How fucked am I if I get in an accident with those things on? Surely the insulation alone provides some protection?

You're toast, Yum!
>>
>>29103928
No protection, but as with all things it depends on your risk tolerance and level of comfort. If I was in a small japanese town for example, putting around on a thumper, I probably wouldn’t wear anything but a helmet, if I was on the I95? I’d rather proper equipment. It should be situational. I personally have several sets of gear from “going 30mph tops to check the mail” (jeans, gloves, jeans jacket, helmet) to full gear for spirited rides or touring.

i thought i was clever, getting big gloves for small money. i think there is no cheat code for good gloves short of shoplifting them.

alright give me some input on this.
i've been watching fz6s for a couple months now. the price is nuts on this but it's clearly been kept outside. the chain is totally rusted and you can see rust on the fasteners on the rotors. paint looks faded from UV.
chain + sprockets, front and rear tires, probably brake fluid and lines, batter. maybe a grand all in, and it's still an fz6 that's sat outside for a while.

do i let this one go? i'm sure it will sell but i don't know if i want to fuck around with this.

full faced helmet, you dont want your chin exposed when you kiss the concrete.
one piece leather suit if you go racing on tracks. some have that mandatory.
if not a 2piece zipper suite. much more easier and convenient for resting, taking a break, have some non bike activities during a day of riding.

chain + sprockets, maybe. If the O-rings are all there and the sprocket teeth don't look like ocean waves than maybe not.
Tires if they are old or worn. Brake fluid probably has never been changed, so change it. Oil change tool.
Then ride it. Bikes are expected to survive the weather.

I am once again asking: Is there any consensus on the r7? I’ve only ridden screamers (90s cbr600 was my first bike) so I’m not sure if the p-twin will be gay feeling or not. Does 270 crank make a difference? Or is it still just gay and slow? Have p-twins really become decent? Half the spark plugs to worry about is a nice proposition.

I replied to you earlier in this thread, maybe you didn't see it.
It's gonna be slower than a 600. Full stop. It only revs to 11000. However, power comes on at 3 and doesn't really stop pulling until 8, so you can shift anywhere north of 8 and you'll be fine. It's a closer ratio transmission than an MT07 which is based. It has much better brakes and suspension than an MT07, which is based. The stock exhaust sounds legitimately awful and it needs a pipe and a tune to actually bark. It's still fast enough to pass anyone you want, it's just more linear and predictable. The motor sounds best between 3-5000 RPM in my opinion. Excellent streetbike motor.

they're good bikes. plenty of fun. having to rev for your power gets annoying for daily use, which is why every screamer eventually gets re-tuned for torque.
if you're racing in displacement based classes or larping as someone that does it's better to get a 636 or something.
but if you're not they're fun sporty wheelie machines

My fairings are fucked. I've been riding my 04 R6 since I got it with no side fairings for years. I had to park outside for a year and got a ton of sun damage all over. Last month my gf backed into it getting out of her parking spot and tipped it over, breaking the turn signal hole and fucking up the front cowl. I had to remove and reinstall the fairing stay. THEN two fucking weeks later I did the same thing and rebroke it, but on the other side so I fucked the other turn signal and had to install ANOTHER fairing stay.

All this to ask: Should I get a fairing kit? I installed one on my ninja 250 years back and liked it, anyone recently use and can recommend a website to order from? Thanks

We both know they will either cheap out on the suspension or the seat. Probably the cruise control will not be there as well. If I had to bet, I'd say both suspension will be the cheapest on the market 40mm without adjustments, and the seat will be the worst seat on the market with an option to buy a better one but still meh honda seat from the factory like they did on touring CB1000GT.

Anon if you laugh at something it does not mean you also hate it.

Pisstwins are fine if used as a cheap engine replacement for the cheap motorcycles, then it's fair play. However that's not what happened. The manufacturers tried to push the cheap alternative on bigger bikes to increase the revenue, and people hated it because how shitty the engine was. After couple of failures manufacturers didn't want to give up on the idea and changed the fire intervals to mimic the sound of V-twins. Some weak minded people were ready to consume whatever they were given if it sounded nice for the same price of a proper engine. Basically it was a trick by manufacturers, you got fooled and now you are being a perfect consoomer, even defending their jew practices.

The conclusion is do not try to pretend to be something you are not, or you will look like a fool. Sorry for my English, it's my 3rd language.

Is there any normal people ITT that has / have a Ducati 1098?

It's pretty much the only bike that company makes that catches my attention but I'm the type of guy to actually fucking ride the thing and fix the thing if needed.

