Do you actually torque everything to spec?
>>
Probably more than absolutely necessary.
>>
No. Anything valve cover bolts or more important, yes. I don’t even check wheels, hand tight, drive 15 min, hand check again.
>>
>>29067881
Pretty much this. Only important stuff with a gasket or bearings, and even then last water pump I did was fucking impossible to get tools in so I just gave it the ol’ good’n’tite.
>>
>>29067878
Depends. Is is part of or attached to the engine? Yes. Fairings and whatnot? No.
>>
>>29067878
I tighten everything to German torque spec.
>>
I would like to have my coffee first before I talk to you.
>>
it depends, you get an autistic feeling at some point where you know what's important to torque and what isn't. and you eventually learn by feel what certain torque specs feel like. and sometimes there's just not a good way to sneak a torque wrench in. blame shitty engineers for building shit without repair in mind.
>>
>>29067911
You can’t talk to someone without getting high?
Pathetic.
>>
>>29067878
I have autism, adhd, ocd, and schizophrenia, of course I fucking torque everything down to spec with a calibrated digital torque wrench, I don't play around and if the service manual doesn't have a written torque spec, I go by bolt grade rating torque spec.
>>
>>29067928
I’ve been diagnosed with autism(in the 90s when that was rare), OCD, ADHD, major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenic, psychosis, anxiety, sociopathy, and antisocial personality disorder.
I’m just a normal dude sad that life wasn’t what I imagined it to be. Diagnoses are mostly bullshit, don’t pin yourself into a corner and pretend you have to act out some exaggerated disorder. You got this, dawg. There’s a whole industry that profits off of telling people they have fake problems. Fuck that industry.
>>
>>29067878
Yeah I like hearing the *tick*
>>
>>29067933
I use those beam ones with a gauge you measure. I’ve actually never used one where you set it and it clicks after. I’m somewhat jelly, but I’m only a hobbyist.
>>
>>29067878
Very rarely. I abuse the fuck out of my cheap ass torque wrenches so they can't be fully trusted. I prefer going by feel and using common sense. Also keep in mind a torque spec is irrelevant if it's wrong.
>>
Of course I do, because I love my shit. Yeah I can and have done torque specs by hand but for my shit. I always do it. Cuz its that good shit that deserves that extra 1% of effort
>>
>>29067937
i've got a beam one that clicks. very accurate and you really have to go out of your way to throw off its calibration

Most of the time I do, I've been wrenching so long that I just feel how hard it was to break the bolt and tighten it back to however tight that felt. I do calibrate my torque wrenches every couple years.

I build aircraft for a living, of course I use a torque wrench.
>>
Wrenchlet here, do I just google torque numbers and trust those or is there a definitive source for it?
>>
>>29068008
Look up a factory service manual.
>>
>>29067878
No I work on aircraft and don't even do it there
>>
>>29067878
I bought a fucking expensive digital torque wrench so I'm gonna use that sumbitch everywhere
>>
>>29068052
I like how mine beeps and lights up
>>
>>29068075
>bing bing wahoo!
shitposting aside it'd be very useful when you're tightening up a bolt blind or in a noisy environment. i don't like that it'd need batteries though.
>>
>>29068052
>>29068075
I want one of the ones that can measure torque plus x degrees, even if I'd basically never use it
>>
>>29068007
What is it like building a jetliner? How streamlined is the process?
I've been working on helicopter overhaul/refurbs which doesn't seem that far removed from building a new one from scratch, but it's a very labour intensive process disassembling and then reassembling all the components

>Do you actually torque everything to spec?
Something that people forget is the DIAGNOSTIC BENEFIT of torquing everything to spec. Therefore, if anything ever becomes loose in the future, you know that there might be a different underlying problem causing that properly torqued item to become loose.
>>
>>29068132
>pic
i feel like the btake bleeder kit could be skipped. makes it convenient, but a gravity bleed combined with some pedal pumping also works well.
smol bottle of nail polish is unironically great for quickly painting exposed metal. cheap, dries in just a few mins and the coat is pretty tough.
>>
>>29067878
I just keep tightening until the heads shear off usually.
>>

No I just tighten everything to the point that it stops turning
>>
No. As a matter of fact, I have never touched a wrench in my life
>>
>>29067928
>>29067931
>i have been diagnosed with a, b, c, d, e, f, g and h
>that is totally relevant to the op btw
kek maybe leddit is more your way if you guys looking for a safe space
>>
>>29067881
Big benzes that call for 105-130 lbft of torque do actually need it. A smaller breaker bar or wrench might be unweildy at reaching those numbers.
>>
>>29067878
>>29067880
Pretty much this

Anything that has a gasket, drivetrain and suspension.
>>
>>29067931
Doctor here and some of the pressure is people constantly come to you with problems asking whats wrong and how to help. So you are expected to put a label on it to start a treatment pathway. It takes more experience to be bold and say someone is normal and suck it up and deal with life. You also can sound like an asshole telling someone to just deal with it. And every new patient is a stranger you just met with literally zero vetting and could straight up shank you or shoot you. It happens somewhat often. So the easy thing to do is to give people what they want. Not always as a pill pusher. But give a diagnosis. Recommend something. They need to leave your office with something. Ergo picrelated bullshit diagnosis of bullshit diagnoses.
>>
>>29068332
Also yes fuck this industry. It sucks for some patients. It also hollows out hardworking motivated and helpful and empathic people and pushes them to work past their limits to burnout suicide etc.
I cannot even wrench anymore. I do not have time. I do not have time to fold my goddamn laundry. I am reachable by my job 24/7/365.
>>
>>29067878
Not everything just anything inside the engine (and timing), suspension and wheel related etc
Don't even need to do wheel lugs but do anyway because its an excuse to hear the clicks
>>
How do manufacturers/engineers determine the appropriate amount of torque for a given bolt

grug no need tork wrench
grug stronk, grug big stronk
grug make big ugga duggas until bolt not move
>>
>>29068007
as an yuropoor, how do I get into building aircraft?
>>
>>29068716
grug not even need be strong
>>
>>29067881

Wheel nut torque is significantly more important than the valve covers.

