Subaru dealer is charging $700 for a "30k mile service." Is this a ripoff? It looks like all they do is a regular oil change and tire rotation plus break fluids and the engine air filter.
Pic is from the web.
>>
>stealership
>stealing

color me surprised
>>
Should still be under warranty at 30k. Why would you pay for any of that when they'll do it for free? You can probably call Subaru and get them in trouble.

Wrenchlet
>>
I think maybe the brake fluid flush is the most expensive thing on there - its not just adding fluid they actually have to drain the old shit out so there's some labor involved. I had that done in the past year and I recall it was not cheap.
>>
price out each little shit thing to do individually, add it all up then multiply it by what it cost to pay a 'first world' labourer a couple hours @ livable wage and yeah it that what it cost to stay in business
>>
>>29103145
Average Subaru driver is a woman.
>>
I would value the brake flush at $100, the oil change at $50, the engine and cabin filter $40 (combined) and then no value at all to the other items. All these things besides the oil change and brake flush are things you should probably learn to do because they are basically on the same tier as the "put wiper fluid in" and "put bottle of fuel treatment in gas tank" on the list. Tire rotation is always free with oil change for me at an indie shop.

They are fleecing the shit out of you for being dumb and that is normal.

To add to this, if you wish to maintain your warranty just keep receipts. You don't HAVE to do that shit at the dealership. You would though have to have a receipt that you had these things done or at least purchased things like your airfilter.
>>
>>29103145
>air filters - $40
>oil filter + oil - $50
You figure it out

MULTI
POINT
INSPECTION

aka we do a two minute ocular inspection at some rust marks
>>
>>29103235
lol no they're actually pretty thorough inspections. the goal is to find every little thing wrong with the car so they can try to sell you extra service.
>>
>>29103217
And labor. They charge $120+ per hour of work, right??
>>
Pretty sure I did that and paid like $300 at an independent mechanic
>>
>>29103145
>Install winshield washer solvent

fucking lol
>>
>>29103211
an engine's worth of oil and the cheapest filter is $50, you're valuing the labor at $0. Shop rate is probably $160/hr or so, a quarter of which goes to the mechanic's salary and benefits, a quarter to the CEO and its cronies, and the remaining half to keep the building's lights on and pay business insurance and the bank.

my take, as cost to the shop:
>oil change $90
>rotate tires $40
>inspection $40
>fill washer $20
>fuel treatment $25
>cabin air filter $40
>engine air filter $40
>brake fluid $120
>battery service $90
the battery service takes a while, you have to take that thing out and clean it and brush up the terminals and spraycoat them, and vacuum up any corrosion crumblies in the tray too. I take a couple hours to do mine every 2 or 3 years, just because I take the time to neutralize everything with baking soda water and repaint anything that needs it.

So it costs the shop ~$500 to do all that shit, and they profit another $80. Not really that bad of a deal. Of course doing it all yourself saves a lot more.
>>
>>29103145
half that stupid is either a gimmick or you can do yourself in 10 minutes
>>
>>29103274
Last oil change I did was 0w20 pennzoil platinum ($35) with a $12 bosch filter. Definitely not the cheapest but mid-high tier for both. I don't believe in paying someone $25 to install a $15 airfilter but yes, I also did stuff previously like charge people $150 to install Windows on their PC.

The bigger the corp, the higher the cost of any given service, gotta pay the HR roasties. Works that way with banks too, always go as small as possible.

GDI servicing would be nice around 30K to remove carbon buildup on the valves. GDI can't be cleaned with cleaners in the gas tank. GDI doesn't spray the intake ports to clean those valves. Periodic use of GDI Intake Valve cleaner works to prevent build-up on the intake valves.

CRC Intake Valve Cleaner
http://www.crcindustries.com/products/gdi-ivd-174-intake-valve-cleaner-11-wt-oz-05319.html

Years ago, I asked my dealership what do they do for GDI cleaning. They said their normal approach is to spray a can of the intake cleaner as preventative measure to keep the buildup down. A spray can of this was 16oz at $13.20, but due to Biden inflation, the can is downsized to 11oz and is now $24. It probably takes 2 cans to do a real 2-part (one can each week for 2 weeks in a row) treatment now.

DIY is better since my local car dealership charges $350 to perform the same spray cleaning of carbon deposits. The $350 ripoff price is NOT for the manual cleaning where they remove the valve cover to manually scrape the carbon deposits. It's just $350 for applying this spray. I know it is a spray because I asked. Therefore, it's better to do it yourself and save the money.

Remember that these cleaning sprays are best used periodically as a preventative measure to keep buildup down. Just open up the air intake between the engine and the air filter box. Don't spray the MAF sensor which is why these cans have a built-in straw. You'll need a friend in the car to maintain a non-idle RPM of roughly 2K. You spray in one second bursts. It makes a lot of smoke, so if there is a slight breeze that day, be upwind.

Bmw oil change is 170 and 400 for brake fluid change.
>>
>>29103184
Service isnt included under 99% of warranties.
Thats like expecting them to pay for oil changes and tires.
>>

It's one of the most free things a tech can do.
>Fill external tank with fluid
>Remove reservoir cap
>Screw on tank adapter
>Attach air hose
>Open bleeder valve
>Walk away for a minute or two
>If fluid is clear close valve and repeat with the other three bleeders
>>
>>29103239
It's not just this, they also do it for liability. Plenty of mouth-breathing morons like to try and sue the dealer when it comes out the car had an issue, and they didn't check it because it was at the dealer for an oil change and a brake job.

>dealership
>maintenence on a car made after 2020
>vehicle manufacturer where you spend more in maintenence for the vehicle over ten years (if it lasts that long (it won't)) than the MSRP
you're getting ripped off in more than one way, friend-o
>>
>>29103307
For me it depends on how much of a bitch the filters are to get to. In my old Fiesta the cabin filter involved emptying and removing the glove box, wedging yourself awkwardly in the passenger foot well so you could reach around and unscrew a couple bolts you can't see (I also had to buy a finger driver for this) and then crumple forcing the new filter in the bay because some genius made the opening smaller than the filter.
I could do it again, but if I was old, uncoordinated, or fat, it'd be worth the 25 bucks.
>>
>>29103274
you're literally talking minutes for almost all of that shit. Given it's Subaru they'll probably just replace the shitty OEM battery with a new shitty OEM one under warranty, versus pull the thing out and suck on the terminals like they're the nipples of a prom date.
>>
>>29104135
don't forget the parts and machines and fluids aren't going to be right next to every single one of the 50+ repair bays at a large dealership. They're going to be on a shelf 50 feet away the tech has to walk to each time. Also the shop had to pay another guy to put the parts on the shelf, and a third person to order them, not to mention the delivery person who brought them to the shop. All those idiots need a boss too, and you pay for him as well.
>>
>>29103145
I paid $450 at mercedes because I thought the first maintenances under warranty was free. How are they charging more than a benz.

I bet you "fill" your car with gas as well. I install my gas when I go to the gas station.

Engine oil plus filter is about 35~50+7~20 depending on brand and tax.
Both air filters should add up to 20
Tire rotations are very straight forward and most tire shop give you free rotation if you buy the tires from them.
Brake fluid exchange is the only tricky one as you would need to bleed the system which is the only one I would recommand you let others handle if you don't have an extra pair of hands or speedbleeders.
The rest of those are made up.