What's ownership like? What problems does the 1098 have? Are said problems resolvable in the name of reliability? I'm not interested in a fragile paperweight that sits in a glass box 11/12 months a year.

From the uninitiated perspective, I assume there'll be a dry clutch tax cuz they wear out fast and then there's belts to be dealt with and I think the dumbass valves as well right?

We talkin comical levels of cost to maintain or just slightly above average?
Appreciate the authentic replies.

Knocking sound is pretty on par with other videos I heard altough mine sounds just a little more worse.

Previous owner was an old man who just said yeah that goes away when its warm. Figured it was an exhaust leak, which it did have but I fixed with a dominator exhaust.

I would easily wager that whoever had that before never serviced the brake fluid correctly. CCTs are an issue but easy to resolve. Charging systems shit the bed on all Y2K era bikes. Aside from that and the brake fluid being bled correctly (it's critical, otherwise you'll lock up the rear wheel when you tap the rear brake)

Honda made an updated part number for their CCT's back in the Y2K era. If you go for hydraulic cct swap, get the updated number not the original or you can go solid cam chain tensioner but you'll need to check it / adjust it every oil change (roughly)

That's a lot, I'm pretty sure I almost never see one over 35-40k km on the marketplaces. Probably for a good reason. I mean you can let the shop repair its engine, most likely the chain and tensioners. The worst thing could be worn out camshaft and the bearings on it.

I was definitely going for the updated chain tensioner.
Rear brake and front brake work perfectly fine. Not as much bite as my street Triple R but for floating rotors they're quite good.

I already ordered a haynes manual or whatever its called. Saved my ass on my old bandit.

Get the OEM one or don't get one at all.
Also, bookmark this video. It's for a hurricane but the channel has a 5th gen vfr bleed procedure. It's essentially the same excluding a ABS unit. If it feels fine, good but you need to do it every 2 years tops.
https://youtu.be/El6MQ40HIWk

Sintered pads help with bite, updated tensioner will make it sing. The VFR is a very good bike, built like a tank.

Interesting. From what I researched so far the main problems is pasta power electrical gremlins (charging system is next to the exhaust, wire harness is short and rubs on pieces, headlight low beam harness is whack)

All of which seems very fixable aside from charging location, but idk. Would cherish a real rider / wrench input from personal experiences. They're neat, but I don't think I got enough incentive to pursue one actively

That was in turn because people started high-volume crapflooding /pol/ in 2016 and have continued to do so for the next decade, so you've got like 20 minutes to post the next thread before it archives. Emissions rules are favoring fewer cylinders. Fuel trapped under the top ring becomes either unburned hydrocarbons or oxides of nitrogen. Less cylinders means less trapped fuel.
The R7 isn't bad, per se, it's just slow compared to an R6 and since it looks and otherwise feels like an R6, that's what it gets compared to.
Nothing wrong with P-twins really other than the piss twin meme here.
Maybe get an sv650 or the xsr900 retro and the fairing kit or something. Dunno what kind of power you want, sv is comfy power delivery.

An eBay fairing stay is about $50. I just installed a kit from gomototrip because they're the only people who made my oem colorway. It's not perfect, but it's decent enough for my bike. It was kind of a pain in the ass, but that's because i started with a bike that didn't have any fairings. You'll have to massage it a little bit and oblong the holes with a small jewelers file here and there. It's easy if you have all your parts and can work backward. Gixxerbrah has a discount code in the descriptions of all of his videos for a company called monsterfairing. If you need fasteners, I like stainless. The Aluminum ones are too easy to fuck up. I bought a kit from ebay for $30.

They do nothing on a boxer bike, you need proper crash bars and pretty damn wide ones to boot.
In a flathead Soviet, the cylinder head is the first one to hit the ground if it falls over.
>>
I bought a 750cc bike as my first a couple month ago and got a lot of shit for it from other bikers. They all claimed it was too much for a beginner and that i would crash or die. They tried to convince me to get a 250 or 400. After putting about 2k miles on it I feel like they were all wrong and gay. I've had a great time and feel the 750 is a perfectly manageable machine. Why is this gayness so prevalent in the community? Is it just homo gatekeeping?

Nah, if you drop a flathead, the cylinder head will still be the first thing to touch ground. Despite the head being empty, they're still pretty damn wide engines.

