Im thinking of getting new suspension for my car. The old suspension system is heavily worn out. The old system was the TEIN Flex Z that came with the car. Its done me well so id probably get it again but im looking for input. I dont track the car and live in the countryside with lots of potholes so comfort is the high point. OEM is not an option unfortunately. Just looking for a TOP 3-5 list before i commit
>>29077508What model car is it?
Not to hijack your thread anon but I need opinions on whether its worth dropping $10k on top of the line airbag setup for my S124 project or just go static. A couple people tell me that running bags is so uncomfortable and boaty and I should just run static low.
>>29077538hey ima let you finish but what shocks should I get for my maverick
>>290775101998 NB MX-5
>>29077538daily driver or show car?>$10k top of the line airbag setupcan you break down the $10k specifically how much on the management vs actual suspension components?>bags is so uncomfortable and boatyi mean 100% honesty dude if you compare it to the oem mercedes ride you will find it uncomfortable no matter how much money you spend>static lowold mercs are not designed for this just fyi. even with bags there are clearance issues with the front geometry, i had to get custom lower control arms so the shocks cleared the bags and didn't rub. so if you go static and its a daily driver expect busted oil pans, stress on the abs system, stress on the driveline, exhaust leaks, etc.
>>29077508Send it out to tein for a rebuild
>>29077594>daily driver or show car?I want it to be as close to show car spec as I can get it without going to insane levels of spending. This will not be a daily at all>break downPicrel is the kit, they dont sell the bags on their own though. Not locked for this choice but its slim pickings here down under. Kinda just had this as a rough idea of what it would be>oem mercedes rideFair. Was the smoothest car I've ever been in bar none, Rolls Royce included>static lowIm not chasing rails on the ground, just a nice tuck with 18sIs that your W124(?) in the vid??
>>29077546Put a 6" lift on it.
>>29077546https://cart.bilsteinus.com/complete-kit-48-086097.htmlNot cheap, but damn good.
>>29077508My suspension blew out and I put the cheapest aftermarket Chinese assembled suspension on and it rode smoother than ever and they lasted longer than OEM, granted my car is a Toyota and their suspension notoriously shits the bed early. The OEM lasted about 40k miles before struts blew out and springs wore out, the aftermarket like 100k miles.
>>29077825Ive read the quality of bilstein has gone down over the years. That true?
>>29077883Not really. The only difference is instead of a screw on cap, they crimp the shock bodies closed. For a MX5/Miata, you want to get a set of B6 Bilsteins, put sleeves/collars on, get 7 inch 2.5 springs, I recommend spring rates of about 500 front, 300 rear (firm. not harsh) and put poly isolators on the top hats to prevent rattleshttps://www.clubroadster.net/threads/budget-bilstein-ballers.198881/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organicI did it and it turned out great, but I'm on an NA
>>29077932>Not really. The only difference is instead of a screw on cap, they crimp the shock bodies closed.so they're disposable rather than built to be maintained
>>29077992Nobody rebuilds em anyway, they're $122 shocks right now on Rockauto. And they rarely wear out. I don't know anyone who would rebuild one for less than the cost of a new one.
>>29077508Tein is shit Like complete garbage.Worse than a OEM shock by far.In the budget category, Koni Yellows are absolutely unbeatable. There's nothing out there in that price range that's better. I can show you shock dyno plots to prove it If you want better than a Koni Yellow, you're going to have to penny up some serious cash.Penske, ohlins, MCS, JRI are all good But are 10x the cost.
>>29078208>my summer car intensifies
>>29077546Consider the Taiwanese shit for them. MeisterRs are pretty good for Miatas. Ditto SuperMiata Tecnas, FM VMaxxs and Xidas, and other options I missed like GWRs (Konis). Fortunately Miatas have a ton of decent options. Teins are universally shit though. Not a fan of ST/KWs or Bilsteins either. They don't work well on Japanese applications unless revalved for higher springrates imo and work better on German cars.
>>29077608yessir, w201. if you want to save money and can find options for an analog/manual management set up i would recommend it, i know bag riders used to offer this but not sure if they still do. you would need to do some custom interior work like getting a bracket for the gauges, etc. but nothing a local machine shop can't do and still cheaper than 3p/3h. money you save on management can be spent on cooler stuff like hard lining the trunk in my opinion.i also would highly recommend not going with any "universal" shocks from bag kits, i've only ever seen complaints on ride quality and build quality. make sure the bags they include in the kit aren't some cheap junk like i had lol. after like 2 years of trying out parts i use custom shortened CAtuned coilover shocks paired with ss-5 bags. that's a set up for laying frame though, if you want to tuck 18's at some shows you'd be fine with a basic bag kit, but if you can find a kit that's just the tank/pump/lines/management and then source your own bags and shocks i think you'd be happier with the end result.
People hijacked my threadThe car is a toyota altezza/Lexus IS300I was basically gifted the car. Its not in the best condition but its getting there. Whats wrong with Tein? Also Konis is just the shock/strut? Could i just use the tein springs then? Also is the koni ride height adjustable?
>>29078488those are all questions you can answer yourself much more dependably than asking anons. For example, to find out if koni makes an adjustable shock for your car, you would search "koni adjustable shocks altezza" and look through the results, and you could try "use tein spring with koni shock altezza" and you don't have to wait for someone to answer with insane bullshit or deliberate misguidance. There are probably boomerstyle forums centered around this model of car too, those can be a wealth of information and pictures.
>>29078553I checked threads but a bunch of those are over 15 years old. Times change and companies change their quality. Like i see tein used to be good in the USA now i see they are crap. I hear the japanese TEIN is still good. But companies like blitz and cusco and HKS never came up. And a large portion of people that modify cars speak from the UK so their opinions differ than the US and Japanese market. Thats why i ask on here
>>29078208>>29078219On some cars Konis are the optimum choice, on some cars it's Billies, it just depends.
>>29078241The B6s are pretty good on Miatas but you gotta run sleeves with pretty high spring rates if you intend to go lower. It seems like universally the japanese don't design good suspension, whether a car or motorcycle. Miatas basically ride on their bump stops in the rear
If you can get them in the markets where 1998 NBs exist - I love my Supermiata Tecna. Actual one piece dampers, no two piece adapters with adapters and limited stroke. Lots of travel, my GT rates are very comfy while still keeping the car planted. Get the remote adjuster extensions so you keep the interior panels in and still adjust them.
Since this sorta turned into a general suspension thread, anyone got experience with Vogtland? Apparently they make the springs for KW and KW likely makes the dampers for their kits.
Is there a suspention tier list that exists?
Is there aftermarket suspension that makes your car softer than stock? Because everything just looks focused on making your car a pseudo-track machine.
>>29077508I have those on my car. Honestly, they’re better than chink coilovers and cost the same, which is amazing, but they’re basically OEM spec replacements and honestly I think the OEM shocks are better. If you’re broke they’re fine. If not I’d get ohlins (like $1500/set now due to the cheap yen).
>>29078219>>29078208Oh yeah, I had koni yellows on my 240sx back in the day, amazing compared to these fucking teins.
>>29078463Damnnn thats a sick setup for the switches too. You reckon analog over the others? Main thing that attracts me would be the ability to somewhat maintain a way of keeping SLS funcionality with bags being able to raise the rear If I have stuff or people there but idk how that would go with analog setups
>>29081439Second this oneOr any good springs that fit just about any struts
