Is Fumoto the best option for an oil change where you don't get an oil bukkake?
>10 cents for a pair of gloves>$40 for the cheapest oil valveso 400 oil changes before it pays for itself x 5000 miles per changeyou have to drive 2 million miles for the valve to break evenalso it hangs down further than a drain bolt, raising the chances it is broken off by a rock or stump, draining all your oil without you knowing about itverdict: stupid/10
>>29061971The only situation where they would make sense is if you got a really cunty oil pan that directs the stream of oil onto a crossmember or exhaust pipe. A hose would make that cleaner. Otherwise it's probably better to just learn how to outsmart a stream of oil. Also what's the point when the oil filter still makes the biggest mess?
>>29061983+1Plus every modern car has some gay splash shield that requires removing multiple fasteners. Why add an extra point of potential failure instead of unscrewing one more bolt?
>>29061975Its not about saving money you penny pinching miser. I can attach a piece of tubing to the valve nipple, insert tubing into an empty oil jug, and drain the oil without burning my hand, rapping my knuckles on anything breaking the bolt loose, getting dirt in my eye, or dealing with an oil pan since I do it on my garage floor. The only thing I have to clean now is the tubing if I really feel like re-using it, or I can just toss it in the oil jug as a treat to the recycler. Then on top of that I never have to worry about stripping a drain plug, cracking a plastic oil pan, torque values, copper washer seals, anything. Its just a valve that werks. Thats not to mention the undertray panel I don't specifically have to remove anymore because the hose can be attached through the access hole now. Its a matter of convenience and cleanliness. The first time I used mine I didn't go through a whole can of brake cleaner or simple green cleaning up the tools, oil pan, engine bay, or garage floor. I didn't use 37 blue shop towels, or a couple pairs of gloves. I only needed the filter wrench and a light as the necessary tools.
>>29062320>The musings of a wrenchletlmao
Oil extractor wins on a car that has the filter accessible from the top. No need to lift the car in the air at all.

>>29062354Why are you so mad and insecure? Buy the toy if you want it so bad. Most men don't see the need to spend $40 when they can change their oil without spilling it everywhere like a chimpanzee.
>>29062370>Why are you so mad and insecure? You're the one that started name calling because I did something with my vehicle. >most menHow would you know and why are you using woman logic of relying on consensus?
>>29062320>it hangs down further than a drain bolt, raising the chances it is broken offyou didn't address this point, which on its own is enough to make me avoid this productalso it adds complexity and failure points to something that is and should be dead simple. Could a raccoon open it when it grabs for the shiny thing?
If you can't remove your drain plug without covering your hand in oil you're a retard.
>>29061971Do Fumoto even make a 1" 1/2 sump plug?
It only makes sense to me to get one if the vehicle has burly aftermarket skid plates that protect the area much better
>>29062334my engine has a top accessible oil filter and enough ground clearance I can slide underneath and work on it with no lifting
i have skid plates and a fumotoi use the L-shaped valve on the rotatable banjo bolt to ensure good clearance, my car is smashed n' slammed and the front skids get bashed up really good. never had an issue.quite frankly if you are driving a low-enough car hard enough to have to worry about whacking your oil pan, much less its bolt on things you might need to rethink your stance setup, there's definitely some cars it would be bad to even put the l-shaped fumoto on because of where the drain plug is located, but that's not all use cases. for most cars you are going to trash your front subframe and break other parts before there is a clearance issue with a drain valve. at least on my car my power steering rack is in more danger than the fumoto valve is.
>>29062397There are adjustable ones that don't have to extend straight down. A normal drain plug can be improperly tightened and fall out completely, and this is a ball valve like every fluid valve you've ever seen, the drip you have shown here is likely from a freshly shut-off valve that just had some surface tension holding it up. But yeah, let's risk stripping the oil pan threads and have to keep fucking with crush washers. Also, let's drain into a big slop bowl and then have to painstakingly put that into a container so it can be disposed of vs. just running a hose straight to the container.>>29062334I looked into this, but none of my cars have a topside oil filter (until I install a relocation kit to my skyline) and apparently not all dipsticks allow the plastic tube to easily get to the sump if they have lots of bends that the dispstick can snake though.
>>29062397>you didn't address this pointI have a vehicle made this millenia that doesn't stick the drain bolt right there so its not something I had to consider for my specific vehicle or many others. However if I had to hazard a guess thats still above your k-member and you'd have to severely bottom out the vehicle before it became an actual hazard. I can support this rebuttal by the condition of your oil pan in that photo, it doesn't even have a scratch on it suggesting a rock or tow strap has never whipped up and touched it. >also it adds complexity and failure pointsIt doesn't. This is wild speculation because its different from a bolt. How many people on /o/ have stripped out an oil pan bolt thread? How many people on /o/ have lamented the last shop to work on their car or a car they just bought was torqued with far too many uggaduggas? Or permanently sealed with some epoxy or silicone to stop the leak and sell the stupid car? Probably a lot. How many people with newer vehicles fitted with plastic oil pans have cracked them or stripped out the brass insert? A few of the early models at least. >Could a raccoon open it when it grabs for the shiny thing? No, the lever itself has a spring and a shelf. Plus theres a plastic clip that helps keep it in place as a triple failsafe. How many other shiny things do you know of where a racoon is grabbing and wrecking on a vehicle?
>>29062478well argued, whoever pays you to shill is getting their money's worth. I'm stuck on raccoons because I had to work on my mom's storage building roof last weekend and they've been living and shitting up there for years and I can still smell it just thinking about it.