>Acting like someone is going to sit on a 750 and immediately obliterate themselves is gay histrionics.
It happens all the time whether you want to believe it or not. Besides, 750cc means nothing if you don't mention what kind of bike it is. A Kawasaki W800 (which is 800cc) makes a whopping 47hp while weighing almost 500lbs, meanwhile a 600cc sport bike can push 120hp while weighing 400lbs so the power to weight ration needs to be taken into account. Most new riders cannot handle that kind of power. You have (so far) so congratulations, just don't get over confident because it will bite you in the ass.

oh no

BMWs with shaft drives are extreme turbo hard mode for DIY maintenance. You will want to take it to the dealer for at least a once-over the next time the service warning comes on.
>>
>>29106225
I got completely opposite impression honestly, it has the central stand and basically everything can be accessed from there with simple tools. The seller, who got for himself the same bike but newer model, said you can do that but bring it to a service like once every three years or so.

About the shaft I think it's relatively easy, the questions are in details like the exact type of grease to use on the shaft etc, which is probably described in service manual that I don't have.

>>
>>29106224
With militsia or "10" final drive you can reach 150kmh or so without a tub, but you will wreck the engine at that point.
I blew a piston, cracked a cylinder and bent a conrod doing 140kmh on mine. Basically everything in the engine was trashed, only the camshaft survived.
A safe top speed is like 80kmh with militsia and higher final drive gearing, with regular civilian gearing it's like 60kmh especially with a sidecar.

They're no means fast bikes, the OHV engines like to sit at 3-3.5K rpm as anything above that runs the risk of twisting the crank.
750 sidevalves are a bit safer at 4k rpm, but good luck getting one there.
750 ohv engknes are also safer to rev out and they're surprisingly rev happy engines too with their CV carbs, still they like to sit at around 4k rpm tops

Depends on the bike. A Honda NC750 has 750cc and 50hp. A VFR750 has 750cc and 100hp a GSX-R has 750cc and 150hp.
NC and VFR are optimal, and plausible, respectively, for a beginner. A gsxr750... rather not.

Same goes for 600. Not every 600 is a pissmissile
>>29106140
>Why is this gayness so prevalent in the community? Is it just homo gatekeeping?
depends what the community associates with the number. but there are more 600 pissmissles than 600c high torque low hp cruisers.

Ninja zx4rr only has 400cc but its also not really a great bike for a beginner. i4 Gotta know how to ride with momentum and high rpm.

Tarp is the best. If you have a cool Ducati or BMW cover, you are advertising that you have a cool bike underneath. Tarp, you have to guess if it's a bike or not. Tarp all the way!!

How good do chyna bikes have to be for you to accept the new overlords?
>>

I've seen Chang Jiang M1 live, that one is okay even though I wasn't impressed by the build quality. It was rough even by my standards
>>

>How good do chyna bikes have to be for you to accept the new overlords?
Unironical answer for chinks: when they stop copying existing motorcycles and engines (like Kawasaki KLX 300 in this case), start providing service intervals comparable to Japanese and German gods, keep the new parts stock for 10 years for each model like Japanese and German gods, and at the same time give a warranty that includes said parts and labor costs + cost less than Japanese and German bikes. Japanese did manage to do exactly that to overcome British, German and American sellers. You want to call yourself overlord? At least try to beat Japanese in that first.
>>
>>29106943
Understandable.
However,
> keep the new parts stock for 10 years for each model
this is exactly the thing that makes the established manufacturers resort to "bold new graphics" instead of actively innovating.

One underdiscussed reason why starting on a liter bike or jumping right to a liter bike after being on a beginner bike can lead to bad crashes is that you drastically underestimate how much speed you can gather between two corners. And it depends on the 750, of course. you could be talking anywhere from 50 to 125 ish horses. Nobody think "there is a 100% chance you will kill yourself starting on a big bike." The chance you kill yourself, or the chance you kill your riding by scaring yourself or because it's more to deal with than you were ready for, are much much higher. "I bought a literbike and then low sided and almost got badly hurt so I don't ride anymore" is very common.

>>29106140
>>
>>29106140
Probably because the stats say so. New riders on bigger bikes are more likely to get into a fatal crash. A couple months and 2k miles is also not enough to make a judgement either.
I'm glad you haven't had an incident but calling people gay because they didn't want you to die shows me your attitude, and it's not the kind that survives long on a bike