However i have only ever used a trque wrench on head bolts.
>>
>>29068121
Likely the same shit.
just the parts I get are 100% new.
No removing anything

>>29068717
Does Europe even build anything?
Idk senpai, that place is basically DOA from our prospective.
I make $62hr, that's enough to feed like 10 euro families.
>>
>>29067878
yes, I know "handtite" is enough for 90% of cases but I do it mostly because ill be constantly thinking "was it tight enough? it might come lose" and that voice will be constantly telling me to just go and tighten it more and then I overdo it and break it
So I just torque to spec and I know im done with it
>>
>>29068717
Move to a place that actually makes stuff and doesn't just write bullshit legislation.
>>
>>29067878
Only wheel lugs. everything else i just tighten
>>
>>29068238
It's not hard to hit 120ftlbs with a normal 1/2 drive bar. The lug nuts on my truck spec at 140ftlbs, I had always just used a 24in breaker bar to do them hand tight, decided to put a torque tester on to check, it read 187ftlbs at the point where rotation began again. I have since started using a torque stick when installing to avoid the extreme overtightening I was doing. 100-120ftlbs is something you can do with a 3/8 drive ratchet and a normal socket. Be careful. It's far easier to overtighten than you'd think.
>>
>>29068717
Desult just sold a bunch of Rafeals try France
>>
FT setting motherfucker.
>>
>>29069148
what's FT?
>>
>>29067878
No they just made the numbers up
>>
>>29068801
>Likely the same shit.
>just the parts I get are 100% new.
>No removing anything
I see
The process is a little hodge-podge here. It's a 50 year old type and we're the only company still operating significant numbers of them; we just go off the manual/experience
Are you an qualified aircraft mechanic or is it a different pathway?
>>
>>29069173
Fucking Tight
>>
>>29069330
o rite
>>
>>29068778
>Wheel nut torque is significantly more important
laffs in uggadugga
just don't go full retard using max setting blasting for 10s and know you're tools
my 18v makita impact says 300nm for setting 1 so i've been using that + 1 ugga on 2
>hurr you're gonna ruin you're wheels
0 wheels destroyed
>>
I have calibrated elbows.
>>
>>29068332
You’re not a doctor. If you were you’d mention billing codes.
>>
>>29068238
>A smaller breaker bar or wrench might be unweildy at reaching those numbers
Maybe for you
>>
>>29070125
if i loosened that bolt with the torque wrench would it die?
>>
>>29070042
I'm a surgical resident I don't get into coding yet unless forced to. But this conversation gets a 22 modifier.
>>
I'm a mechanic and I've literally never used a torque wrench in my life
>>
>>29069148
Any respectable mechanic uses the RFT setting
>>
>>29069324
I'm not an A&P, not necessary for building aircraft here.
Build up experience and get an aerospace job.
Eventually secure a union plane gig and enjoy life
>>
>>29067878
I went years without a torque wrench and everything was fine.

Once I got a torque wrench, I use the proper torque value for everything because it is satisfying and confidence inspiring.
>>
>>29070239
>*I'm a lube tech
>>
>>29070448
A&P and factory parts assembler are not even remotely the same job position.
>>
>>29067878
Are Dodge screws counter-clockwise tightened or is OP using a torque wrench to loosen? Or is OP just pushing on a torque wrench?
>>
>>29070589
When you're building aircraft from scratch you're doing the exact same work.
I know because a few of our guys on our team have a&p licenses and they joke that they spent all that time and money for nothing.
>>
>>29070665
either a screenshot from a video or stock image
when i got my classic i fucked off the left handed wheel studs, fuck that shit.
>>
>>29070680
When I was in school getting my a&p boeing visited and said it was useless for them and only ended up turning everyone away from them. I make significantly more working line for an airline and hardly do anything compared to assembly.
>>
>>29067878
I don't know if people even understand why torque specs are recommended.

For one thing, it is to prevent over tightening.
Another thing, is to ensure even tightening.

Im still suspicious that inconsistent uneven tightening of wheel lug nuts cause more problems than people imagine possible.especialy on the front end
>>
>>29070680
If they are a line assembly worker then they did waste their time with that license because that's not what that license is for.

Also, the base A&P is literally the lube tech entry level licensing. It's not where you stop, it's where you begin.
I know people working at Lufthansa in service positions making fucking bank. As usual the retarded and lazy will fail to do anything of merit with their career (see: the average grease monkey car mechanic)
>>
>>29067878
I don't even have a torque wrench.
>>
>>29067878

no but i started replacing all the hose clamps when i do work cuz i always overtighten them. i always torque to spec on anything with a seal, suspension/driveline components, or whenever i tighten something down on a bushing. im overly aggressive so ill crush the bushing if i dont torque it.
>>
>>29068332
Pornstar here
Fucked this guy's wife last night
Also I do not "torque spec" I go by feel, either I snap a bolt or I have a catastrophic failure at 120mph!
