Mustang needs to move to the Explorer platform so there's at least some commonality with another Ford product if it's to survive much longer. OTOH there's some indication that demand for sedans is increasing, or at least that SUV's have topped out, and there some rumblings of Ford returning to the sedan market and perhaps Mustang could be paired with that
