Is it theoretically possible to route solar power directly into a car battery by attaching the leads to the car battery + and - points?
Yes but you'll want to get a charge converter to not destroy your battery.
>>29106173>route solar power directly into a car battery by attaching the leads to the car battery + and - points? All those 0.0001 milliamps? Sure
>>29106185Just was curious if it was actually possible in this time of high gas prices.
>>29106184So Solar Panel to wire to charge converter to wire to car battery?
Just get a solar battery charger. They are great for trailers or other stuff that sits a long time between uses that still need to be kept charged. It should also work for your car. Keep in mind solar is fucking slow.
>>29106206I see, you're joking.
>>29106213Cool.
>>29106206what does a car battery have to do with gas prices?
>>29106173This exists in some EVs. It's kinda overrated.>1.3kWh a day parking under the sun from 8am till 6pm
>>29106277Someone’s clearly trying to Hybrid his ordinary car instead of paying tons for an actual EV, lol. Probably a redneck who welds in his garage.
>>29106173It’s not just theoretical.Right now for $40 you can get a 12v/20w charger that plugs into your lighter socket and keeps your battery charged when you’re not driving it.The future is now old man.
>>29106173no, most solar panels create very low voltage and will be overcome by the voltage of a "dead" but still functional car battery. With some extra circuitry though, sure. you can just buy solar battery chargers that implement step-up transformers and maybe even have a diode in there somewhere to charge it up with low current but appropriate voltage.
>>29106310It's the NEET's dream tho.>buy clunker ass EV with a battery that still sorta holds 20kwh>buy 300 dollars worth of solar panels>let car sit in the sun since you can't afford a garage anyway>never have to pay for fuel because all your car need for is getting groceries once a week and in that week it gets charged for free under the sun
>>2910637520 watts is fucking nothing. That would take 2500 hours to charge a 50kwh battery
>>29106439>50kwhit's for a car battery. like the 12v that just gets your starter on. that shit is for shit like keeping your ATV from dying, not for a tesla. you are deranged
>>29106439No capacity or speed requirements were given.SO GET FUCKED!
>>29106173Nothing stopping you OP.
>>29106173Yeah but there's a lot of ways to fuck it up and one to do it right. If you have to ask a question like this, hire a competent professional. It would be pointless on a basic car battery as the alternator generates enough power to keep it charged. It would also be pretty much pointless on an EV or PHEV because of the energy demand. Solar is very slow to generate electricity, and you need ideal sun exposure and lots of space for panel coverage. A car roof of solar panels is jack shit, you could charge about a car battery sized battery and keep a mini fridge running all day and night. Now think how many car battery sized batteries are in a Tesla. Basically the entire floor. So you really couldn't expect a full charge in any reasonable amount of time from such a tiny amount of solar panel coverage.I did the math for it when pondering an EV SHTF rig. It's actually not bad for a scenario where liquid fuel runs completely dry. You would be able to drive it to the vehicle's full range (200-300 miles) then have to park for about a week while you charge it with a good sized solar panel blanket. So you camp for a week during your long distance bugout. Here's the more realistic part though, you typically don't drive 200-300 miles and run out your entire battery in a day. If you were just going around town to the grocery store, a roof sized solar panel charging for ~6-8 hours a day (more if you run it on an auto tilter to follow the sun) can likely provide enough captured energy to run your vehicle indefinitely without plugging it in. Reason this hasn't been done is because a solar panel does jack shit for commutercucks who have to drive 100 miles a day. The car is designed to be plugged in and left overnight, and it's already cheap to do that.
>>29106683As far as finding the right professional, van life rig builders know a lot about solar, and specifically how to make it charge Tesla batteries which are used in a lot of rigs. There's van builders all around the country, at varying degrees of questionable workmanship...
>>29106683To put it into perspective, it took this guy 3 of these size panels to make an "infinity power" ebike, just so he could ride it at like 15mph indefinitely. Granted it didn't look that sunny on the day he tested it. In most states people don't even bother with rooftop solar panels, even though a house has plenty of space to mount a good amount of panels, because there isn't enough sun to make them really efficient year round. Then you get desert states like Arizona and Nevada where it's stupid not to get solar and you can run your whole house on it, charge your battery banks fully, and even get paid to send energy to the grid for others to use. It's a wash, oh and you gotta keep the panels washed.
>>29106689
>>29106310batteries love to be trickled though so even if you're not getting much free charge its keeping your battery pack healthy
>>29106386There's free chargers almost everywhere. They're only level 2.
>>29106207Yes
>>29106683a neighbor of mine bought a (by our standards) extremely expensive ev but he has like 10kWh of solar or something stupid like that (we live in brazil so we have a shitton of sun) and because he commutes 100km a day the fucker is on track to get a roi in ~4 yearsall that while also paying $0 for a power bill with AC on 24/7 in his homeit's crazy and the only temptation i have to buy a slopmobile ev. the financials are there, the lack of engine is the only deterrent
>>29107229What's your experience and opinion for ethanol fuel?
>>29107269it's widespread here and you can find it at every gas station; remapping for ethanol (with some minor modifications if your car doesn't come flexfuel from the factory) can give you seriously stupid performance gains.i had a 2011 wrx hatchback with 440whp on ethanol, up from 320whp on high octane gasoline.it's pretty bonkers.for daily, non-performance use, it's less obvious. because of this retarded iran war gas prices are through the roof and the govt has allowed 32%-ethanol-mix gasoline to be sold as gasoline, which sucks ass for non-flexfuel cars (e.g. imports) and increases consumption. (ethanol is higher octane but less power dense)overall i'm pro-ethanol because it's an essentially renewable resource but i don't like the way the govt is forcing it down our throats to shrinkflate away the gas prices going up due to the iran war by mixing it with a completely different fuel.
>>29107318E85 has an effective octane of 110. So, obviously you can push more boost and aggressive timing with it. The only gasoline that is higher than 110 is leaded. For daily use it's irrelevant, the cost per mile is the same. Only reason to use it for daily driving is ideological in that it's home-grown (good) and has significantly smaller carbon footprint (good).
>>29106206You people will do anything but buy a ev lol
>>29107342If you are mixing oil with ethanol it also lowers dependency on oil. Which is nice because basedbeans or whatever they make the ethanol from can be grown in most places that aren't desert or snow. It makes your economy more independent.
>>29106386You have been away from the NEET game for a while. Now it's just>order groceries off amazon and get free shipping>spend more time shitposting on 4chins
