I find that a lot Lotus/Caterham/Locost style track car owners are almost always guys in their 40s or 50+ undergoing a midlife crisis. They take them out like 3 times a year in the back of a molded trailer to a small kart track and do lap times before eating a sandwich and going home in their SUV that pulls the trailer. It's like when a boomer says they are a real golfing or fishing enthusiast with 1000s of dollars of kit but only go out 2 times a year to justify their waste of money to their kids that they refuse to drip generational wealth to.

Your statement is completely true for Caterham/ actual Lotus 7 owners, but Locost guys are usually younger/middle age enthusiasts that don't have enough money to buy a Caterham, but also know enough fabrication to cobble together their own shitbox. Speed is one aspect of driving but that is not what defines the experience of driving, there are far more physical forces at play with your body. Remove more from a car and the more you feel. Tactile force is far greater and your senses become more exposed to the elements. You become more intune with what the car experiences. That's why a true enthusiast's car for capital D "Driving" is something like a Austin 7 or anything adjacent to pre-war. The Lotus 7 and it's derivatives are stimulating because their foundations come from pre-war track cars, but people like OP mistake the forrest for the trees.

But I think you would agree there is a major difference in the driving experience of an F1 car and something like an opentop porsche in the countryside or a jeep offroad. Enjoyment is not fixated on intense speed and managing it, every carfag would be riding bikes if that was the case. Driving is more multi-faceted than that.

I just put the beefiest racing clutch and heaviest clutch springs I could find in it to account for the extra weight of the car.
