https://www.theautopian.com/there-was-a-time-when-you-could-get-a-ford-minivan-with-rear-wheel-drive-and-a-manual-transmission-holy-grails/

"As Hagerty writes, the beginnings of the Ford Aerostar come from one of those responsible for Chrysler’s minivans: Lee Iacocca. In the early 1970s, Iacocca was an executive at Ford, and he had ideas for products that Ford should put to market next. One of them was for a van that sat no higher than six feet, or short enough to fit in an American 7-foot garage. Iacocca saw sales in a vehicle with the practicality of an Econoline but in a smaller form factor. In 1972, Iacocca’s idea became a prototype called the Carousel. It was smaller than a Volkswagen Bus, but maintained the body-on-frame construction and massive 460 V8 of the Econoline."

There's no way this had a 460 big block.

fuckin retard wrote that. Econoline didn't get the 460 until 1975.

You could get manual RWD Aerostars in the '90s. Same powertrains from the Ranger/Explorer.

You could get a 4x4 Chevy Astro van in the 90s.

My buddy had two Astros (4x2 and a 4x4) and I had two S-10s, an '89 4x4 and a '95 S-10, all used the same engines, trans and axles.

Great vehicles with good power and a useful payload yet still practical for suburbia and cheeper than a full-size.

My understanding is that nowadays, the Colorado/Canyon trucks cost _more_ than a full-size pick-up.

I still visit autopian out of habit, but its clearly Jalopnik 2.0 currently. They've got a tranny that writes 2 daily filler articles about bullshit clearly nobody cares about or even reads. Shit like $60,000 motorcycles, $20,000 EV bikes, RVs, and big rigs. I get it, written media needs volume just to keep the lights on.

Then they have some dork that worked at a dealership and had at one point like 30 shitboxes on their lot as his personal storage until they realized he hadn't worked there in several years and told him to get them all the fuck outta there.

The the sporadic guest writer that makes these ultra-long diatribes because they have nothing better to do.

After that is the comments section thats reddit-lite. People demanding smaller less powerful engines, smaller vehicles, higher taxes on gas guzzlers, more EVs, and anything tangential to politics like Trump's tariffs on Canadian motorcycles automatically gets the most comments about how much they hate trump and embarrassing it is to have him as a president. Most of the commenters don't even like cars which is confusing for a car-focused website. Then theres like 5 long-term members who are clearly car guys with rad shit they didn't inherit and actually know their stuff. They're usually the ones blasting articles for getting important shit incorrect versus the others trying to correct the grammar (incorrectly).

Its a shitty website that should only be used for "huh, let me look into that on my own".

Larping as a salesman and flying under the radar for years while keeping your massive shitbox fleet on someone else's property is super based. He must have been a good talker, how do you even make that happen? Kek.

Same goes for the GMC equivalents, so pic related is technically possible.
