That was/is common on a lot of Chinese EV cars but since then even the Chinese have made improvements on shielding the battery (well, for the most part).

American, Korean, and our favorite European brands have always made EVs have a very strong protection mechanism on their batteries as these places have actually strictly enforced safety standards.

I got a jaguar i-pace with 100k miles and its battery has only 83% left. The car still has 220 miles of range, which is okay for me.

The problem with EVs are not batteries, but very new type of vehicle design that can be handled only by a tiny minority of existing car shops. A random shortcut in wiring or some electric module can take a lot of time and money to fix. Not cool if you have only one vehicle.

meaning you can buy a relatively fucked up leaf for next to nothing. put ~5k into it in parts/labor and have a ~200 mile range car

refurb batteries aren't some black magic, car manufacturers aren't using some unknown/rare/bespoke type of battery

Fast charging can be bad for lithium batteries because it generates excess heat. Not a huge problem in EVs because they have better thermal management than something like a smartphone.

It's not just the heat, the fast charging works by pushing more volts, more volts increases the chances of getting internal arcs, which are the main culprit behind the loss of charge, each one of those arcs pierce the thin layer separating the anode from the cathode, lowering the capacity of the cell until it eventually stops holding enough charge

Many homes don't have the power requirements for a 50+ amp 220v outlet.
My house for example is maxed out just running a laundry dryer.
The city did a power study and found my neighborhood could handle 20% of the cars charging overnight.
The overall city could handle around 30% EVs.

Power grid is not there.
And now places like Cali are charging for EV charging And solar usage.
There's no way around it.

According to the guys at EV Clinic the battery is not the first thing to worry about in an EV. Its an expensive part - especially when it has to be replaced as a whole.
There are already repair sets for the motors of common EVs.

Not everybody has a 200A panel in their attached garage. If you need to run power from your panel in the basement up to your garage or out to your detached garage it's going to be a fuck of a lot more than $600 to install a L2 charger. Is the utility company going to pitch in for the $20k it's going to cost to rip up my patio and grass?
