That is around the time the 80s styling definitively ended and the bar of soap styling took over in the zeitgeist. Pop up headlights were just about done by then too with limited exceptions.

This was an actual point of concern for a while in the UK. Old cars can't match modern MOT or emission standards so a line had to be drawn on what is exempt and what is not. Insurance providers have "Modern Classic" policies for cars around 25 years old, but if they are 40 years old they are exempt from tax or MOT requirements. But there's also a more definitive line drawn around silver plate eligibility as modern cars arn't allowed to have them due to dystopian reg cameras everywhere that don't pick them up properly compared to normal yellow/white plates. So a car can only have "historic plates" if they were made and registered before January the 1st 1980, anything after is not old enough. A Mini made before then can mount them but a Mini made in the 90s, despite looking almost exactly the same, cannot. It's pretty funky as a result, but it's a clear line in the sand if "it has to be 40 years old" is not straight and narrow enough.
