With solar it kind of is when you normally produce more than you consume. If he has a lot of land and lives in tornado alley he may also own a wind turbine for similar effect.

1.) He'd have to own a lot of land to put in enough solar panels and or windmills to produce enough electricity to reliably charge a cybertruck regularly
2.) He has to buy all those solar panels and windmills which is also expensive
He just bought the cybertruck, which means he would have had to bought the solar panels/windmills in the last year, very expensive.

>>29099274
>No longer six figures if you include savings.
He lost money buying a cybertruck because of depreciation.
$16000 is no where near enough to flip the depreciation costs.
>Tesla Cybertrucks have experienced aggressive, rapid depreciation, dropping roughly 35% to 45% in value in just their first year of ownership. This decline is exceptionally steep compared to traditional pickup trucks, which historically lose only about 20% of their value in the first year.
>Owners requesting trade-in quotes directly through Tesla or major appraisal platforms have reported receiving offers between $61,000 and $73,500 for vehicles that originally cost $100,000 to $120,000.

He lost WAY more than the savings he got from gas vs electricity.
And again, he still has to pay for the electricity through the city or buying expensive solar panels/windmills.
So he saved $16000 MINUS the cost of the electricity.

>Installing a home solar system has a high upfront cost averaging around $31,100, but the physical panels themselves make up only a small part of that total price.
>The Panels (12%): The actual photovoltaic panels cost around $3,700 of a standard system.
>The Rest of the Bill (88%): Most of your money pays for inverters, electrical wiring, mounting racks, installation labor, local permits, and company sales or overhead costs
Your dumb or just trying to be deceptive.
Yes panels aren't that bad, but it's everything else that actually make them usable that's expensive.
And those numbers are only for a house, the anon was talking about putting large amounts of them on a large open land.
Plus now you have to maintain that system which also cost money.
Its not just installing the system and forgetting about it for 30 years.
It needs regular maintenance and repair.
>>
>>29099316
anon basically everything is solid state unless you get physical breakers. cables last decades as long as they're in a conduit and not directly exposed to UV (then they still last years)
aluminum extrusion isn't ruinous, inverters get cheaper every day, sub-1500 for 12kw is typical on Amazon now, the main cost will be installation which is far easier and cheaper on the ground than on a roof, and permits can usually be circumvented entirely by treating the mounting solution as "temporary" with specific frame designs.

This has gone way off what was the original topic was about.
Yes over time like 30 years you can save money by installing solar panels but it's still expensive when first installed.
But this thread isn't about solar panels, it's about how the guy bought a cybertruck to save money.
And with shit like depreciation and still having to pay for electricity (yes even with solar panels) it did not save him money.
Also, a cybertruck is still a truck.
EV's aren't an appliance like a microwave just because it uses electricity.
It has cooling systems, electric motors, advance computer systems, shocks, tires, wheels, brakes etc. etc.
A Cybertruck doesn't need an oil change but tires are expensive, suspension is expensive, replacing computers is expensive etc. etc.
>While normal truck tires last 50,000 miles, many Cybertruck owners report needing replacements anywhere between 6,000 and 25,000 miles depending on how aggressively they drive.
>A full set, including installation, taxes, and a necessary alignment, routinely runs $2,000 to $2,600.
>Component Costs: An individual OEM replacement air strut alone costs $900 to $2,500+ before labor. If the air compressor pump fails out of warranty, expect a bill between $1,500 and $5,000.
>Based on similar premium Tesla models, replacing a primary media or driving computer unit out of pocket will likely cost $2,000 to $3,500.

You don't buy a cybertruck to save money.
It costs a lot of money to buy, run and maintain.

>Yes, home solar systems do need some repairs and maintenance over time, though the panels themselves are quite tough and rarely break down.
>While salespeople often call solar a "set-and-forget" technology because panels have no moving parts, the wider system includes wiring, mounting hardware, and inverters that do require occasional attention.
>the national average for a solar repair visit typically falls between $250 and $1,500, with most standard fixes averaging around $850
>The hidden financial trap many homeowners overlook is roof repair. If your roof leaks or needs to be completely replaced after the solar panels are installed, you cannot simply patch around them.
>A solar company must come out, disconnect the system, remove all the panels, store them, wait for the roofers to finish, and then reinstall everything. This process generally costs $2,000 to $5,000+ strictly in solar labor before the roofing company even charges a single dollar for their work.

