I'm freaking out because of the forced EV adoption. I like EVs in principle, but the battery tech is not there yet so the current engineering solutions are atrocius, a huge time bomb underneath the vehicle making the whole thing cumbersome. Why not simply wait for battery tech to catch up. Why do it NOW?
>>29067082>Why not simply wait for battery tech to catch up. Why do it NOW?gaynigger capitalism doesn't work like that. industry won't invest in battery R&D unless there's immediate competition pressure.
They literally just want people to buy new cars. We live under capitalism and there's money to be made.Nothing will ever be too much.
>>29067082American automakers sabotaged their earlier electric car concepts (GM EV-1, I'm serious, look this up) and thus has to be forced to attempt to prevent competition from eating their lunch. We already have cheapish Hyundais getting 250+miles per charge. And you can charge it while you're parked at work or home, remember, it's not like going to a gas station. The technology is here now. It wasn't here 15 years ago when shit boxes like the Leaf were being sold, but those were a necessary evolutionary step.
>>29067133The point is that the engineering with the huge battery modules is garbage, battery tech needs to improve a lot more before EVs should compete or even could compete against ICE modularity and easy DIY design.
>>29067133>American automakers sabotaged their earlier electric car concepts (GM EV-1, I'm serious, look this up) and thus has to be forced to attempt to prevent competition from eating their lunch. If this had not been the case, do you think battery tech would be ahead?
>>29067167Impossible to say, it could be that we've hit a brick wall with energy density of lithium in the past couple years. Public opinion on them might be less retarded. >>29067161Batteries, motors, and controllers are pretty modular already, the thing is that they don't want Joe Retard fucking around with high voltage.
>>29067172Controllers and motors absolutely, but batteries? I mean maybe In not aware of it but don't virtually all EVs have a huge battery pack under the chasis that's really hard to access on your own and fiddle with it? I know it's multiple battery modules interconnected but it's a dealership level.job.
>>29067082The government does not want you owning a vehicle. Imagine you decided that those in charge shouldn't be able to rape your children and you decided to do something about it like drive through the synagogue? EVs are their solution to this problem. This is why they are forced on you along with smaller engines, which will be banned in time.
>>29067082there's much better battery tech but adoption is extremely comically slow because >muh ROIsthere's a couple companies in DC and a dozen chinese companies rushing to get production to scale but because this shit is competing with existing, government-backed (both china and us) companies it's not in their best interest that these companies ramp up quicklyit's fucking retardedthese batteries charge 5-15% faster and have 80-100% higher capacities but WE CAN'T ROCK THE BOAT THINK OF THE INVESTORS
>>29067082>forced EV adoptionLeave commiefornia then. Every manufacturer is backpedaling on EVs because they only sell to EV fans and the average driver just wants affordable gas cars
>Why not simply wait for battery tech to catch up.How are EVs going to develop if nobody buys them? Just look at FCEV. Twenty years ago they looked like the future but with no real adoption the tech stagnated and now they're completely sidelined by BEV. The real enforcement will only come in 2035, before that it's only a question of money.
>>29067281The numbers in the developed countries tell a different story. Might have something to do with gas becoming increasingly less affordable.
>>29067082Cause the benefits of switching everyone to EVs completely outweighs the negatives. Switching everyone as fast as possible will have a significant positive effect.
>>29067082You don't even know how fast cars will disappear from urban centers, the thing most people don't realize yet is how much more life changing electric personal mobility is going to take over cars. Why drive when there's ebikes, escooters, emotos, or onewheels? The use case for cars outside of interurban travel is going to be shunned upon at the social level. There's a massive generational shift happening with the kids turning into adults, they don't drive and they like living in the city. The rising costs of living in the city is pushing the less than desirable into the suburbs, making the modern suburb the new ghetto.
>>29067281>leave CaliforniaImagine completely lowering your quality of life over wanting to use interioir technology.
>>29067082They need all the gas for war.