>>29062517and yet this is not a denial
>>29062517And yet you came on here to mention it by the brand name and to argue in favor of it against random indians and bots. As a large language model, I do not understand why you would do this for no monetary compensation.
>>29063078Because Fumoto is a specific type of oil drain valve, I was open to hearing if there were other brands/models/types that do the job better. They seem to run roughly uncompeted, possibly due to extensive patent protection.
>>29063737A lot of rental fleets run these on their 5 ton trucks. They're a lot lower profile and seem better engineered than a fragile external valve.
>>29062407Don't care. Keeping mine old school. Likely flows out better too.
>>29061971Is this really something that enough people have trouble doing that a product exists to "fix" the problem?
>>29061971The main complaint people have with drain valves is that the threads stick out too far, and the residual oil on the bottom is usually the stuff with metal particles in it.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kia-AJfUNhw
Lol they sell locking clips to these things as well, talk about reinventing the wheel.
>>29061971Stand/lay behind the drain plug rather than in the direction the oil will flow out of the plug when you remove it. I have never gotten oil on myself doing it that way. I had a coworker who learned the hard way to do that with the nasty sooty black oil from a diesel truck. He got absolutely fucking soaked from his hair to his waist and had to drive home shirtless and go take a shower with lots of vigorous scrubbing to get it all out.
>>29063751Looks cool, but can you also fill the oil pan with it?I have a pressure fillerWould be baller to use it to fill oil up from below.
>>29063850But the normal drain plug threads aren't at the extreme bottom in many cases, either, so it's splitting hairs. That's also what the oil filter is for.
>>29063751But now you have to have a secondary part you have to keep track of, etc.
>>29061971I use these and they're pretty clean. My garage gets hit with leaking hydraulic fluid instead. I just use the bioremediation powder and clean my concrete that way.
>>29063931I don't see why you couldn't. Not too sure why you would though. >>29063941Attach it to your oil filter wrench or something. Worse case you just use it like the normal drain plug.

>>29063991Can't you answer your own question or something?
>>29063989this was sloppy technique plus inappropriate oil catch basin. Pressing the drain plug into its hole while unscrewing would have let the person hinge the plug away from the hole at a time of their choosing, and those 1 piece drain pans suck for catching oil in exchange for easy transferring to another container.
>>29061971I use a fumoto and use a length of hose that connects to a pneumatic fluid extractorliterally zero mess, it sucks the oil out in a few mins without even the slightest threat of a drop of oil touching the ground
>>29064043>Pressing the drain plug into its hole while unscrewing would have let the person hinge the plug away from the hole at a time of their choosingWhile that works for more modern plugs that don't need a 2 1/16 inch or 52mm wrench, I can promise you that having tried exactly that on our other flathead, it doesn't really work on these - all it does is leak hot oil over your hand until you yank it out of the splash zone. The bottom of the plug doesn't seal for shit once it's loose of the thread.>those 1 piece drain pans suck for catching oil in exchange for easy transferring to another container. That oil container has been perfectly fine for all of my oil changing needs until that Flathead, the reason it failed here was due to it having a drain hole roughly 1/4 of the size of the sump plug - the sump drained the oil *significantly* faster than the pan could. Next time I'm just gonna put the car on the ramp and use a bucket.

>>29065051>its impossible to not get hot engine oil on your hands while removing a drain bolt. You use a fluid extractor to get 90% of the oil out of the engine from the dipstick tube. >>29062320This guy gets it. My time is worth $40 through the life of the car easy. I've been wrenching for years. Every car I've installed them on (Subie, Toyota, Mazda) has never had them run lower than anything under the car. They are literally 3/4" at max. If some spike on the road knocks off the fumoto, I am glad its a $40 part and not anything even more expensive, because you're playing with fire if you ride over anything >10" over the pavement in the middle of your car brother. They do not leak and have never leaked. Don't even need to get your bare hand dirty to unlock it. I spent countless times fishing out a nylon washer that came off the drain plug in a shitty oil pan to know I never want to do that again. Fuck that and fuck you. I've fumoto for life.
>>29067401>If some spike on the road knocks off the fumoto, I am glad its a $40 part and not anything even more expensiveLike the engine you just roached because all your oil was dumped in 10 seconds while you were doing 70mph on the freeway and hit a chunk of 4x4 that fell out of Pedro's truck (?)>They do not leakThis is a false statement. The half dozen you've personally bought may not have leaked but they still have a failure rate and other people have had issues. The threads protrude into the oil pan which means you never get the the worst of the heavy particles out (carbon or metal shavings). Its a gimmick for lazy people. Theres a reason no vehicle manufacturer installs them from the factory.

