I know my car is old. 260k miles on a toyota avalon with an A541E. Did a drain and fill of 3qts back at 230k. Took the car to a shop for unrelated work yesterday and their "courtesy inspection" told me the fluid was burnt.

do i just continue to drain and fill until the car or trans dies? No way I'm doing a pressurized flush.
>>
It's not burnt, that's just your transmission shitting itself breaking into a million parts

And what did your inspection reveal when you looked at the dipstick yourself?
>do i just continue to drain and fill until the car or trans dies?
Yeah, I've done it 3-4 times on shitboxes with burnt fluid before, but when I say burnt fluid I'm talking ink-black, not a desaturated dark brownish-red (still burnt, but 'acceptable'). On the really burnt ones I'd drive ~150 miles and swap fluid again, repeated a few times and it's always worked in my experience.
I don't know if it's got a plug or not, but if you've never had the pan off I'd change out the transmission filter as well if it's original. Won't magically fix burnt fluid, but something very often overlooked and very much a part of preventative maintenance.

brownish red burnt isnt the end of the world, thats like 90% of old cars as the cooling struggles over time
do a service if you feel like it, but i ran a 2008 chevy impala from 180k to 310k and it had burnt trans fluid on day 1 of my ownership and what finally killed it wasnt even the transmission
i did have it flushed once which revealed a trans cooling line leak unfortunately, which was fixed, but other than that it was just replacing the fluid at 220kish and 290k

I havent inspected it yet but if it looks the way it did last time I looked, its more of a dark brown not tar black. I know shops say stuff to get you buy their services so it doesnt phase me.
I actually bought a trans pan gasket and filter to do that but i found out that I had poor clearance under my car and was fucking up the bolts to the to the pan so I gave up. I dont have a lift so my under-car work is me on my back with 4" of space between my face and the car. Its got one of those hex head plugs.

given that its been 20k since my last drain I think I'll do that tomorrow if the fluid does look pretty brown
