A first oil change will always be gross, but usually anything verging on metallic cappuccino is a very bery bad sign lol. That said what bike? And if it rides fine send it. My KLR oil ends up looking sorta greenish and cloudy by the end of the oil’s life

This is good, your bike is getting material out of it.
Varying the rpms is what Harley mechanics told me. Going above the rpm ceiling is not the end of the world.
It will be fine, enjoy it! And congrats!

loosen forks. Look up motorcycle fork alignment. They are commonly out of alignment.

When I'm putting my axels through my wheels/forks I usually put my legs under the front of the bike and use my knees/thighs to hold the wheel up while I put the axle through.
>>
>>29084593
Jesus christ. I've never heard a blackbird sound like a 125.
Best case scenario would be exhaust leak.
But it also does kind of sound like a piston is slapping around or something.

>riding season is over in three months
Not for me, feel sorry for all you guys who would rather take the truck
I was posting a while ago about the guy at my office park with a Janus, turns out he’s the same guy who owns the multistrada. I had a longer conversation with him and the guy in the lot with an Africa twin. They work at the same company in the building. Turns out Africa twin guy is also the owner of the KTM RC990 I see around sometimes, and they both live in PA, nearby where I am - multistrada guy is actually in my city, only about five minutes from my house. Small world.
Africa twin guy bought winter gear this season after seeing my bike in the snow last season, he called me over at close of business yesterday to ask me if the hippo hands were worth it and what I use in the winter. It remains to be seen if I see this guy in January on his bikes, but it seems I’ve inspired somewhat. I’m gonna ride this high for a while.

ZX9R was a great entry level Literbike, and the zx7r was a decent learner bike, even if you would get bored of it pretty quick.
>>
>>29084623
Hnngg, still one of the most beautiful bikes ever.
>>29084923
Kawasaki need to bring back the ZX-9R, considering there's nothing between the 6 and the 10 and everybody has gone back to making middleweight sports. They have the chassis and the engine and would definitely undercut the R9. Plus it would be a proper i4 not a piss twin or triple.
>>
>>29084927
well, theres really no need to have 5 different learner bikes.
The zx6r is the standard learner, then you get the liter.
Easy.
>>
>>29084935
This.
The should get rid of any that are under 600cc i4's.
Everything below that is a scooter anyway.

Update on the crashed bike:
Guy accepted fault to his insurance, so that made dealing with shit a whole lot easier that it otherwise would have been. Dealing with a different insurance man for each this is kinda weird, but stuff is progressing. I'm able to get all my gear replaced, and even a little upgrade since the helmet I bought on clearance isn't available, so I get its successor. It seems like they'll just deliver replacements to my house which is nice. Anyways, if you ever crash and wreck your gear, take lot of pictures of it and you might be able to sneak it into a claim if you ever get hit yourself.
Injuries are being worked through. The only pain I still have is tissue damage in the shoulder, and I went in to a doc to get some medicine for that. I'll probably get an xray if shit doesn't get better, but neither I nor the doctor (who surely knows better) particularly think it is a fracture, so I'm not super worried.
I did just get the message from the bike adjuster that the scrambler is considered a total loss, so pour one out for our fallen brother, anon. No clue what they'll offer me for it, as the aftermarket parts do add up to a fair amount, but I hope it is BIG amount.
Question for US folk: is it true that it is more difficult to insure a salvaged vehicle? Depending on the price, I'm considering buying the bike back and fixing it myself, but a friend of mine who has been riding for a while mentioned that insurance can get hinkey about that. If you have any experience, please let me know

but it's not cringe. it's awesome.

>>29085220
there is seasonal insurance that you can buy for just a riding season, you can often buy a six month premium. additionally, it's already in the math for insurance companies that most people are not riding in the winter, they use this fact to price the product.
i advise against you doing this, since if youre motorcycle gets stolen when you have no insurance youre out of luck, in many places the registration is annoying if youre not insured, and some insurance companies won't insure you if youre in and out of coverage, they see it as a red flag.

Careful putting a VFR onto a living space, this piece of shit is so heavy that it actually might destroy your floor boards or whole beams.

>>29085236
The usual live load design is 40 pounds per square foot. With a five foot wheel base and lets say 6 inches from the outside of the tire to the kickstand, you're looking at, if you make a triangle, 1.25 square feet. With the VFR's weight, we're considering perhaps 440 pounds per square foot. Wow! Sounds like a lot, since floors are designed for 50 pounds per square foot. But wait, if you do the math, people are almost 500 pounds per square foot. So what gives?
Well, consider this. If you had three guys standing next to each other, lets say they're 200 pounds, on the larger end but not huge, you've duplicated the VFRs weight arrangement. Do you think the floor can handle three guys in a row? Of course it can. That's because the load is distributed on many beams, not just on the contact area.
Take my little home office. It's an L shape, 10 by 10 with a 5 by 5 breakout, 75 square feet. The room should take 75*50=3750 pounds of live load. So that's maybe 18 ish people, or perhaps 7 viffers. Structures have considerable strength!