>>29067082I advise you to rent an EV for a few weeks and try driving it around town and on the long trips. You may change your opinion about their perceived inconvenience the same way I did after buying a used EV for peanuts
>>29067281They need all the fuel for war.
>>29067253>these batteries charge 5-15% faster and have 80-100% higher capacities but WE CAN'T ROCK THE BOAT THINK OF THE INVESTORSInteresting.
>>29067414That's completely different than looking at it as a long term investment. I told you I like EVs but hauling a battery train that is severely damaged and causes a headache for you and your insurence if someone fender benders it a bit hard is not roadworthy. My point is when batteries get more compact, modular and DIY friendly then EVs can be unleashed.
>>29067227You don't just fiddle with a car battery pack without a moderate chance of ending up in a pajeet video compilation. It's not like changing spark plugs
>>29067438it's fucking frustrating is what it iscurrent orders are paid for up to 2030 (THATS FOUR YEARS FROM NOW) at the earliest, so you literally CAN'T get these batteries produced (hell, even set up the factories for them) until then or you'll get either sued into bankruptcy or, arguably worse for companies, blacklistedwe live in a clown world anon. the science for 700mi-1000mi range EVs exists but you're not allowed to have it because muh investors
>>29067455I know, I worked with high V as I'm a trained EE but it can and could be done with proper procedures and the battery capacity improving like 200%.
>>29067172car batteries are as modular as phone batteries. which is to say, not at all. you will basically be 100% reliant on the generosity of some literally who chinese company to keep making batteries for your shitbox once OEM deems it obsolete and stops making parts for it. and of course it will be as difficult to replace as possible when you do find a replacement so that you give up and buy a new car instead. consequence of capitalism
>>29067453>more DIY friendlyGiven how locked down combustion cars are becoming, you shouldn't your hopes up.
>>29067242Just wait for the day when there will be more Datacenters at your area, then you will be paying more expensive electric and water bills. The price for charging EV becomes more expensive, parhaps your state or electric company might also occasionally tell you to conserve your electric consumption.>>29067493I really hope that someday there will be a group of car enthusiasts who are also high skilled computer hackers. It would be nice thing if hackers would crack open OEM firmware/software, coding from cars computer system that are needed for actually driving the car. Then copy all of it and then use all of it to build up new privacy, security(against car thefts) focused Linux based OS(fake it to look like OEM for periodic car safety checks so inspector wont see difference) that would then fully replace the CAR OEM firmware/software.
>>29067710Get solar panels before it's too late. Or run a diesel generator to charge it, it's still going to be more efficient than a combustion engine.
A lot of the replies in this thread prove that moderniggers can't do anything right and we're all doomed (or we've got some seriously powerful trolling ops)
>>29067082>Why do it NOW?Agenda 2030. They're trying to speedrun the "you vill own nothing" part, because they only have 3.25 years to do it in.
Let’s trade like humans. You want EV self driving? Legalize real natural heroin and morphine no tax, let ppl grow it themselves, same with weed. You know, if we don’t need to drive, what’s the fucking point in being sober? We square?
>>29067253>AI said it can hold even more electricity!wow let's get this stuff on the market stat
>>29067082I like EV's. When I'm in an EV I feel futuristic and special.if they weren't safe they wouldn't let us have them so you don't have to worry about that
>>29068058>I like piece of shit's. When I'm in an piece of shit I feel futuristic and special.>specialSpecial Ed
>>29067715>Or run a diesel generator to charge it, it's still going to be more efficient than a combustion engine.Hmmm that sounds interesting.
>>29068055this is required for papers backed by companies now. you have to shove ai in somehow so investors are happy.notice how they said "AI-assisted framework"they're talking about matlab.
>>29067161>ICE modularity and easy DIY design.bmw timing chain
>>29067253lifepo is everywhere and exotic salt batteries only arent because they are as heavy as lead-acid (but they are making headway for infra use rather htan in EVs and personal devices)
>>29069251Silicon-carbide exists
I do wonder, even if batteries jump in a 400% capacity increase for the current size due to a revolution, will they just use the same engineering/design or will they make a smaller more modular design.
