Its pretty interesting that America is by far the most car obsessed nation on earth and yet 90% of Americans cant drive a manual. You'd think it would be the exact opposite
>>29063029There’s like 10 manual cars and trucks in my driveway right now, and I own them all, I’ve manual swapped 3 of my vehicles because they were auto and I wanted manual
>>29063039Then you represent an absolutely tiny minority
>>29063039You're like the Spiders Georg of US manual owners. Doesn't mean much when most don't even have one.
>>29063029Blame women
>>29063029They just had a head start on the adoption of automatics. Most people get nothing out of driving manual. America might be "car obsessed" but the majority of people aren't car enthusiasts. Even the majority of people who buy expensive cars aren't car enthusiasts, it's just an image thing.
>>29063029Most people aren't enthusiasts chief.
>>29063093No, they are not. Average American man is 200 lbs today. I'm 135-142 nearing 40, of course I've only had manuals. I'm surrounded by lardasses.
>>29063029we wouldn't have manual sports cars at all if it weren't for americans since europeans aren't car enthusiast at all and don't care about driving pleasure.
>>29063039I wish my dick was even half the size of MrCummy.
>>29063101Japs keep the manual alive more than anyone else
>>29063110by not buying manual anything?
didn't VW keep the manual option alive longer in the Golf R exclusively for the US and not Europe?you'd think it'd be the other way around if Euros supposedly drive manuals more than Americans
A car centric country isn't necessarily a country comprised of enthusiasts.Britain invented trains but they don't have any bullet trains.
>>29063029Japan is the same way as the USA. Preference for Automatic vs Manual/standard transmission is entirely an income issue. The reason why Manual transmissions are more popular in Europe, Asia, and South America (and Africa) is because those places are poorer and people would rather save $500 or $1000 on a car by getting a manual instead of an automatic. It's the same reason why Automatics are normal and commonplace in the Arab world, because people in the gulf nations with enough money to buy a car just get an auto cause it's easier to drive. Also for what it's worth, Americans are not "car obsessed". The auto industry built the middle class, and the USA is a huge country. Owning a car just makes sense here which is why they became popular in the 1920s. Automatic transmissions work fine, and with enough power there's no benefit to a manual. That's why as soon as V8s became common and normal in the 1950s, the automatic transmission also took over. Besides poverty, the other main reason Manuals are popular in Europe is because of engine size. They tax you more on the size of the engine. If your car has less than 100hp...yeah you're gonna need to be able to shift. But when you have over 150 or 200hp then that really isn't necessary
>>29063039Who gives a shit, dogfucker?
>>29063172In the US manuals are usually more expensive in terms of what people actually pay. They used to be cheaper, but that has not been the case in my 22 years of driving in the US.
>>29063172>Automatic transmissions work fine, and with enough power there's no benefit to a manual. Here's the thing. Even if an automatic is faster by 0.2 seconds, I'm only going to redline the manual. Most auto drivers NEVER redline. I redline every goddamn day. It's the difference between saying "C&D went 6.2 sec in this bad boy" to doing it every day on your commute.
>>29063172
>>29063177Manuals hold value better because enthusiasts prefer them.
>>29063195Yep.Not only is a manual more fun and more likely to get you to actually wind out the car, but you get to thrash the coolest cars and sell them for over what you paid for them. And there's the whole weight shift control thing about *how* you slip the clutch that you can use to induce oversteer or brake faster. Can't do that in an auto.
