>>29066704Some are 30k. Some are 45k some are lifetime.Remember, changing ATF isn't as easy as drain and fill. You need to bring up your trans to a specific temp and add more ATF until it starts leaking out of the check hole.This is where many fuck up and then blame new fluid on slippage.

ATF can be fully changed by unhooking the inlet to the heat exchanger inside the radiator and routing it with some clear hose down to a jug marked with lines every quart. Start the engine and use the internal pump inside the transmission to send old fluid into the jug, turn the car off every two quarts and gravity feed/pump fresh fluid into the heat exchanger through the port you unhooked. When the fresh fluid shows up in the drain hose you are done. THEN you do the temp-specific level check. Mine actually shifts better for me with an extra 1/3 quart over full, fwiw.

Transmissions are only exposed to a little bit of air + humidity when they thermal cycle, rather than with every other stroke of a piston like oil is. The fluid isn't hygroscopic either, so age is pretty much a non-issue. Heat is what kills ATF.

If you're worried about natural degradation of the oil when you put less than 30k on it, change it every 10 years for peace of mind. But if you've been naughty and never changed it, don't do it. in my car community people do drain and fills. all our cars are 100-400k miles and most of em did 120 140k+ before their first drain and fills because volvo says theyre lifetime fluid so no1 changes except enthusiasts. supposedly the drain and fill is the best chance of success. a flush usually kills the trans within 500 miles. i did the drain and fill at 140k and it raised my revs at startup, nothing else to share. i put probably 800-1k miles on it and was going to do another one. i guess my trans survived but im not sure if it had a significant negative effect. i guess ill find out in a few thousand miles.

Flushing hooks in a machine that pumps fluid through all the passages at a higher rate than normal operation, which can dislodge particles and debris that wasn't causing problems before, but is now stuck in a place where it interferes with something that moves. A full swap using the transmission's own pump doesn't do that.As far as a pan drain & refill, my transmission hold 13 quarts of fluid, and draining the pan lets out 3. The rest stays in the torque converter, valve body and internal passages. Repeatedly draining and filling just the pan to swap fluid is a waste of good fluid and will never remove all the old fluid or its contaminants and worn-out chemical compounds.