I did figure it out.
So, when you pull the cable it will give you a short measurement, and when you clutch in and pull the cable it will give a larger measurement.
So I put the short measurement at 2mm and this makes the larger measurement 2.50mm, this staying within the 2-3mm range.
I then adjusted the bar to the furthest out and it shifts like a dream and I'm not crushing my fingers anymore.

I've never had a problem with getting insurance. It might be kind of annoying depending on how your registration process is after buying it back from the insurance company. I picked up a bike a while back that had a salvage certificate, and I had to have a VIN inspection and a headlight/brake light/turn signal inspection before I could get the title with a salvaged branding.

Questions for anyone who rides all year.
How, what bike, and what general tips do you have, mainly for the winter. I live in a Midwest city and Im determined to make bikes the main vehicle I use for as long as I can. I have a Honda c70 and ive even found snow tires with good review on webike JP. Id like to learn more and prepare properly. I wonder if a cheap china pitbike with the right tires would be better or if what I have now is fine. I have no experience off road or riding in less than favorable conditions on a motorcycle, I have ridden a bicycle all year, snow included but I doubt that experience completely carries over.

I ride my NC700X all year in PA and NJ.
Tips: buy a DOT class III visibility cold suit, heated gear, especially socks and glove liners (I like gerbing), and hippo hands. Have a helmet with a pin lock visor. Otherwise it's just like riding in the rain. Just like you have worse grip on wet asphalt, you have worse grip on cold asphalt. Go slower, and lean less by being more dramatic with your body lean. Organize your commute to stick to the most important roads and the interstates, which will be well salted, to avoid ice. Ice occurs on salty roads starting under 20 degrees. So under 20 you have to be very careful, eyes sharp for ice. If you must hit ice just go straight. If you live somewhere busy, usually traffic takes care of little icy patches on the highways, keep yourself in the path of the tires in front of you.
I would say it is very similar to riding a bicycle in the winter, except skin is exposed to the weather at 50, 60, 70mph instead of 10,20,30mph, and its much more painful.
>>
>>29085908
If conditions are bad you're just gonna need to go slow and keep your feet down. Treat the bike like a car. If there's snow on the sides of the road black ice is a possibility on the road.

NTA, but I am a civil engineer, and I think his post is basically correct
>there's a 40psf live load
>calculating the psf of the VFR makes it looks bad
>but that's not actually what matters, since you could replace the motorcycle with three guys standing close by, and get the same numbers
>if the load is distributed across many beams
i.e. to me as an engineer not dead center of one beam producing a huge bending moment
>a room should be able to take its live load times its surface area in a relatively evenly distributed way
>an example of even distribution is a bunch of guys standing around
I mean, lets say you replaced the VFR with a couch, maybe 100 pounds, and three dudes sitting on it, maybe 600+ pounds, that's very similar to the motorcycle.
I would have questions about the subfloor, since theres probably a lot of force on the kickstand, you might dent the subfloor if it's like a vinyl floor or something, and I wouldn't put the motorcycle in the middle of the room, I'd keep it near the bearing walls or over columns depending on structure design out of caution. I don't think there's really an issue though, for a motorcycle in a house. After all, with modern light sub floors and floors the design dead load also has play left, and it's the design load, it's not like you'd expect immediate failure. There's substantial safety factor.
Structures isn't my field of work, I do hydrologic and hydraulic work, but as far as I can recall from my education, I think the post is correct.

>>29086278
>>29085908
Also, I forgot to add, theres a turkish company that sells actual winter motorcycle tires, I think they're mostly scooter sized, but with the three mountains and everything. You can google for it. I think they're available in Canada, or maybe you can ask a nice anon in Europe to ship to you.

>but I am a civil engineer
So what you do in the US is assume point loads don't exist because they get distributed through the 1/2 inch plywood across all joists? No wonder there's a massive difference in build quality between those who ACTUALLY know structural engineering and calculate high rises, and civil engineers who don't calculate shit and pick values from tables to build cardboard suburban homes.

Just so you know, a motorcycle stands on two coin-sized areas in close vicinity plus a side stand similarly sized between. You don't compare this to three dudes with 6 legs each of foot sized area, as well as a couch for three dudes that spans across multiple joists.

We could of course start discussion how much does your half inch plywood can hold, but I guarantee it won't survive the design checks. Put the bike in unlucky position perfectly between the joists, try to seat your fat femboy on it while the floor was damaged by spilled water some time ago, and I guarantee you are going down.