>>29063039Nobody asked, faggot
>>29063193Now do it by income and compare the taxes. Having a median or mean wealth of over $100,000 means nothing if most of that is your home and then you have to pay like 50k or more per year in taxes. Again, in European countries you have to pay more in taxes to register your care based on the displacement of the engine. That's why in America a 4.6 liter v8 was consider a bare bones standard workhorse engine for plebians and government officials but in Europe that size of engine, regardless of the power it makes, is considered something incredibly luxurious and extravagant. I'm sorry but you're not going to convince me that Europeans are rich but they just buy cars with 1.5 liter engines and 5 speed manual transmissions for enjoyment purposes. If that were true, they'd just pony up and pay the taxes to drive more powerful vehicles. >>29063177>In the US manuals are usually more expensive in terms of what people actually pay>>29063195>Manuals hold value better because enthusiasts prefer them.Sure but that's a modern phenomenon only because automatics became the overwhelming majority of cars by the 1980s or 1990s. And a lot of it is because the only cars you can even option a manual transmission are performance cars or fun cars. No one is paying more for a 2007 Ford Focus with a manual transmission than an automatic transmission. They will pay more for a later model Focus ST. But for basic economy cars the manuals were cheaper at the time when they were sold. Buying a brand new Dodge Neon in 1999 with a manual transmission was a choice you made to save money, not to have fun.
>>29063029It's exactly because it's a car REQUIRED nation that manuals are so rare. If you don't drive, you are basically condemned to be stuck at the bottom of society here. So we bought the beige or grey automatic cuckover in droves.
>>2906302998% of people drive manual bcause they are poor not because they want to.In all honesty after I got better job I also switched to auto box. I don't miss manual at all, would be cool in some fun old beater but for daily - never.
>>29063029America's car culture is about having the largest car that you can afford the payments on. They are symbols of wealth and status. They dont actually like cars, they just want to show their wealth.
>>29063029Automatic is better for everyday driving. Manual is reserved for spirited driving.
>why isnt everyone driving a v8 rwd manual bones on all corners stripped out under 800kg straight pipe plastic window carbon hood racecar like me The answer is far more simpler than just >jews, women, niggers, pajeets, fags, libtards
>>29063195Not where I live, auto is much more expensive especially in small cheap used cars bcause everyone wants those.
>>29063133That's precisely why. Since manuals are mundane in Europe they see automatic transmissions as exotic and luxurious, whereas in the US the exact opposite happens.
>>29063039
>>29063029America is the only on earth that can afford reasonably fun cars
>>29063064And Jews
>>29063099Outdated chart. Surprisingly it's actually gotten better in the past couple years Less fats cuz the GPL1 shit
>>29063029Manuals are a meme. Modern autos kick the shit out of a slow shifting manual any day of the week. There’s a good reason they’re nearly dead in the US and it’s been fun watching the Save the Manual crowd seeth uncontrollably about it.
>>29063583Manuals are just way more fun to drive. This will always be true. Why does this primordial truth make shiftlets seethe so hard?
ratchet shifters are actually kindof fun but only if it's a v8.
>>29063378Oh I understand statistics, you just can’t let a euro poor think they have an edge in any way, you have to always remind them they are inferior
>>29063299Europeans have always prefered small cars because their countries are high density. You acknowledge they have taxes on high displacement engines and then somehow forget it in the next sentence? Why would you choose to pay higher tax when you don't already have a cultural fixation on "muh V8"Logic free subhuman knuckledragger who enjoys making long posts about things he does not know or have the capacity to understand, you must be over the age of 50.
>>29063321americans don't like cars and yet they are the only ones propping up the entire enthusiast car industry. europeans only want and shill chinese EV shit and want to ban ICE entirely.
>>29063029Do my paddle shifters count? I use those all the time
>>29063615HA
manuals are for poors and third worlderst. poor third worlder whos never seen an automagic car except taxis
>>29063683You see in America we are trusted with cars and guns, in Europe you cannot be trusted with either, extreme rules, laws and regulation for you, we are free and just do what we want
>>29063681kek
>>29063777Spoken like a clueless mutt. Oh right, almost forgot.
>but what about the americans?
>>29063615You completely missed the joke, fucking retard kek.
>>29063797Statistics are easy, like per capita when it comes to races, maybe you’re retarded and think that I missed it? What’s more important than racism is attacking europoors at this very moment
Manual is for poorfags who can't afford automatic in the rest of the world. It's not for enthusiasts
>>29063805Can't drive one, got it.
