Its widely considered the best engine EVER. What does /o/ think about it?

>Its widely considered the best engine EVER.
Source? It's okay I guess, had one in the early 0s and it did its job in hauling the wifoid around without any issues.
Ended up boosting it to around 200hp or so (claimed) with a bigger pump, cooler and turbo.
>>
>>29104894
One of very few cases where the engine is basically guaranteed to last longer than the car its put inside of. Regularly see them for sale with 3, 4, 500 thousand miles. Timing belts and occasional injection pump rebuilds are all they need to keep running forever, and in fact you ran run these with no electronics at all.
>>
>>29104894
I think you posted the wrong one, the ALH is the reliable one

THIS

Gas Babies cant comprehend an engine that gives it's native car 50mpg while lasting to a million miles without any rebuilds
>>

Was gonna say
My post was contingent on op talking about the ALH and not the BEW. They are the same displacement.
>>
>>29104943
>a million miles
Who really gives a shit?
Average yearly mileage in europe is 7,000. In the U.S. its 14,000.
Why the fuck do you care if the engine will last 140 years?
Are you going to drive the same rusted out piece of shit from high school to your funeral?
Theyre 100% poorfag cope. (You) NEED 50mpg because paying an extra 40 bucks at the pump is enough to cause you to be short on rent.
>>
the idle sound is very pleasing and they feel very nice to drive. however I hate vagshit so I'll keep driving inline 6 ws and classic mercedes-benzes
>>

There's like 100 different variations of these. What is the best one for a mechanical injection conversion?
>>
>>29104989
ALH already has a mechanical injection pump
>>
>>29104894
>Its widely considered the best engine EVER
By euros. Like it or not, America has the widest variety of currently produced engines sold and always has. Over here, it's known to be good, but isn’t in the top 5. LS, 2JZ, 6BT, K20, SBC, Ford 7.3, ect are far more deserving of the title.
>>
>>29104990
Not quite, it’s a VE at heart but they removed the mechanical governor system and replaced it with an injection quantity controller, it’s called a VP37, they can be converted to manual but it’s a massive undertaking which requires multiple pumps to be cannibalized, better off just getting a rover 300tdi pump
>>
>>29104997
>7.3ps
I wouldn’t include any engine that uses unit injectors in a reliability ranking unless it’s gonna be near the bottom
>>
>>29104987
This entirely depends on what you want to drive. Some millionaires Drive toyota. Some Drive range rovers. Some put the trophy wife into a Lambo urus. Having a lot of money just means you have access to all the options.
>>
>>29104999
The 7.3 does a zillion miles and you fucking know it

Yeah unless its the one with unit injectors. How did everyone convince themselves that worse fuel consumption, failing injectors, injector seats getting loose left and right, camshafts made of some kind of swiss cheese are signs of a great engine is beyond my comprehension.

I was in an uber once in a manual vw idk what engine it was but it was the only time ive been in a car and actually thought wow this car sounds terrible. it sounded like the engine didnt match the transmission or something. it didnt sound like a vacuum cleaner because it actually made a lot of noise like it was struggling in an annoying way similar to a vacuum cleaner. i dont really see many vw cars around but i like the sound of the vr6. whatever they are putting in their other cars probably your op engine was the only time ive ever heard a car sound terrrible. normally not a good sounding car is just quiet or vaccumy not genuinely bad.
>>
>>29105540
>a manual vw idk what engine it was but it was the only time ive been in a car and actually thought wow this car sounds terrible
Yep.
Thats the engine this thread is about.
>>
I've been seriously thinking about swapping one of these into my Suzuki Samurai. Only major issue is the gearing on the zuki drive train is so low that the VW would be red lining at 65mph. I've looked around and can't find taller gearing for the diffs. I know it's a fairly popular swap in Samurai's, but I want to be able to drive to the trails, not tow to them. I also like driving it around town.
>>
>>29105586
Neighbor has a 350 sbc samurai.
Its the most common in my world.
Why would you do some a 1.9 when better options exist?
>>
>>29105586
increase your tire diameter
>>
>turbo diesel lasts a long time
stop the press!!!!!!!!
>>
>>29105600
Because I want to keep the vehicle as light as possible and I dont want to spend the money upgrading everything else. Much more than 130hp and you have to replace the transmission, diffs, axles and upgrade the suspension to handle the extra weight.

What makes the Samurai such a capable off roader is it's light weight, they are only 2200lbs. Most of the offroading in my area involves a lot of sand, and the Sammi is so light I rarely even have to put it in 4wd. All the jeep guys are in 4wd as soon as they hit the sand.
>>
>>29105809
I'm considering it, but to get much more tire under it I would need to lift it. I dont mind a minor lift, but I like using it as a semi daily driver and too much lift makes it terrible on paved roads.

You gas babies always get so asshurt when diesel bros bring that up. There are several small shops in my area that advertise on Facebook Marketplace that their waste oil is free.

One time I spilled a a few gallons in front of my home. The EPA did show up and asked me about it. I told them I was running it as fuel and they told me it was okay as long as I didn't make a mess.

I'm that autistic fuck I been looking for a clean 92-97 5 window Aerobody Crown Vic to be the donor car. A few years ago someone dropped a Cummins 4BT into a whale (1998-2011). It's still on YouTube. I believe the man claimed like 32 or 35mpg highway and that just sounds good to me. I'm sure you could bump that up higher with a different engine or gear ratio. Certainly better than the 19mpg I would consistently get with the several P71s I've owned.

I bet the TDI would be better, I know a guy with a square body with a 4bt swap and he gets 19mpg, which I thought was a bit low because my 6bt truck gets 20-24 empty, I think the 1.9 would be better suited to a car than the 4bt, also lighter and smaller which is always nice

Changing your friends oil and taking that 7 quarts home to store in a drum in your garage to burn later in a vehicle or space heater is 100% legal.
Ive never said otherwise.
Bur you can not go to jiffy lube or autozone and haul off their used oil, not even 1 gallon. That hazmat exemption is when an end user is disposing of 2 gallons. Once autozone is in possession of it its hazardous waste and is an accountable item.
Hauling a 55 gallon drum full.of oil is illegal. And so is drunk driving. You've probably done both.
Nobody on this forum has access to enough used oil to make it worthwhile.
The cute little larp about "i run my diesel on used oil!!" when in reality it was 1% of your fuel consumption is disingenuous
>>
>>29106998
I've literally pulled barrels from shops because they have advertised on Marketplace that they had free oil. The best source are small detail shops that only clean cars and do basic oil changes. The chances of getting contaminated oil are a lot smaller
>Pull up in 7.3 IDI.
>Use their pump to fill both my fuel tanks.
Cool, now this 55 barrel is about 30.
>forklift it int onto my bed.

Fun fact I actually worked at a Jiffy Lube part time to supplement my income. The recycling company that was supposed to empty their tanks dident want to come for a few weeks. I ended up harvesting the oil from the fresh oil changes and would just keep it for myself. Manager said okay so why not?

You just love shitting on people. It's not like the EPA patrols the street and checks people's cars and trucks for waste oil. Not like local police give a shit.

You dont have to run an 800hp monster LS.
The point was that people think a 4 banger is a fraction of the weight of a V8 and thats just not true.
You could run the Buick/Rover V8 and have a 4.6L for 50 pounds LESS than the TDI.
>>
>>29107423
I dont think you are comprehending how little power the zuke drive train can take. A stock 5.3 LS is way too much power for it. Even a stock 2.0l K series is pushing what that drive train can handle.