>but I'll conveniently forget that the ram does too

How the fuck do you spend 16k in fuel in a year on a light duty pickup? Is he driving 30k-40k miles a year or is he a hauling 22k lb trailer with him literally everywhere he goes? Even today at $7 a gallon that's 2285 gallons, and assuming 8 mpg that's 18285 miles which is 150% of the national average.
>>
>>29099223
The cybertruck is a light duty truck, like an f-150, or 1500. It's a very specific workload where it would make sense to be using a truck when you're spending that much on gas, but you also don't need an hd truck. The cybertruck is also hideous. If I was forced to get an electrick truck, (lol) I'd rather get a discontinued lightning than a new cybertruck.
>>
>>29099731
>The cybertruck is a light duty truck, like an f-150, or 1500.
Like fuck it is. Have you seen what happens when you try to tow with one? It's a crossover not a truck.
>>
>>29099733
Sorry, sorry. It's classified as a light duty truck, but they decided to make the structure from aluminum, and the cosmetic body pannels out of steel. That way you get the worst of both worlds, with no upsides.
>>
>>29099630
Nobody said they were "affordable". The argument was that you're saving money in the long run.
>>
>>29099630
Bro, it's a $4000 truck! Can you even buy one that runs for that much?
>>
>>29099782
Clearly not. The only way to get affordable transportation is to buy an $80,000 steel box that makes everyone hate you on sight then try to claw back the purchase price over the next decade with theoretical future fuel savings.
>>
>>29099390
Oh so maybe after a decade you'll begin to actually see savings, depending on gas (and electricity) prices. That's great.
>>
>>29099742
>The argument was that you're saving money in the long run.
I already save money by running older vehicles and working on them myself. The money I spend on fuel for them is negligible. I'm still way money ahead over buying a new Tesla and all the bullshit subscriptions/electrical crap required to run it.
>>
>>29099816
But other people already have solar and need to replace their ageing car anyway. Your situation doesn't apply to everybody.
>>
>>29099816
100,000,000 million new vehicles are sold every year. If those people decided to buy used, the price of a used car would be as expensive as new.
>>
>>29099839
>But other people already have solar and need to replace their ageing car anyway.

Hell I already have solar and it still wouldn't pencil out. You realize they size your solar system to you current electricity needs. Then adding an electric vehicle after the fact increases your usage to the point that you are again consuming electricity rather than producing it. I had my system put on before I got married and my wife wasn't living here full time yet. Now with her and two kids and running the A/C more my power consumption has gone up and the solar system doesn't 100% cover it anymore. Yes some people DIY their systems and oversize them more than the 10% industry standard, but that's pretty fucking rare.

>>29100078
>100,000,000 million
gonna go ahead and doubt that number.
>>
>>29100103
Expanding a solar system doesn't require you to invest into things like an inverter. There's also little reason to size it to your needs instead of sizing it to what your roof can handle. You always end up feeding excess electricity into the grid.
Even if you have to buy elecricity in winter it's still going to save you money compared to not having solar at all. EVs charged from the grid are cheaper to operate than having to buy fuel.

100 million corresponds to the number of cars produced in total, half of them are made in China alone. Maybe not all of them are sold but that's not going to make a huge difference.

You phrase it like you're not
• buying a charge station + supplies + equipment + worker's salary
• buying the energy to charge your car from the grid.
And, no, that's not "cheaper." Or efficient, even by "Level 1" charging standards/costs.
>>
>>29100138
Bro is really trying his best to argue that electricity isn't more economical than gasoline or diesel. Literally all industries are moving to electric because it's more economical. Why do you think all autonomous fleets are electric? I haven't heard of an autonomous taxi service that uses gasoline.

120V is only standard for Americans anyway, the rest of the world uses 230V. And 400V AC chargers are standard for EV+house owners.
3 miles per hour doesn't even sound that bad when you let it charge for half the day but most outlets aren't made for constant use.

>>29100125
>here's also little reason to size it to your needs instead of sizing it to what your roof can handle.
That's just how it is/was done around here. It may have changed since then, but with the government payback program you could only oversize by a certain percentage before it wasn't covered under their program. Basically the power company would pay you for all the electricity you produced at the end of each year for 10 years. Not just the amount you over-produced.

I actually bank power in the winter and spring, and then it gets used up in the summer heat due to running the a/c. Then when fall hits I start banking agian.

Level 2 chargers can be had for like ¥20000, and it costs very little to get a 240 outlet installed.
You can do the math yourself on what it would cost to fill an EV. Both electrical cost and battery capacity is measured in kWh.

Yes goyim, do not ride an ebike!
You WILL buy a base model nu-car listed for $80,000
You WILL finance a 48-month loan at $1,200 a month at 30% interest
You WILL buy insurance that does jack shit for $120/month
You WILL spend $120 filling up the gas tank every week.
You WILL spend the money unlocking DLC features to be able to drive normally
You WILL enjoy being stuck in congested traffic on the way to and back from work
AND YOU WILL BE HAPPY.

This.
The math doesnt work out no matter how you try to get that $16k in savings.
The only possible way to even get close is if he has an existing solar setup (not factored into his "savings") and he runs a limited daily route and is able to recharge it nightly at home.
$16k in fuel for that ram is equal to about $15k in charging costs at public high speed chargers for the cybertruck to get the same mileage.
>>
>>29107119
Can you go into more detail regarding the assumed fuel and electricity consumption?
You don't really have to drive long distances to use a lot of fuel, driving at slow speeds in the city or in mountainous areas heavily favors EVs.
>>
>>29100143
Nope. It has to be like $0.80 a kwh, and that was before the child rapist started a war.
>>
>>29107128
>driving at slow speeds in the city or in mountainous areas heavily favors EVs.
Its not a prius.
The cybertruck weighs over 3 tons. Stop&Go traffic annihilates its range.
Going uphill annihilates its range.
>>
>>29107166
And going downhill regains it. The mass doesn't matter.
>>
>>29107095
Just a few more and we can get to 100,000 billion!

