugs in the 130,000 miles 916 Spider I just bought were NGK iridium. There's no Alfa markings on the plug, so I assume they've been replaced at some point, but they were completely and utterly fucking toasted.

interesting. what do you think caused them to burn up like that?
>>29062536
>I've never replaced one due to wear
guess my way of looking at this is as follows... iridium plugs supposedly last forever so i figured why not just use them and then never have to worry about having to change the plugs ever again. but then i see they do wear out...
>>
>>29062315
>>29062417
Coudn't you in theory build the block and head to accept this new ignition system and maintain the compression ratio to conventional levels?
>>
>>29062758
>interesting. what do you think caused them to burn up like that?
Age. I have records dating back as far as 1998, yet I see not a single trace of the spark plugs ever being changed - if that is the case, then it's entirely possible they're the original plugs, and we can assume they've lasted nearly 30 years and 130,000 miles, which is a little over the claimed lifetime of iridium plugs. Extremely impressive and arguably beyond the expected lifetime of the car, but nothing quiti lasts "forever".
>>
>>29062774
Spark plugs are a wear item.
First need to make then last 300k and immune to fouling.
>>
I don't think about spark plugs.
I've had several 30 year old cars on most-likely stock plugs upwards of 300k miles. They basically last forever.
Anyway iridium is a VERY rare metal that is only found in tiny amounts at layers of the earth from where asteroid impacts occurred. Most is from the Chicxulub impact that killed the dinosaurs.
Maybe humans will find a better use for iridium in the future, why waste it in spark plugs when regular ones last basically forever anyway?
>>

Fpbp and knows ball

>>29061863
They're worth it, but there is absolutely a non-zero chance that you get shipped lemons. When you have a proper plug, they ARE all that the hype makes them out to be. I have a cheap spark plug testing thing you plug in an outlet put 2 spark plugs in it then turn a knob to simulate the various rpm demands so you can essentially see and hear the sparkplugs effectiveness in real time. Best 20-40 bucks I've ever spent (can't remember cost, but it was absolutely cheap) I've been shipped bad spark plugs 3 times now from different suppliers and its just saved so much time for me/better running cars.

Also the buzzing sound and lil lightnin bolt tickles the tism so yeah. Buy a spark plug tester.
>>
>>29062792
With that many spark points, wouldn't you need to do a head gasket replacement basically at the same time of replacing the spark plug plate?
>>
>>29062799
>Why would anyone want pieces of the meteorite that caused the dino extinction to power your car
Fuck them dinosaurs that's why, you're telling me you DONT want a piece of the literal thing that turned OP meta top tier apex predators into mere liquid that powers our cars?
>>
>>29062809
Not when it costs more for the same thing. A spark plug is a spark plug. It doesn't matter how strong the spark is as long as it ignites the mixture. And normal cheap plugs last forever these days.
Sounds rad as hell though when you put it like that.
>>
>>29062818
Better spark does matter, not so much for stock jalopies
>>
>>29062835
>Better spark does matter
No, it doesn't. It really doesn't.
>>
>>29061863
Direct injection cars are very sensitive to what plugs to use.
Use the OEM ones.
Buy from a 1st party.
The China boys have tons of fakes.
>>
>>29062842
You're entitled to believe in whatever fuddlore you want man.
>>
>>29062849
Think about it. The energy to push the piston is from the expanding gasses of burning the fuel mixture. The spark plug just starts the ignition and the rest is a chemical chain reaction, it doesn't matter if it's 5x "stronger" a spark, it just has to ignite the fuel. And as long as it can ignite the mix, it's as good as any other plug.
>>
>>29062854
A weak spark causes poor fuel burn. A strong spark causes more complete burn.
Think about this - when you replace your plugs, the first time you start the car afterwards it idles a lot higher and takes a couple minutes to go back down to normal. This is because the old plugs were performing poorly and the car was compensating by adjusting spark timing and other things. With new plugs the air/fuel mixture is burning ao much better that it has to adjust back everything to bring the idle down.
>>
>>29063106
>when you replace your plugs, the first time you start the car afterwards it idles a lot higher and takes a couple minutes to go back down to normal.
Only the minimum is required to set off the chain reaction of burning fuel. Excess spark is just converted to heat in the combustion chamber.
You're full of shit. It's just a spark plug.
>>
>>29063138
shut the fuck up boomer, modern cars arent allowed to violate emissions or noise for more than 5 microseconds, the ECU overrides whatever the fuck your leaded-gas-fume addled brain thinks about how cars work

Dawg, I'm a mechanical engineer. I've driven catless over a decade. More spark does not mean more power. I don't even have to call you names, look it up if you want.

>appeal to authority fallacy
Just because you're an engineer doesn't mean you know anything about spark plug design, flame wave propagation in pressurized environments, or anything else you're claiming to be an expert at. Just because the plug creates a spark doesn't mean it's a good spark. A weak spark causes poor flame propagation and incomplete burn - like trying to set a house on fire with a single match. A strong spark has a lot of energy and ensures a complete burn - like me showing up to your house with a five gallon gas can and some road flares.
If 'a spark is a spark', then why replace plugs at all? According to you even if they're worn out just re-gap them so they spark and throw em back in
>>
>>29063449
I’m not claiming to be an expert, I hardly think about spark plugs at all. I’m just saying. I’m not an idiot kid.
Every piece of evidence I see (from sites not selling or advertising things) says that the spark sets the ignition off, that’s all it does. It does not hasten flame propagation or ensure that more of the fuel mix is burned.
>>
>>29063638
jesus, youre retarded. where did you get your ME degree? GATech or Purdue?
>>

General Motors Institute, it was in the top 10 at the time.
You haven't shown me any evidence that I'm wrong. And everything I've looked up says I'm correct (other than ads, obviously).

checks out. I deal with a high number of engineers, and nearly every single one that's (only) a mech engineer is a walking case study for the dunning kruger effect for anything outside their specialty
>>
>>29064061
So you're saying that putting in NGK Iridiums will give me more hp?! Gee willikers I'mma buy all the finest from Vatozone! Oh boy!
Stronger spark does not equal better combustion, quicker flame front propagation, or more fuel burned. It thus won't make any difference as long as the spark can ignite the fuel chemical reaction that gives you power.

didnt realize they were that overpriced but they have the rent and employees to pay
>>29064072

these plugs will last longer than any other. therefore, the spark should not deteriorate as quickly as other plugs
>>
>>29061884
>NGK Ruthenium HX's
They only really work if your vehicle's ignition system has a habit of eating iridium plugs due to extremely high voltage output and you go WOT all the time. That's where they're strongest at, so for a daily commuter where it stays at cruising speed, waste of money and iridium do the job fine.
>>
>>29063138
As someone who runs multiple fuels, spark strength and duration both matter for a complete burn.
