Its pretty interesting that America is by far the most car obsessed nation on earth and yet 90% of Americans cant drive a manual. You'd think it would be the exact opposite

They just had a head start on the adoption of automatics. Most people get nothing out of driving manual. America might be "car obsessed" but the majority of people aren't car enthusiasts. Even the majority of people who buy expensive cars aren't car enthusiasts, it's just an image thing.

Japan is the same way as the USA. Preference for Automatic vs Manual/standard transmission is entirely an income issue. The reason why Manual transmissions are more popular in Europe, Asia, and South America (and Africa) is because those places are poorer and people would rather save $500 or $1000 on a car by getting a manual instead of an automatic.

It's the same reason why Automatics are normal and commonplace in the Arab world, because people in the gulf nations with enough money to buy a car just get an auto cause it's easier to drive.

Also for what it's worth, Americans are not "car obsessed". The auto industry built the middle class, and the USA is a huge country. Owning a car just makes sense here which is why they became popular in the 1920s.

Automatic transmissions work fine, and with enough power there's no benefit to a manual. That's why as soon as V8s became common and normal in the 1950s, the automatic transmission also took over.

Besides poverty, the other main reason Manuals are popular in Europe is because of engine size. They tax you more on the size of the engine. If your car has less than 100hp...yeah you're gonna need to be able to shift. But when you have over 150 or 200hp then that really isn't necessary
>>
>>29063039
Who gives a shit, dogfucker?
>>
>>29063172
In the US manuals are usually more expensive in terms of what people actually pay. They used to be cheaper, but that has not been the case in my 22 years of driving in the US.
>>
>>29063172
>Automatic transmissions work fine, and with enough power there's no benefit to a manual.
Here's the thing. Even if an automatic is faster by 0.2 seconds, I'm only going to redline the manual. Most auto drivers NEVER redline. I redline every goddamn day.
It's the difference between saying "C&D went 6.2 sec in this bad boy" to doing it every day on your commute.
>>
>>29063172
>>
>>29063177
Manuals hold value better because enthusiasts prefer them.
>>
>>29063195
Yep.
Not only is a manual more fun and more likely to get you to actually wind out the car, but you get to thrash the coolest cars and sell them for over what you paid for them.
And there's the whole weight shift control thing about *how* you slip the clutch that you can use to induce oversteer or brake faster. Can't do that in an auto.
>>
>>29063039
Nobody asked, faggot
>>
>>29063193
Now do it by income and compare the taxes. Having a median or mean wealth of over $100,000 means nothing if most of that is your home and then you have to pay like 50k or more per year in taxes. Again, in European countries you have to pay more in taxes to register your care based on the displacement of the engine. That's why in America a 4.6 liter v8 was consider a bare bones standard workhorse engine for plebians and government officials but in Europe that size of engine, regardless of the power it makes, is considered something incredibly luxurious and extravagant.

I'm sorry but you're not going to convince me that Europeans are rich but they just buy cars with 1.5 liter engines and 5 speed manual transmissions for enjoyment purposes. If that were true, they'd just pony up and pay the taxes to drive more powerful vehicles.

>>29063177
>In the US manuals are usually more expensive in terms of what people actually pay
>>29063195
>Manuals hold value better because enthusiasts prefer them.

Sure but that's a modern phenomenon only because automatics became the overwhelming majority of cars by the 1980s or 1990s. And a lot of it is because the only cars you can even option a manual transmission are performance cars or fun cars.

No one is paying more for a 2007 Ford Focus with a manual transmission than an automatic transmission. They will pay more for a later model Focus ST. But for basic economy cars the manuals were cheaper at the time when they were sold.

Buying a brand new Dodge Neon in 1999 with a manual transmission was a choice you made to save money, not to have fun.
>>
>>29063029
It's exactly because it's a car REQUIRED nation that manuals are so rare. If you don't drive, you are basically condemned to be stuck at the bottom of society here. So we bought the beige or grey automatic cuckover in droves.
>>
>>29063029

And so fun that auto makers have been making them less and less for decades and even removing them completely as an option for certain models. Oh and one of my favorites, so much fun that super and hyper cars have practically abandoned them due to how slow and outdated they are.

Face it, manuals suck and the only people crying about how amazing they are are losers like yourself that are a tiny minority of people that have a contrarian opinion about a tedious, annoying way of driving a car. If they were actually fun, they’d be a lot more popular and readily available. They’re literally dying lol
>>
>>29063949
Americans love racing off road, it just wouldn't classify in """rallying""" by european standards. even then, american rally courses are very different from european ones. often being more open and wider and not as focused on driving around the tightest courses.

the landscape here is just different. if you consider tarmac rally, then a lot of americans engage in rallying even if they don't officially call it that.

Pikes Peak hillclimb isn't officially called "rally" but rally cars have and continue to race up there in much the say way they would an actual rally course.
>>
>>29063029
I've ridden with Yuropoor drivers and they can't drive manual worth a god damn.
>>
>>29063029
What is literally the point anymore?