*most able to afford cars nation on earthftfy
>>29063029It's a per-capita thing. America has more enthusiasts than most other countries by virtue of having a much larger and more economically well-of population, but the vast majority of people in the US are not enthusiasts and consider cars nothing more than a utility. So we've got a lot of people who want manuals, but a vastly higher percentage of people who don't care.
>>29063099You’re a weak lanky twink
>>29063803>still doesn't get itHe was calling you an attention seeking faggot. The outlier doesn't reflect the majority, but you still felt the need to blogpost about it.
>>29063099>135lbsCan you even lift a wrench? Do you have cancer?
>>29063909It's called being a healthy weight.Yes I can lift (though obv never lifted weights), I'm pretty fit and mildly strong. I have a disease that makes my body eat itself but it's in good control. Idk how i'm so skinny, I don't do uppers even caffeine, I'm lazy as shit and sedentary. Good genes? Being neurotic and hypervigilant even when safe? Eating less than 800 cal / day? It's probably all three.
>>29063920>It's called being a healthy weight. 135lbs @5'9" puts you in weak, scrawny skellington territory. You weigh less than a healthy woman.>I'm lazy as shit and sedentaryYeah, that's pretty apparent.
>Americans love cars>Americans love DIY>Americans love the outdoors>Americans love BBQs>Americans love their backroadsSo why is rallying not a thing in US?>Pack up your pick up>find a cozy place to set up your grill>watch cars fly past at 100 miles an hour on dirt roads>help flip some guy back over after having crashed>Once the the stint is done, pack up and move to the next spotIf you describe to someone the American stereotype and describe the sport of rallying and ask that person do they think Americans would like rally he would reply>Like? Americans must love rallyingBut they don't.
>>29063932This is not skelly, it's "fit."And yes that's a only pint, not a 750mL.
>>29063904Ok? I still have to mog euros, I literally don’t care bro
>>29063904you're starting to sound mad that you don't own that many manual cars, anon.
>>29063609Yep, so much fun that they’re going extinct to where a bunch of perpetually online losers, most of which have never actually driven a manual have a group called Save the Manual. And so fun that auto makers have been making them less and less for decades and even removing them completely as an option for certain models. Oh and one of my favorites, so much fun that super and hyper cars have practically abandoned them due to how slow and outdated they are. Face it, manuals suck and the only people crying about how amazing they are are losers like yourself that are a tiny minority of people that have a contrarian opinion about a tedious, annoying way of driving a car. If they were actually fun, they’d be a lot more popular and readily available. They’re literally dying lol
>>29063949Americans love racing off road, it just wouldn't classify in """rallying""" by european standards. even then, american rally courses are very different from european ones. often being more open and wider and not as focused on driving around the tightest courses.the landscape here is just different. if you consider tarmac rally, then a lot of americans engage in rallying even if they don't officially call it that.Pikes Peak hillclimb isn't officially called "rally" but rally cars have and continue to race up there in much the say way they would an actual rally course.
>>29063029I've ridden with Yuropoor drivers and they can't drive manual worth a god damn.
>>29063029What is literally the point anymore? From the invention of the H-pattern manual until approximately 2010, a manual transmission gave you better performance, better MPG, better reliability, longer intervals between servicing, and was almost always cheaper to buy. You were rewarded for shifting your own gears and using a clutch.Since approximately 2010, excluding CVTs and known problematic units, automatics are faster, more fuel efficient, will generally last the life of the car without servicing, give you the ability to manually select gears if tracking the car and wanting to avoid mid-corner up/down shifts or to keep revs up for engine braking and to be ready to accelerate, and if a manual is available, the auto is usually cheaper. To buy a car after 2010 in manual is to do so out of sheer stubborness with an Amish-like desire to hold onto obsolete ways of doing things. While people may respect it at car shows, if you lose a race no one says "well, you had a manual, so you get all of my respect", they just throw their faggoty hand out of the window with that passive aggressive wave.I have exclusively owned manuals from my first car in 2002 and only have ever owned one automatic car as a secondary shared car with my wife that was bought in auto to be a road trip/out of town car so anyone could drive it in an emergency scenario. Most of my cars are 90's cars, so the manual variant is vastly superior, hence why they are all manuals. All of that said, I don't expect any car newer than 2010 will ever be bought with a manual by me, I just don't see the point. I only ever signed up for the clutch pedal and h-pattern for the benefits it offered, without the benefits, what's the point? Why not go even further back and only drive cars with whackadoo mechanics like a Model T if you're so die hard for "muh mechanical connection"?