Curious to see the noob rider stats by age. For example if you take 1000 new riders aged up to 24yo and 1000 new riders aged 25-60yo, how many in each group get into an accident. It might be that the problem lies in young unexperienced retards, and not just unexperienced people.
>>
>>29107052
You're probably onto something and that's why the EU regulation doesn't let you buy a litre bike until you're 24
>>
>>29107052
I am 34 with a spotless driving record so maybe that has something to do with it. I respect the power of any vehicle I have ever drove or ridden.
>>
>>29107055
There is a way to get full, unrestricted licence in EU as young as 20
You have to start with licence that restricts you to something like 50 hp (I'm not sure, but it's around that) when you are 18 and then you can get unrestricted once you are 20, so you can't start fresh on a liter bike before you are 24, but you can get it at 20 when you have already been riding.
>>
>>29107022
If someone is overconfident enough to crash their shit then they are more than likely gonna do the same on a smaller one. It isnt about the power it is about the maturity of the rider.
>>
>>29107092
Retard, you are retarded.
>small bike
>apply slightly too much throttle between corners
>gather a bit more speed than you want
>have plenty of time to realize youve made a mistake and correct it
vs
>liter bike
>apply slightly too much throttle in the corner
>gather way more speed than you want
>don't have enough time to realize you've made a mistake and correct
>crash

The same mistake is more consequential on a faster machine than a slower machine. Confidence has nothing to do with it. When you're learning to operate machinery you make mistake with the inputs.
>>
>>29106140
>After putting about 2k miles on it I feel like they were all wrong and gay
They are wrong and gay but so are you. 2k miles is barely any real mileage, you'll eat shit eventually when you get complacent from being too comfortable. Most bikers don't crash during their first year unless they're very uncoordinated, it's the second year noob trap to watch for, when they're fully cocky thinking they know how to ride when they're still just a beginner. Riding can feel natural after only a month but mastering the bike takes a lifetime

previous 2003 VFR owner. I loved the shit out of my VFR but holy shit was it a never ending headache of gremlins and problems. but it was worth it just to hit VTEC power band on a daily basis. especially the 03 as it has a more aggressive VTEC than models after.
>presumably CCT
yeah it would 100% be the CCT. I would replace them when you can.
>voltage regulator
Get used to replacing this part, especially if you own the VFR for a long time. I can probably replace a regulator/stator on a VFR with my eyes closed now.
The VFR is plagued with a lot of electrical issues as well. Thermostat issues, wiring harness issues and electrical shorts. Get used to taking off those plastics and removing your fuel tank because you'll be doing it a lot.

>brake fluid being bled correctly.
This is a huge problem. Ive had this happened to me from previous owner. rear brake calliper locked up and melted. it was insane. Cost me like $2000 AUD to get the whole brake system re done because it was old, neglected and not done properly.
>>
>>29107096
Shouldnt be trying to corner hard when they cant control their throttle input. Idk why you keep bringing up liter bikes when the original comment was talking about a 750cc 80hp bike.

If Gemini is to be believed, the average motorcycle fatality in the US is a 43 year old who has been drinking. Ages 25 through 29 kill themselves with speed, but apparently much lower than the rate of middle aged bar hoppers. 55+ riders are the least likely to crash, but have higher rates of death per crash because they're already halfway dead to begin with. All of this makes sense to me, honestly.
>>
I can't stand it any longer, I need to ride a bike, my school's learner bikes are out of commission because some retard broke them, and knowing how lazy people are in my country this could take a long time for me to get my full license.
Since I already have a car's driver licence, I'm legally able to ride a small 125cc bike without any school, I'm thinking of buying something second hand and just learn to drive it as I go. I don't care anymore.

>the average motorcycle fatality in the US is a 43 year old who has been drinking
See there's a problem with stats like this. They specify an average or one number, which is not the same of a percentage in different groups. The reason why it might be true according to gemini is because the average Joe in the us starts riding much older and there's simply much more older riders than younger ones. That's why I explicitly asked the question that way in order to normalize the number among different groups of riders.
>>

A 125 might be less fun than a bigger bike, but it's way more fun than driving the average car. A bike is a bike and it's good practice

What sort of advice can you give someone who has never touched a bike before?
>>
>>29107167
21-29 have the highest total accident rate while 50-59 have the highest fatality rate relative to total population.
>>
>>29107196
start on quiet roads, take your time, find somewhere to do slow control practice (slower is harder than going fast).
When you start you will mostly be learning the clutch and pulling away. Start small and work your way up. You will only have a problem if you jump on it and immediately start riding like a lunatic. And watch twist of the wrist.
>>
>>29107196
Professor Youtube has lots of instruction videos that you can use.
>>
>>29107143
Its the same problem in principle, the slower the bike the larger the margin. 50hp gives you a wider margin than 80hp gives you a wider margin than 120hp gives you a wider margin than 150hp.
There's a reason about 50hp is usually the limit in most countries for beginner bikes, because that's where the margin is acceptably wide for the level of skill that beginners have.
Your proposed solution is literally
>just don't make mistakes
Kill yourself, faggot

>>29107182
Statistically we have many reasons to expect risk of fatal injury has major tail effects.