From the invention of the H-pattern manual until approximately 2010, a manual transmission gave you better performance, better MPG, better reliability, longer intervals between servicing, and was almost always cheaper to buy. You were rewarded for shifting your own gears and using a clutch.

Since approximately 2010, excluding CVTs and known problematic units, automatics are faster, more fuel efficient, will generally last the life of the car without servicing, give you the ability to manually select gears if tracking the car and wanting to avoid mid-corner up/down shifts or to keep revs up for engine braking and to be ready to accelerate, and if a manual is available, the auto is usually cheaper.

To buy a car after 2010 in manual is to do so out of sheer stubborness with an Amish-like desire to hold onto obsolete ways of doing things. While people may respect it at car shows, if you lose a race no one says "well, you had a manual, so you get all of my respect", they just throw their faggoty hand out of the window with that passive aggressive wave.

I have exclusively owned manuals from my first car in 2002 and only have ever owned one automatic car as a secondary shared car with my wife that was bought in auto to be a road trip/out of town car so anyone could drive it in an emergency scenario. Most of my cars are 90's cars, so the manual variant is vastly superior, hence why they are all manuals. All of that said, I don't expect any car newer than 2010 will ever be bought with a manual by me, I just don't see the point. I only ever signed up for the clutch pedal and h-pattern for the benefits it offered, without the benefits, what's the point? Why not go even further back and only drive cars with whackadoo mechanics like a Model T if you're so die hard for "muh mechanical connection"?

>Europeans have always prefered small cars because their countries are high density.
>You acknowledge they have taxes on high displacement engines and then somehow forget it in the next sentence?

Why are you equating the power of the engine with the size of the vehicle? You can have v8 engines in relatively small cars. The Ford Mustang is a perfect example of this.

Another is The Mercedes SLK R171. This was a car made by a European company and it's small and compact but it still has a powerful V8 engine.

Even in the US a lot of smaller boring commuter cars still used basic V6 engines that weren't very large up until recently. There's no reason Europeans would dislike those besides the fact that anything over a liter or 2 is heavily taxed there.

Again, you can buy smaller cars with more powerful engines, that, even with an old-school slushbox automatic, would still be fast enough to overtake people on the highway. Buying a smaller car does not automatically mean you have to have a tiny engine and a manual transmission.
>>
>>29063969

Sure, it's not a Smart ForTwo or some miniature vehicle, but it's a small car.

as a bong i've noticed more and more people drive auto's now and take tests in them.
i'm unsure about america but here if you pass in a auto you can only drive a auto so there is still benefit to having a manual license, especially if you want to work in logistics or HGV driving since 90% of trucks and larger vehicles are still manual.
it's genuinely good, manual filters the wetters who can't into clutch control and allows you to demand higher wages for work involving manual driving since it's becoming a less prevalent skill.
I will say that stop start traffic in such a car is aids.

Because there's so much traffic and gridlocks, traffic lights, intersections, stop signs that most Americans consider manual transmission for daily driving as burden. Consider this with most Americans being quite lazy so its not going to be surprise that manual transmissions are rare in America.

Though even at europoo countries new cars with manual transmissions are becoming less common because strict emissions limits(most of new cars are full hybrids or EV's now for this reason alone), mandatory ADAS systems make it more difficult and expensive for car manufacturers to produce cars with manual transmissions. Belt driven starter-generator mild hybrid system is more compatible with manual transmission cars than full hybrid or EV cars. But then again its strict emissions limits that makes it difficult to produce cars that cant run pure EV mode for at least few miles before the gas engine turns on.

Also why would this shock you? 70% of new car purchases are women and they don't give a fuck about emotion or fun. They want massaging seats, 360 camera, heated steering wheel, and being up high.

Of the 30% men remaining the majority have a commute and don't want to deal with a manual transmission in stop and go.

So 10% sounds pretty straightforward.
Although you should probably take your own shit, freeze it, and then throw the frozen log over the counter at burger king and land it in the deep frier.
>>
>>29064716
i didnt say that though did i ?
plenty of people just dont like manuals because clutch control makes them nervous which is why they take auto tests.
my point is, if you want any kind of job using machinery you should learn to drive manuals.
>>
>>29065945
this.. but it honestly depends on where you live/commute.
I daily a 2010 with a MT, and live out in the woods, near a small town -- driving out here on country roads, or in my little 10k population town with the MT is awesome.
going up the freeway a bit into eugene (nearest decent sized 'city'), and the rush hour gridlock is absolutely unbearable. would be an off topic rant, but how / why do people choose to live like that? 30 minutes of stop and go every work day, twice a day... hell on earth.

the majority of americans at this point live in that kind of situation, commuting to a job and enduring bumper to bumper traffic, yeah i get not wanting a MT.

I'm an absolute noob here with standards, though I enjoy dropping gear in auto sport mode; am I supposed to hover over clutch and brake, shift to neutral, turn over engine, depress the clutch but lift it about three inches to let it catch on first? And then second gear upshift is a little higher but I need to rev match with throttle like half an inch of gas pedal?

I'm entirely confused on how the hell to brake from 75 mph. Do I have to press brake before engine braking down, I'm assuming without skipping gears?
