i'll start with the e-type jaguar. ugly silhouette, ugly rear end, ugly wheel arches. looks good in race spec though

I wouldn't go as far as "ugly", but most mid-engined cars look too "cab forward" to me

yeah there's something vaguely off putting on that, it's a little bit too polished and sleek. I wouldn't call it necessarily 'ugly', but it's not their best design either.

Anything made by the Italians post-1945, barring, perhaps the original Fiat 500 (though I guess the term is cute and not beautiful in this case). I would add Skylines and post-1962 Bugattis. Or really everything from the 1980s on has a degree of ugliness regardless to what it is, with a few exceptions.

French cars are just more appealing than Italian ones, to me.

I don't like how Cadillac-ish the rear of the 1st gen Monte Carlo looks.
>>
>>29081922
Not at all. They are all pretty ugly, regardless of make. Ugly grilles, tacky styling, misshapen body proportions, slab sided creations that were built with only a straight edge ruler.

Even Italian cars that I like, such as the 1st gen Fiat Panda are ugly (it is just a box with a couple of lawn chairs for seats), let alone a lot of the crap that I fail to see the appeal of (Lamborghini comes to mind, especially their older cars).
>>29081928
This I disagree with, I find it quite nice and streamlined, perhaps even some callbacks to streamline moderne design, which was when the most beautiful cars ever made first graced the roadways. That said, the Citroen DS not in the same category as, say, a Delage D8, or a Delahaye Type 165. It is not too far removed, though, but not every Citroen DS is equal, a DS Usine convertible by Chapron is well above a DSuper or DSpecial (which are the downmarket models).

Suffice to say, I am not a fan of so-called "supercars" or "hypercars" to begin with, so please forgive me on my crass remarks towards a lot of Italian automakers and auto designers. I can list more exceptions thinking about it, but exceptions are not rules and some of those are one off specials, so they might as well not count (certain Fiat 8Vs and Maserati A6s, but collectively that is 200 cars built at the most, so survivors are perhaps few, rare and expensive).

Why was a convertible by a coachbuilder called Usine when Usine means Factory?
>>
>>29081595
Speaking of - mid 'sixties T-Birds. The ragtops are absolutely beautiful. The hardtops? Jesus I cannot stand them. They have the same ugly-ass "rectangularized" roof as the 63-65 Riviera, which is considered one of the most beautiful body-styles, ever.
>>
>>29082152
All 60's T-birds look fucking horrendous. Front of the 61-63 model looks like a Temu Sting Ray.
>>
>>29082146
Because you bought it through Citroen and not Chapron, it was a factory commissioned and Citroen approved, hence Usine. This came from an agreement, where Citroen would send a nearly complete car to Chapron and they would finish it.

Every other Chapron model of the DS was not a factory commission, but those too are lovely and are not one-offs. That side, they command among the highest values of Citroen DS models.

I think I would like this if the tires weren't so narrow. It makes it look proportionally goofy. If you put some fat rubber on there it might balance out the look. I have the same problem with classic range rovers, the tires are so spindly and thin. I've posted a restomod of an E type and I think it looks a lot better with the fat tires.
>>
>>29082157
>side
I meant to have said "aside".

I guess I should say further that of the Chapron specials Le Leman is the one I like the most. Citroen got a case of automotive dementia with replacing the DS, with the CX and BX. In case someone wonders, the SM, is a different category of car entirely, being a GT car, rather than an executive or large family car depending on the model. I do like the SM, but there are a couple of unflattering angles to it, truth be told. I believe this is thanks to the rearmost side window being angled, which looks good straight on, but if viewing from a front quarter panel, you notice the rather abrupt transition to the rear of the car, like it was a stylistic afterthought. A minor detraction from me, but again, a lovely car.
>>

Thank you, that makes sense. Alpine are really the only French marque I'm familiar with, and there Usine was used for customer competition cars.

The nu Vantage is the only car that makes me feel genuinely ill. The front 1/3 is so simplistic it looks unfinished, and the rear is way too busy and has a sad melted alien insect face. The color and wheel choices that are typical on these probably don't help
>>
>>29081600
>G wagon

>Same. Especially at the price point.

