I know some people who worked at Ford when they did the tooling for it. They had the most experienced guys given time to do their best work on stuff like the the moulds for the taillights, the dies for the body panels, etc. They gave them the time and resources to get the fit and finish and the overall quality of the parts like that as good as Ford was able to do at the time. They never put that much into the rest of their cars.