>>29063805Thats not true though
>>29063988>Spends the afternoon ranting and raving about how he hates manual transmissions in at least 2 threads because the guy fucking his crush drives manual. You know... you can buy an automatic. It's a choice you already have.
>>29063969Cope.
>>29063633>Europeans have always prefered small cars because their countries are high density.>You acknowledge they have taxes on high displacement engines and then somehow forget it in the next sentence? Why are you equating the power of the engine with the size of the vehicle? You can have v8 engines in relatively small cars. The Ford Mustang is a perfect example of this. Another is The Mercedes SLK R171. This was a car made by a European company and it's small and compact but it still has a powerful V8 engine. Even in the US a lot of smaller boring commuter cars still used basic V6 engines that weren't very large up until recently. There's no reason Europeans would dislike those besides the fact that anything over a liter or 2 is heavily taxed there. Again, you can buy smaller cars with more powerful engines, that, even with an old-school slushbox automatic, would still be fast enough to overtake people on the highway. Buying a smaller car does not automatically mean you have to have a tiny engine and a manual transmission.
>>29063969Yea so little of a demand that they're literally developing fake manual larp systems for electric cars that don't even have gears.
>>29064019None of those are small cars you absolute retard
>>29063974because they aren't actively shifting their car. they drive diesels and just leave them in one gear and let the torque pull them out all day long. there is a top gear episode where they all become taxi drivers where james explains exactly this.
>>29064028How is the Mercedes SLK R171 not a small car? It's a coupe, it's barely 4 meters long...Sure, it's not a Smart ForTwo or some miniature vehicle, but it's a small car. I drive a mid-size sedan and it's 212 inches long which is about 5.3 meters. Something that's a full 3 and a half feet or 1.3 meters smaller than my car is small
>>29064013How is that a cope? Nothing about what I just said is untrue. You denying reality is the definition of coping.
>>29063988>What is literally the point anymore?cant let another man determine my shift points, might as well let someone fuck your wife honestly. btw you sound like a fag and a wrenchlet
>>29063064Other countries have women, but they still have tons of vehicles with manual transmissioms.
>>29063331>>why isnt everyone driving a v8 rwd manual bones on all corners stripped out under 800kg straight pipe plastic window carbon hood racecar like meare there even cars that you can get that qualifies as this? all that comes to mind are kit cars and custom builids
as a bong i've noticed more and more people drive auto's now and take tests in them.i'm unsure about america but here if you pass in a auto you can only drive a auto so there is still benefit to having a manual license, especially if you want to work in logistics or HGV driving since 90% of trucks and larger vehicles are still manual.it's genuinely good, manual filters the wetters who can't into clutch control and allows you to demand higher wages for work involving manual driving since it's becoming a less prevalent skill. I will say that stop start traffic in such a car is aids.
>>29063029>Its pretty interesting that America is by far the most car obsessed nation on earth and yet 90% of Americans cant drive a manual. You'd think it would be the exact oppositeIt's also pretty interesting that most people don't know how to hand signal, and have never manually cranked their car with a starting-handle
>>29063377okay, sounds like a recipe for automatics stamping out manualsespecially looking at registered new manual cars went from 80% to 30% in a decade
>>29063029we're not car obsessed, we're wealth-signaling obsessed. cars are like little houses you can drive around to show other people how much money you have and we fucking love it. especially since you can use them to threaten or kill people, we love that too
>>29064497Euro thinks driving manual is hard. I'm a burger and learned in 30 minutes.