Exclusivity
They're expensive and limited because they're built by hand in Austria
This makes them expensive to make, and lowers the production numbers.
Raising the price even more.
>>
>>29081547
Now post an example of what you consider to be a beautiful car.
>>
>>29082201
The rear third is the most appalling bit, it just ends. It tries to end nicely with flaring it but the geometry of the flare looks wrong. I would argue that Aston should focus on calling back to their most attractive car the DB4 GT Zagato. They tried with the front 1/3, but did it poorly, the roofline curve too is rather unappealing. A roofline is best designed as an ellipse or a wide, unskewed parabola. This is skewed, which is indeed very ugly. The read should curve down too, rather than up, but not curve down in the way those awful crossovers do it, it should start with a slowly rounded slope, that then curves at an increasing rate, most drastically close to a point "normal to the horizon", if this makes sense. In other words, design the car like it was an Aston Martin, not this thing, which is ostensibly anything but. And really I blame the DB7 for the beginning of this loss of character, because it started becoming an car slowly and despite this being a Vantage and not a "modern DB", it has a lot of what made the DB7 the least of attractive of all AMs in it.

This is an issue with all auto makers in that they do not know how to design cars. I get that aerodynamics and safety are two factors, but that is only part of it. Expression is part of design too, and that the job of a good engineer is to understand the aesthetics equates to form and that form follows function. Always, if it looks right, then chances are you are right the right starting point. As companies design by committee rather than by man, identity is stripped. Committee heads are the new normal. Which perhaps is for defense tech, but it is not fine if civilian consumers are involved and this is why people "pay for the name".

Mind you, I prefer Bristol to Aston Martin, for a host of reasons (one of which being that I just like Bristols more... a nice pair of them would be smashing), but this looks like it could be a BMW or even a Xiaomi, which is a horrid thought, in earnest.

This is made up. Fix the Vantage's gaping maw of a grille, delete the rear diffuser, and change the terrible tail lights and it'll be fine. It already looks halfway presentable without the eyesore tennis ball yellow and terrible black/diamond cut wheels.

I still think it looks misshapen beyond that, everything else is what I hate I hate about, but the shape of the front end is also awful. It is far too, dare I say, aggressive looking in that it bears an edge instead of a curve. The roofline is like a backwards egg.

I spent way too much time in paint, but here you go. I did my best to showcase everything what I mean is wrong about it and how to put it right.

>>29082368
Man, I really fucked up the first bit, forgive me.

I meant to say that the front end is awful too. It is too aggressive, too sharp, too pointed. The back end likewise, but this stretches beyond the diffuser. The tail looked like that of an Australian cattle dog, rather than an AM. Of course, no fins, but fins would not pass in the modern day anyway, unfortunately, which does detract from the appearance, but also, I am not going to shade and mark out fins in paint trying to show something to Anonymous on a Mongolian basket weaving website.

I used to think this also, specifically about the E-type which dad loves and so many other people seem to regard as beautiful (famously Enzo).
But then I learned more about Jaguar and racing - you see Jaguar was big in the racing scene and the E-type was basically just a road going adaptation of their D-type racing car.

Once you realise the E-type is really supposed to be a racing car first and foremost, and then you start looking at variations of the car in racing trim, I think you'll understand the appeal.

>>
>>29083608
Does it? Because it's hainous. BMW hasn't made a good looking car for over 2 decades.
>>
>>29083608
This car has no redeeming features. Notice how the amount of bodywork over the front and rear wheels makes the rear wheels look smaller? That's a common problem that some stylists try to make - but not BMW. The front grille/nosecone looks planted on and doesn't seem to follow the downward curve of the hood, as though it's from a different model. Those stupid-looking square lower cooling intakes that jut forward. There's a weird combination of angular features and curves, as if it carries a Demon Tweeks bodykit. And the bulge in the hood line - I know it's for PedPro, but guys! Some manufacturers don't just bulge the bonnet to give crush space.
The whole thing is incoherent. It was as if it was the stylists first job and it sneaked out into production without ever getting a design review.

Thank you for reading my blog.

I agree, but I will relate a cautionary tale I'm sure you're aware of. Remember the original Audi TT? All Bauhaus design and almost symmetrical in side profile? Remember how they had to recall them to graft an obvious, aftermarket-looking spoiler on the trailing edge of the rear deck to stop them falling off autobahn bends at speed because of rear-end lift? Be careful what you wish for.