I weight 210 pounds, if I stand tip toe on one foot it's a worse point load than any of the three points the VFR touches the ground. It is possible to get really unlucky here, and I pointed that out
>I wouldn't put the motorcycle in the middle of the floor
And I probably wouldn't pivot the motorcycle on the center stand. But to say it isn't an ordinary distribution of load for a building is not accurate, in my view.
Actual contact patch is more like a square foot per tire for each tire. You can imagine two heavyset men, 275 pounds each, taking a step five feet away from one another. 275 pounds each on one foot, for similar contact patches. Do you think a home is designed for this? Obviously it is. You're not thinking straight.
Routine real world examples of ordinary fatties in ordinary buildings show that you're off the mark.
>>
>>29086363
>>29086356
You're also forgetting about how load is transferred when beams deflect, amongst other variables. I'm not really interested in explaining it to you since it's not my original assertion and it's not the area in which I am licensed, but I did double check in my old textbooks to run numbers and I'm positive you are wrong. If you want to believe you're right, that's nothing to me, I don't care if you don't park your motorcycle in your house lol

Thats also the issue, you get one boomer bike, one cd with the 16 ska songs, and one flower hawaii t-shirt, and you have to basically tour with that in fair weather conditions until you reach the destination

Which im sure youll be able to aing the songs by then

Ok bros, im expecting good replies; dont disappoint me

>lifan engine
Most likely either a 125 or 200. They're decent for what they are, I learned to ride on a Lifan farm bike.

The most likely cause of the non-running is the carburettor. You'll need to take it apart and clean it, there are various guides on the internet it's not too complicated. Also replace all the filters and change the oil. Check the fuel tank for rust, if it's bad you'll have to remove it and soak it in vinegar to clear it out.

Good luck with the project anon.

>>

Nigga what? The suit is black, the bike is red. You'd look like a fucking mong trying to colour match your clothing with your motorcycle. The Ducati is classy and sexy, that pairs with your suit not the colours.

it's just too much for what it is. plus it's been sitting so long-- honestly i'd rather it have 20k miles than basically zero. that bike is going to be all sorts of fucked up. really pretty though.
>>
>>29086583
>the rear brakes are not connected
It's a drum brake setup, right? You'll have to remove the rear wheel and take the hub apart, the rear shoes are probably gone and it may have damaged the drum (let's hope not because finding a replacement could be difficult). Chains never last but they are relatively easy and cheap to replace.

When was the last time the bike ran, anon?

Is the SV650 the perfect bike?
I do commuting, Twisties, Touring and rack up really high miles on my bikes when I sell.
I like to use 100% of the power on tap on twisties but don't want anything too slow or license-losing fast, especially when riding abroad.
I've had 600s before but I don't like sitting in 1st or 2nd all day to hit the power band.
The Yamaha triple 900 felt bland and gutless to me while the ninja1000sx and other 1000's were just too much.
The SV has good economy, decent power, legendary reliability and aftermarket parts supply, some wind protection and cheap to own and run
>>
>>29086619
They'd be perfect if they had better brakes and suspension from the factory.
>>
>>29086619
Yes, but also the MT07 if you're looking for something more modern.
>>
>>29086621
Honestly, if I'm headed into this with a budget that could buy a 1000 tourer I'd rather kit the sv out with a full HEL brake system and ohlins suspension overhaul setup for my weight.
>>
>>29086624
Yeah I'd love an mt07 in a sport-touring guise. I'd even consider converting an r7 but it hasn't got a fuel tank worth more than 100 miles.
Rs660 comes to mind, but I clock enough miles a year that I'd come close to being the highest mileage 660 owner ever in just a few years. Not sure I trust the aprilia

More update: Gear is all on its way, and they're offering me 7.2k for the bike, which is nice because I only paid a bit over 6 for it. They've got a 5.8k base value of the bike, and it seems like they're accounting for 50% of the aftermarket parts (none of which I purchased myself). I genuinely do not know. The man who gave it to me had no interest in it and did not know much about it either.
Now the brakes I have not looked into yet, but they are drum brakes. My Civic has drum brakes, I'm familiar with wrenching on those. Hoping I'll just find bad shoes when I tinker on it this evening. I've done some quick searching and it looks like parts are almost nonexistent for these bikes.

Funny reading this since BMW makes the most comfortable stock seats in whole industry, the best wind protection among all tourers except for harleys probably and first keyless in motorcycles in 2010s that actually opens fuel caps and all panniers. So you missed in every single point, shows how retarded /dbt is and how little knowledge you can provide to newcomers.

That was of course Honda with their new CB1000GT.
>>
>>29087217
Germans are retards bro. That's why they challenged.. the entire world. And lost.
Twice.

You'd think this was obvious since the krauts attempted to make a boxer engine in a motorcycle.
>>
>>29087219
There's nothing wrong with boxer engines in motorcycles
>>
>>29087219
Opposite engines are amazing in every single way, especially air cooled ones (not what modern folks want so they are gone since 2013 sadly). Germans in fact invented everything which we currently use in motorcycles including the Japanese motorcycles. Soichiro Honda visited Germany, saw the moped and fell in love. He returned home and tried to replicate it. That's how Honda Super Cub was made.
>>
>>29087073
They're okay. The engine is a little buzzy. Brakes are wooden and the suspension is harsh.
The wiring looms run through to the frame at 30,000 miles and the OEM exhaust will crack before the cat too.

But all in all, they're good bikes worth trying
>>
>>29087230
You're spreading forbidden knowledge.
Japanese motorcycle industry was completely dependent on copying german designs one way or another because they were unable to make bikes of their own.

Their most successful bike before copying foreign designs were license produced harley clones.