>>29064716And I'll bet you're still shit at it
>>29064722You just prove my point.
>>29064731I don't prove anything - I just state the facts
>>29063920>Eating less than 800 cal / day?It's this.
>>29064716Congratulations, you're part of the mutt elite.
You guys are missing a big point, no one over 35 wants to shift a manual anymore, they just want to chill
>>29064716You have no idea how bad you are at driving.
>>29063029I don't want to finger my gearbox on every street sorry
>>29063029Because there's so much traffic and gridlocks, traffic lights, intersections, stop signs that most Americans consider manual transmission for daily driving as burden. Consider this with most Americans being quite lazy so its not going to be surprise that manual transmissions are rare in America. Though even at europoo countries new cars with manual transmissions are becoming less common because strict emissions limits(most of new cars are full hybrids or EV's now for this reason alone), mandatory ADAS systems make it more difficult and expensive for car manufacturers to produce cars with manual transmissions. Belt driven starter-generator mild hybrid system is more compatible with manual transmission cars than full hybrid or EV cars. But then again its strict emissions limits that makes it difficult to produce cars that cant run pure EV mode for at least few miles before the gas engine turns on.
>>29063952No its not. You look like a concentration camp victim
>>29063952>>29065973if you think he looks bad, you wouldn't fucking believe what I look like. I weigh 110.
>>29063029We have a higher percentage of manual drivers than any other first world country. Also why would this shock you? 70% of new car purchases are women and they don't give a fuck about emotion or fun. They want massaging seats, 360 camera, heated steering wheel, and being up high.Of the 30% men remaining the majority have a commute and don't want to deal with a manual transmission in stop and go.So 10% sounds pretty straightforward.Although you should probably take your own shit, freeze it, and then throw the frozen log over the counter at burger king and land it in the deep frier.
>>29064716i didnt say that though did i ?plenty of people just dont like manuals because clutch control makes them nervous which is why they take auto tests.my point is, if you want any kind of job using machinery you should learn to drive manuals.
>>29065945this.. but it honestly depends on where you live/commute.I daily a 2010 with a MT, and live out in the woods, near a small town -- driving out here on country roads, or in my little 10k population town with the MT is awesome.going up the freeway a bit into eugene (nearest decent sized 'city'), and the rush hour gridlock is absolutely unbearable. would be an off topic rant, but how / why do people choose to live like that? 30 minutes of stop and go every work day, twice a day... hell on earth.the majority of americans at this point live in that kind of situation, commuting to a job and enduring bumper to bumper traffic, yeah i get not wanting a MT.
>>29064716You didn't learn it in 30 minutes. That's like saying you learned guitar in 30 minutes because you can play a few chords so it's not that hard.
>>29063920>being so mentally ill that you believe starving daily is healthyYou weigh less than most women. You probably can't even bench the barbell.
>>29069487I’m aware I weigh less than most women. Here’s the thing, everyone is overweight now. You grow up around massive hambeasts and start to think it’s normal.Next thing you know being obese is so common that actual normal sized humans start to look twinky and out of place.Doesn’t mean that being a hamplanet dad bod is good for you. Those guys who bulked when I was in uni? Just 15 years later most have already turned into fat ugly bastards, you have to keep it up once you’ve built it.
>>29069474I think that's fair, if you're coordinated you can learn four chords and just play rhythm in that time, and I bet you can learn how to drive stick well enough to get from your house to the grocery store and back in that time.
>>29063335>>29063303>>29063315>>29063172Autos are SO FANCY.Driving a manual is only cool if girls do it.

I'm an absolute noob here with standards, though I enjoy dropping gear in auto sport mode; am I supposed to hover over clutch and brake, shift to neutral, turn over engine, depress the clutch but lift it about three inches to let it catch on first? And then second gear upshift is a little higher but I need to rev match with throttle like half an inch of gas pedal? I'm entirely confused on how the hell to brake from 75 mph. Do I have to press brake before engine braking down, I'm assuming without skipping gears?