>>29067611>you're an idiot for caring how dirty the bottom of an oil pan getsI don't care how dirty it gets. I don't need it seeping oil to the floor, I don't want the garage stinking like a jiffy lube, and I don't want it staining something. Not everyone lives in a singlewide with a dirt driveway.
>>29067501Yes. I am aware that all parts have failure rates. I'd wager there are just as many oil pan bolts that get stripped off by wrenchers, and require expensive and PITA tapping. Pedro's 4x4 can just as easily shred your brake line, suspension rod, gas line, radiator, etc. If you're going to make up potential critical car damages, I can do it too buddy. Any 4x4 that will blow offf a 3/4" brass bolt inside a recessed engine cavity, will wreck anything at that point, and be far more expensive than an empty oil pan. Not an argument against fumoto. Plenty of auto manufacturers don't put their oil bolt the way you show in your AI scam pic (Volkswagen / Mazda /etc.) so a fumoto will drain just as well. PIc related. And in the example you show, oil is not being cycled at the rate you think in an oil pan and certainly not firing oil in a dredging motion DIRECTLY at the oil bolt location. Any minor dirt sitting around the bolt is staying there forever. Again, imagining a disaster situation that never exists because a Fumoto salesman fucked your girl back in the day.As a mechancal engineer in the car industry, I can tell you the decision criteria for whether to include something in a car is far, far removed from what you think the decision criteria is. Car makers fought tooth and nail to prevent rear backup camera's being installed even though they literally have hever had a single case of a child backed over by a car with one it. Regardless of any slight amount of shit left over in the bottom, theres a reason you start up the engine and get it all hot and cycle the oil passages. Its to help suspend all the bullshit in the oil you're about to drain anyway. It doesn't all fall to the bottom of the oil pan as soon as the engine shuts off and then its trapped inside the engine forever. Similarly, it'd be like lambasing the guys using those oil vacuum devices. >BUT ITS NOT SUCKING UP ALL THE SEDIMENT AT THE BOTTOMYep, because there isn't a flowing current of oil taking it all out of the drain bolt!If OEMs were really focused on boomer oil myths, they could install a resevoir above the engine and include a loud pump that injects oil at 100psi through the engine as the fuel pump engages and cite that annoying startup sound/procedure as a wear preventing feature.

A commercial boiler in a fucking hotel is literally the same amount of metal as a car, but costs like $500k+ plus tip with zero warranty or support. But thats a side issue. The car backup cam I cited s a perfect example of this. While including a $15 part is not problem, the wiring harness supplier has to now add a two way wire, and the AV unit supplier under contract doesn't want to have to put in a new panel and both will lie through their fucking teeth and exagerrate the actual cost so the middle manager car makers now think a $15 camera costs $1500 even though it doesn't actually. Lawyered up corporations will say the poor kids backed over by cars wasn't THEIR fault and only the drivers. They can drag this shit out for years. Finally, some consumers get together and lobby enough to get the government to implement mandates for these things through NHTSA regulations by using pictures of crying women and photogenic roadkill babies. Not saying its right or wrong, but saying the mechanical engineer designed the oil pan drain location EXPLICITLY to optimize dirt capture and removal is a big fucking assumption with no basis in any fact.Remember gentlemen, we have been using suitcases for over 800+ years, but only 40 years ago somebody said "hey lets put some wheels on these heavy pieces of shit". I've heard quite often it takes about $1billion just to redesign a car. Not an "all new" car, just a full refresh before the all new. So I do agree with you it is a manufacturing miracle how cheap vehicles are considering the overall expenditure that goes into minor bullshit. >>29067734that is the inside of a factory pentastar oil pan and i happen to own a pentastar powered automobilenot only do the threads for the pan extend far deeper than a fumoto valve even goes, the drain isn't even at the absolute bottom of the pan, even WITHOUT a fumoto valve there is at least a half pint or less of oil left in the bottom after every change. the fumoto actually makes it easier to evacuate that last bit of leftover crud because you can pour fresh oil in while the valve is open and close it when the flow turns from black to gold.
>>29068615>only broken one is a f*rd you get what you fuckin deserve
>>29068406people seething about data centers but not seething about amazon fulfillment centers or governmnet blacksites or other administrative waste are fucking retarded niggers who should stop holding us back and die or commit acts of terrorism to back up their words.
>>29068640>seething about data centers but not seething about amazon fulfillment centersIts the sifference between a pic&pull and a nuclear waste dump site.