>>29107170
Buy a 125 then, 125s are a lot of fun
>>
>>29107211
My solution is to take it easy and be honest with yourself about your skill and what you realistically should attempt and not attempt. I guess if youre an impulsive faggot with zero self-control that is difficult, but that's why someone like that is going to crash regardless of power.
>>
>>29107211
>Buy a 125 then, 125s are a lot of fun
What I'm wondering is how hard the move from 125 to 600 is, since in my country you can already take a full license after being 25 y/o without going through the process of A1>A2>A and the schools will teach you how to ride a bike from the very beginning.
But since the 125 learner bike from my school got wrecked by some fat ass chick and it's been a month since this happened and they haven't fixed the bike yet, I'm considering buying one of my own to learn and ride and then ask to ride their 600s bikes they have.
But going from 125 to 600 and back, isn't that a problem?
>>
>>29107218
You are so retarded its unbelievable.
There are many things you could realistically attempt that BECOME something YOU SHOULD NOT ATTEMPT because you MAKE A MISTAKE.
An ordinary curve in the road can become you whiskey throttling into oncoming traffic if you MAKE A MISTAKE. Retard, retard retard. This has nothing to do whatsoever with self control.
>>
>>29107228
Who knew throttle control was some le epic secret to riding that takes years to master lmao.
>>
>>29107235

Isn't there statistics that shows % of all accidents because of speeding?
I can't find the direct number here in Germany, but I calculated it from the data to be 11.2% of all accidents. Does it mean having extremely weak motorcycle reduces the risk of you dying only by that small fraction?
>>
>>29107290
In the U.S. about 1% of motorcycles are involved in a crash each year. Within that total pool of accidents, speeding is the primary cause in approximately 28% to 29% of all crashes.

I fucked up in my calculations and didn't take into account speeding in accidents between cars and motorcycles. The correct number would be about 18% in Germany, however the statistics does not specify if it was car or motorcycle speeding, it just says "speeding" as a reason. I've counted them in.

To get the amount of speed you want on a slow bike, you might need to crack the throttle 1/4 turn. If you overshoot by 50%, 1/8 of a turn extra, literally twist the throttle more than you wanted, you're going to go faster, but not so much faster that you'll probably get in trouble.
On a much faster bike, in that same easy corner, to get the speed you want, you might need to only open the throttle 1/8 of a turn. Now that same 1/8 of a turn mistake has doubled the amount of throttle, and you're really cooking with gas, now you're in trouble.
You didn't do anything wrong except for the throttle. You knew how much speed you needed, you knew what was coming up. Your execution failed.
It's easy for a beginner to fail to input the right amount of throttle, beginners rarely are giving the just right amount, but they're on slow bikes, so the margin is wide. It's easy even for an intermediate rider to be disturbed by road conditions - an undulation in the road that couldn't be seen, or someone throwing something out of a car window, or any number of things - and miss a throttle input. But they're better at it and intermediate bikes aren't SO much faster, so they can probably compensate. Advanced riders are disturbed by fewer changes, and have more accurate inputs in the face of these changes.

My zx14r had the best throttle response, powerband, smoothness, and everything that i liked
My crf450rl kicks like a fucking mule and ive put a flywheel weight and throttle tamer tube innit as well as tuned ecu for torque
Eveb though my crf maxes out at 170kph, the gearing and power to weight is so obnoxiously different between the two bikes
Ninja also had traction control and weighs 2x as much, so that offered greater stability
The seating position and ergonomics for the crf alao favour throwing your ass off the seat if youre not anticipating the front end

Of all the bikes ive ridden, the zx14r has to be the best one for everything except for the fuck fairings factor

Miss ridin that huge nibba lol; Shooms so fasy

Don't run tubeless on off-road wheels unless it's Tubliss. You want the ability to run low pressures, goop method won't keep the beads of the tire pressed very hard into the wheel when you're running 8-11PSI.

got an 1198 used - maintenance is noticeably more expensive but not insanely so. desmo service and belts are a pain, but just pay attention to the service intervals and you should be fine.

I'd be more concerned about buying one in the first place - lots of these things have been neglected over the years, clapped out and sold right before the expensive desmo service is needed, so shop around and do your homework. A good example will often have aftermarket goodies like termi pipes so you can find some money there.

Good luck and godspeed, fellow Ducatista!
