I bought it brand new back in 2005, freakin loved every minute of owning it, and that was keeping it bone stock for my entire ownership experience. Sadly, I sold the car to help fund a down payment on a house in the early 2010s. Life happened, I had a few kids, and owning a coupe just wasn’t in the cards for me again until very recently. I decided I wanted another Type S, preferably stock like the one I had. And holy shit, have things become grim…Literally every RSX, regardless of trim is a ratted out, 20 owner project car with a fucking salvage title now. The best one I was able to find in my area had about 3 owners and 50k miles in, but was extensively modded. I decided to maybe look at other similar options like Civic SIs, or even RWD couples like 370Zs and GT86s. It’s just as bad. Nearly every single example I was looking at was a fucking eBay\Temu parts bin, barely running mess. Not to mention the vehicle history alone makes me feel like these cars deserve to be in a fucking crusher rather than in someone’s driveway. The common denominator seems to be lower income people getting their hands on them, throwing cheap, shitty mods and tunes at them, and then of course never maintaining them. There is literally no worse thing for the longevity of cars than poor car enthusiasts.

If you want alternatives, then of course the Solstice and Escort ZX2 are the other cheap ones (ZX2s may be had for sub $3k). Lastly, if you do want something Japanese, then Miata is still the champion, followed by the Del Slow, but you really need to bargain hunt for one (if you are lucky, you will find one under $7k in decent condition).

Before, these cars would've bottomed out to where you could snag a Civic or even a 240SX for ~$1500 and drive it home, but now the cars are being ruined before they even depreciate to that degree. I'd like to wager that this is due to longer-length loans meaning that lower income people are ruining cars before they even have a chance to depreciate now, because your average ricelet normie definitely can't afford a brand new car (and hell, just look at how many sites are financing things like coilovers and wheels now).