>>29067455The problem with a battery is, that on a basic level it is always on.You can safely work on high voltage systems with the main contactor turned off, but this is impossible in a battery. But there are specialized, Independent workshops emerging that tackle EB drivetrain issues without the retarded "replace everything at maximum cost" that stealerships like to do (in EVs as well as ICEs).
>>29069592It won't get much more modular than cylindrical cells. These can be exchanged on a cell by cell level.Prismatic cells are more integrated and more costly to replace. The hierarchy is:Cylindrical>prismatic>pouch crlls
EVs will never take off because you can't go 1000 miles on a single charge.
>>29069633Should have typed more DIY accessible
>>29067094Capitalism is the only system where private vehicle ownership could conceivably exist on a mass scale.
>>29069736I think he meant fiat money print more no deflation modern "capitalism".
>>29069720Range is going to be vital if you people really want a 100% EV adoption rate. The reality is the vast majority of people wouldn't be able to charge at home. So were going to need EV's that can sit on the street for weeks at a time and take people to work and back without being charged. That or we need ~500 mile range EV's that can be charged in under 3 minutes like refueling a ICE car. Neither are happening anytime soon.
>>29068217I'm surprised you can solve a captcha
>>29069743This fully this. You should be able to drive over 500 miles per day
>>29069739>fiat money print more no deflation modern "capitalism".Yeah "capitalism" has been dead in the US for ages. If it wasn't 1934, or if it wasn't 1973, or if it wasn't the ~2009 bailout, it was the COVID money print. Modern money is completely meaningless.
>>29069787>EVfag can't perform basic mathMany such cases.
>>29069764I'm surprised you still have a colon after how hard it's working 24/7
>>29069743Who needs a 100% adoption rate? There will always be fringe use cases for ICE vehicles and legacy cars. But for the big majority of cars it's doable.
>>29069838Wow you did it again!
Every EV thread boils down to >TWO MORE WEEKS
>>29069743FCEV exist but nobody wants them.
>>29069932>Who needs a 100% adoption rate? All I hear is how ICE's are supposed to be banned 5 years from now. Are those people supposed to just abandon their vehicles and take the bus? That might fly in Europe but it won't fly in the free world. >>29070039No fucking shit nobody wants them. Is running your vehicle on propane not enough of a pain in the ass? Well great news! You can now make that 10x worse by running your vehicle on hydrogen!
>>29069935Scroll up pussy
>>29070051ICEs aren't supposed to be banned. New sales of fossil fuel cars are banned after 2035. You are allowed to get combustion engine cars intended for alternative, carbon-free fuels like hydrogen after that.
>>29067085Um, people are SCRAMBLING to improve battery tech. Everything you use nowadays has a battery in it: laptop, phones, cars, power tools, anything used at a camp site, an increasing number of vehicles, etc. and everyone wants to outcompete with longer battery life. The simple truth is the best anyone has come up with is various Lithium Ion batteries. Everything else is either too unstable, too expensive to manufacture, or has some other drawback to it.
>>29070056>ICE aren’t supposed to be banned>We just want you to be banned from buying oneRiveting stuff.
>>29070051>All I hear is how ICE's are supposed to be banned 5 years from now.Not exactly banned. But politics is retarded as always. Yes, EVs are a good idea and work well, but there is no reason to ban (or phase-out, or whatever) ICE cars at all. If there comes a time when ICEs become a niche product, so be it.Why do faggots on the left and the right always believe, that every good idea must be made a general law?
>>29070056Ah yes, hydrogen, the official fuel of the phrase "oh, the humanity!"
>>29070068That's not what the law says. Only specific types of ICE will no longer be available for new registrations. It's not a blanket ban on everything with internal combustion engines. Not really that different from previous restrictions no engines.
