They have tons of stupid or impractical engineering, they don't have any sort of reputation for reliability unless they are stupid simple like the 1.9tdi or the 2.slow, parts are either expensive or no longer available for cars that are only 20 years old, and they have this interesting quirk where past a certain mileage you will never get it to just werk without issues without dropping nucar money on it. Maybe it makes sense if you don't care about money and you change your car every 5 years, but at that point just get a Merc.
