How unreliable is CVT actually? Did it get its horrible reputation from when it was a new, immature tech? or is it still shit?

They're just okay now. After a decade of kinda shit ones making a bad name for CVTs, they've finally made them robust enough to "last" about 150k miles. However theres no actual tangible benefits to them as they originally claimed such as improved MPGs because the engine is in the optimal RPM for either power or effeciency. However with modern day 6, 8, 9, 12 speed automatic transmissions being so good, they're now better than any theoretical CVT advantages.

They're just fine in lighter vehicles like SxS or utility vehicles because they're simply lighter and who gives a shit? JATCO was making cheap shit for Nissans because Nissan wanted a cheap transmission which often failed at like 60k miles and were fully sealed and non-servicable. Even under warranty, they'd simply junk the bad one and install a brand new one. There are no refurbished ones, you can't even change the fluid. This is why CVT's got such a bad rap, but even Honda had several bad batches of them.

It should be noted, an "eCVT" is NOT a CVT transmission at all, and is mostly different, but shares a stupid abbreviation. eCVT's are God's gift to econobox automatics. Actually robust, actually constant velocity, actually good in every way. Cheaper than a 12 speed automatic, but still gives all the claimed benefits of a CVT.

You're performing chemical energy to thermal energy to produce linear power to convert it to rotational power so you can convert it to hydraulic power, then back to rotational power.
Each step along the way you're losing efficiency so whatever gains you make ensuring your motor stays at a high BSFC you're losing in heat to conversion losses.

The only reason ag and heavy equipment use hydrosts is because it's retard-proof. You can't break a driveshaft or grind gears since an overpressure scenario will get released by a safety valve and drained back to the tank which is important when you have room-temperature IQ maga-hat donning blue collar patriot or some brownoid behind the controls.

No, there are ( and have been ) vario-belt CVT's in ag use for quite some time.
They are still very common in utility vehicles like Gators and XUV's, and saw some use in the drives of combine harvesters.

It's plenty reliable. How good are the manufacturers at making them, however?
1st gen non-S MINI Cooper automatics are well known for CVT failures, for instance. Any Jatco CVT-equipped Nissan is well known for CVT failures.
On the other hand, there's plenty of 20 year old Prius models out there with 250k-500k+, all with the original transmission and no issues. The newer Toyota models that have one "real gear" and then the CVT "gear" (most Corollas etc) all seem to be pretty reliable too, I haven't really heard about any widespread failures in any of those.
They're also mind-numbingly soulless to drive. Makes some sense in a hybrid, but nothing's more pathetic than doing a pull and watching the RPM sit perfectly still near redline. It's likely why many newer ones have "manual" shifting modes with fake gears, so you can feel and sound like you're actually doing something.

Yes. You can. Spent (and spend) a lot of time replacing various components of MFWD drivelines because some lump in a seat decided that pressing the forward pedal to the floor was the best course of action when the machine was not doing what they wanted it to.
A hydrostat trans will absolutely make shit go bang in a very expensive manner.

all driveline components of toyota hybrids are permanently locked together with no clutches, fluid couplings or anything like that and their gear ratios are static, but because it's a clever combination of an open differential and an epicyclic gears where the computer is free to dictate how the combustion motor and two of the electric motors spin (and in what direction) the speed of the final drive can be varied.

No because most transmissions are black magic to me. Best I can tell is it's a planetary gear setup that is more robust than a CVT and automatic transmission. Basically they're bomb proof outside of harsh abuse and should outlast any engine. It's also quite smooth when paired with a hybrid powerplant. Toyota and Ford use these eCVTs that regularly make it to 300k miles before the car is junked because of the engine failing.

In a Toyota ecvt you don't even really 'feel' the engine. In my Maverick the engine "idles" at the ideal 2500rpm and the first 30-40% of the pedal causes acceleration without the engine changing rpm. Basically the ideal way to drive the vehicle is to never go above 40% "power" on the meter so the engine never goes above 3k RPM and stays in the efficiency zone. 40% power actually quite a lot when dding too.

It already is manual as can be in the sense ecvt is just "0-100%" depending how far you press the gas pedal. If you floor it, it just immediately outputs as much power and rushes the engine to max rpm (like 5600 on atkinson engines), the engine is even spun up by the electric motors and not a starter so it hits max RPM within a second and doesn't do the natural RPM progression. This is how it is in the maverick anyway, I think toyota hybrids are normally tuned to gradually ramp up the RPM to not "shock" people and drive more like a normal car, hence the slower 0-60s in their hybrids.

CVT is a term for any concept that'll yield a continuously variable transmission, but people usually mean a belt-drive one, which is mechanically entirely different from the eCVT.
The belt-drive one works a bit like the shifting on your bicycle. You vary the size the of one of the cogs so that one rotation of the crank spins the chain further (or less far). Except here that's a belt or chain being squished between cones. Changing the distance between the cones determines how far outwards the belt/ chain goes and thus your drive ratio. The contact area here is prone to wear, badly sized or worn units may slip, which will swiftly spell their end. Also friction will eat most of your savings with these.

The eCVT uses a planetary gear-set (see pic). This gear-set has three shafts. One of these goes to the wheels (well, the diff really, with a big electric motor attached), one goes to the engine, and the third goes to a smaller electric motor / generator that can be set to run in either direction, at a wide range of speeeds an torque. With one output being tied to wheelspeed, the little electric machine determines how fast the engine gets to spin. Any electricity it generates will be sent either to the batter or the bigger motor (or the other way round). There's no room for slippage here, all parts are permanently meshing. So with gear-teeth and electric motors being potentially very durable components this will work a long time if there's enough oil in it.