>>29070079The Hindenburg shows how safe hydrogen really is. Only a third of the people on board died while the rest could escape after the airship gently sank down while burning. It also wasn't used as a fuel but as a lifting gas, the propulsion came from diesel engines.
>>29070066We're seeing the first EV with sodium ion batteries.
>>29070113Yeah because the Hindenburg at 0 psi is the same as a tank of hydrogen at 10,000psi+. At those pressures you don't even need a fire explosion for carnage to ensue.
>>29070124700bar is getting uncommon. 350bar has won.
>>29070113Hindenburg had hydrogen because America wouldn't export helium. Coating your diesel powered aircraft with aluminum and iron oxide and earthing it during a thunderstorm is asking for trouble.
>>29070113>>29070079you know they kept using hydrogen after this, right? its like saying boats are shit because the titanic, when the titanic was a fucking disaster for a bunch of EXTREMELY preventable reasons.
>>29070196Airships as a mode of travel practically died overnight. Even the American helium filled ships couldn't regain public trust. Ships were seen as an irreplaceable necessity but airships were simply a matter of comfort and prestige and aeroplanes were ready to take over the transatlantic flights.
>>29070056Synthetic fuels are sadly less efficient than batteries, for now. (Taking in all the economy)
>>29070212Hydrogen isn't synthetic, you can generate it from natural gas (grey hydrogen). Nothing is ever going to be as efficient as batteries.
>>29070217I know, I was going on a slight tangent about synthetic fuels.
>>29070244Most synthfuels are out because they still containing carbon, same for Brazil style ethanol. Ammonia might be an option but that's just begging to get banned over NOx emissions.
>>29070299Here I was hoping that CHOO2 would hit the market soon
What I want>500 mile range on one charge>0-90% in 10-15 minutes on a fast charging station>battery back small enough that is can fit entirely under the back seats, like a fuel tank, so that the floor and the roof don't need to be raised>cell material that doesn't catch fire and burn for a week after puncturing the battery pack
>>29070333Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles should cover that.
>>29067133Unless we build more nuclear plants, the electric grid can't sustain millions of electric vehicles charging. I agree with you, on a individual level you can buy an electric to commute if your workplace has a charger, you will end up saving money because EVs require less maintenance and they don't use gas. In some places you can even charge them fore free. But you can't extrapolate that to everyone charging their cars at night.
>>29067082EVs are fine I love my Tesla
>>29067082>but the battery tech is not there yet so the current engineering solutions are atrocius, a huge time bomb underneath the vehicle making the whole thing cumbersomethe 2010s called and want their memes back, lil bro
1) pearl clutching about the environment2) BIG heckin' green energy subsidies and fraud
>>29067082You do realize if they invent better batteries in the future, you can just swap out the old battery for a new one, right?
>>29070333BMW got you covered. Even the CLA is not far off.
The electric driveline is simply superior. A 300hp EV is cheaper to buy, to drive, to service, to insure and less likely to need repairs than the equivalent 300hp ICE car. The amount of performance you can get with EV is astounding. Sure the weight brings some of that sensation down but modern EVs are surprisingly smart at disguising the weight. I look forward to the Porsche Cayman. Will supposedly be of same weight as the ICE Cayman. Could be a game changer for electrical coupes.
>>29072201>to the Porsche Cayman*electric Porsche Cayman
>>29067082434 mile EVs are already here. 700 mile EREVs (gas powered EVs (lol)) are being released over the next 12 months. Also the Miata still exists. So fuck you
>>29072225>2 more weeks dude haha like for real dude just two more weeks haha
>>29072240>old man still stuck in 2019Six years is not much in fossil fuel years but for EVs, the past years have resulted in significant improvements. We're now getting EVs with all the benefits of ICE cars and none of its disadvantages. It's no longer shocking for a car to gave 300 mile range, we're now talking about 500 mile cars pushing out 300hp
>>29072190Any EVs that have easy to access battery modules?