Making up nonsense numbers is fun!
>>
>>29107166
Stop&go is bad for ICE because the engine is very inefficient at low speeds and the you constantly have to brake, annihilating all the energy you put into acceleration. Electric motors have a broader spectrum and are for most part single-speed and the motor also doubles as a regenerative brake so you can recuperate part of the energy invested.

It's just like watching Kanye West trying to figure out why people think he's a gay fish.
>>
>>29107202
Youre talking in theoreticals and not real world observations.
Cybertruck goes from 300 miles range to 90 miles when towing.
The same thing happens in the desert when it has to cool the batteries.
Same thing happens in the winter when you dont want to drive with the passenger compartment at -2°

Imagine that dodge ram going from 12mpg to 3mpg when towing. That doesnt happen.
>>
>>29107287
What exactly does that have to do with regen braking? Even gigantic garbage trucks work well with electric motors.
>>
>>29107287
>Cybertruck goes from 300 miles range to 90 miles when towing.

>>
>>29107350
You mean while towing without ever actually using the regen brake? It's not some magic that cuts down all losses, it just help reduce the energy lost via friction brakes. You're not going to drive up a mountain and come back with a higher SoC unless you picked up extra cargo on the top.
>>
>>29107314
You do realize that putting weight in the bed has the same type of effect, right?
The issue isnt "something behind the truck".
The issue is the added weight that the truck has to move.
>>
>>29107389
The fact that people have reported sub-100 mile range AT ALL should be alarming to you.

And as a side note theres actually a mine at the top of the mountain and the massive dump truck they use is electric with regen and since it goes down loaded and back up empty it recharges itself in a pseudo perpetual motion machine setup (uses up potential energy, but still kind of cool).
>>
>>29107399
If you want to tow something for 100 miles you should do it in a way that minimizes drag.
>>
>>29107405
If I want to tow something 100 miles apparently I cant do it in a cybertruck.
>>
>>29107391
At maximum load the worst case scenario is 110-130 miles. Not sure where the 90 mile number is coming from.
>>
>>29099267
they're paying for the early adopter trugg, in 10 years when a good electrugg costs 45k they'll be more cost efficient than a prius

Even 110 is pathetic.
For the record I like the EV concept. But implementation has been forced and the technology isnt ready.
For some wagie who commutes 15 miles for his McJob its fine.
But youre telling me that if I want to go pickup a project car it has to be within a 54 mile radius or im going to run out of power during the trip?!?!
Ive driven 300 miles, loaded a car, drove halfway home and stopped to fill up (which took 2 minutes) on the way back.
To do that in a cybertruck is going to be an additional THREE FUCKING HOURS AT CHARGING STATIONS during the trip.
Thats absolute clown world.
>b-b-but how often do you actually make that trip???
Thats just one example of how neutered life with an EV is.
>>
>>29107597
It's fine. 98% of truck drivers will have a use for it since they don't carry 10,000lb loads for hundreds of miles with a strict time schedule that doesn't allow 20 minute stops. Then when all the workers and companies are using EV trucks, they can undercut ones using gas trucks, forcing them to adopt them anyway and just figure out ways to work around the mileage restrictions.
>>
>>29107605
Its 230 miles from my house to Big Bear ski resort.
It take 50 minutes to charge a cybertruck from 0% to 80%.
If im driving from sea level to 6,752 feet elevation during the winter, how much longer will the trip take with a cybertruck vs a Tacoma or F150?
>>
>>29104157
Not in America. You know our towing standards are vastly different, right?

>>
>>29107617
I don't know. Maybe 30 minutes? Depends if you usually stop for gas, then grab a bite to eat or break. Do you instead charge the car while you eat? Every road trip I went on I would do other stuff while charging. I wouldn't just sit in my car.

You suck at math.
>cybertruck loses 15%-30% of range in cold weather to heat batteries and passenger compartment.
>cybertruck loses another 15%-30% if travelling up steep grades.
Thats potentially (3) hour-long stops (just to get there)
I do the round trip without stopping for fuel at all.
>>
>>29107617
>It take 50 minutes to charge a cybertruck from 0% to 80%.
That's more of a Tesla specific issue since their Superchargers only work at 400V. Get an electric pickup with 800V and use fitting chargers and it should charge a lot faster.
>>
>>29108085
F150 Lightning EV:
>32 minutes to charge from 15% to 80%
>200 mile range @ 75mph (72° and no grades).
So 2 hours charging (to get there) instead of 3.
Wow, such a better alternative....
>>
>>29108101
That's the 98kwh version and not the 131kwh one.
