besides subaru front overhang monster system there is nothing better. like what the fuck is all this uneven axle shit, or axle through oil pan with the engine jacked the fuck up man get the fuck out of here. its all a mistake.
>>
Part time 4x4 is the best, with a mechanical transfer, mechanical lever, manual front wheel hubs and manual gearbox.
>>
>>29107492
Not bad, similar to my Suzuki.

Suzi is a slant 4 so front driveshaft goes closer to the center than pic shows
>>
it aint matter
>>
>>29107702
why is the driveshaft curved to fit into the rear engine? that seems like it would be really bad for long term stability
>>
>>29107492
>uneven axle shit, or axle through oil pan
who cares? it doesn't make any difference
you're probably the same faggot who spergs about mcdonalds all day like it fucking matters

idk probably to avoid some resonance in the U joints.
the older lamborgs have their propshaft underneath the crankshaft, Center of gravity be dammed.
>>
>>29107705
the shaft is balanced so it won't affect anything. driveshafts are usually at an angle even if it's just 1° because as it spins the needle rollers in the spider bearings all spin too and even out the wear, as well as spreading grease around
>>
>>29107711
The propshaft is pretty much inline with the crank, it isn't compromising center of mass much if at all.

>what the fuck is all this uneven axle shit, or axle through oil pan with the engine jacked the fuck up man get the fuck out of here

umm bro
What do you think is happening here?
>>
>>29107705
something about driveshafts being perfectly straight causes issues
>>
how is the evo x system? and is something like a haldex 3 or 4 from a volvo s40 even worth having? i know whatever awd in the volvo 850s nowadays none of them are hooked up and everyone runs them fwd cuz its too expensive to maintain for hundreds of thousands of miles.
>>
BMW solved AWD with xDrive.
>>
>>29107721
They wear the uni bearings if there's zero rotation and it just sits there hammering the same spot
>>
>>29107502
>wheel hubs
You don’t need those, that’s just a MPG issue, millions of solid axle jeeps are on the road with no locking hubs, the axle is always engaged, you only switch the transfer case
>>
>>29107502
>mechanical
>mechanical
>manual
>manual
What does it matter if the driveshaft goes to the diff at a weird angle and the front left axle is a different length compared to the right? It's all a huge mess.
>>
>>29107779
i learned things today
thanks anons

Trash design. This Subaru system is the purest one. I don't even shill Subarus it just hit me today.

Could have sworn I was already looking at them in this picture of the drivetrain. They look nice and equal length and symmetrical.

Omg I see it now. Okay so there's no pure awd systems. It's all a bunch of rube goldberg cope shit.

That looks pretty bad I don't like it. I only like the Subaru one but I just found out that's crooked too
>>

it is pretty bad but it's cool in its own quirky way

ultimate awd
>>

I wonder if anyone has ever build a vehicle which has a radial engine inside the wheel
>>
>>29107853
Ah yep
>>
>>29107853
I'm 100% sure I've seen some one off prototypes like that

looks bad

Paul Moller makes some tiny rotors that seem sort of that size.

>>

Draw one that doesn't and i will pick bone with it
>>

because it sits on a different rotational axis and doesnt fuck with the rest of the engine
>>
>>29107852

>>29107860
Unsprung weight is the enemy of enjoyment.
>>
>>29107502
You forgot twin stick
>>
>>29107853
You can build a vehicle right now with 4 ebike kit wheels. As someone already said there would be a lot of unsprung weight, unless you can make the tires springy.

I have a small 1000w motor on my ebike and it slams around. Wheel is not a good place to have weight.
>>
>>29107751
>shreds ur transfer case
>>
>>29108178
look man I didn't say it would be good I just wanted to know if anyone had ever done it
>>
>>29107717
If the driveshaft runs UNDER the crank it makes the engine sit higher. If you run beside the crank the engine can sit lower. Pretty simple.
>>
>>29107502
>manual front wheel hubs
not this, getting out in the mud and snow sucks

Wait until you see a defender with both axles having the ring and pinion offset to the right hand side.
>>
>>29107492
Ditch the Transfer case.

Put a transverse mid-engine in the back and a pair of electric motors in the front with a battery pack in the middle.
>>
>awd
meme

Quattro.
>>
>>29108372
this looks like the same shit as the subaru
>>
anything with the engine forward of the front axle should be referred to, going forward, as Gay Wheel Drive (GWD)
>>
>>29108203
It's right there beside the crank, are you blind
>>
>>29108497
It is.

Oops!
>>
>>29108497
The good AWD systems from Subaru and Audi are laid out similarly, yeah.
The problem is that most Quattros are not like that, most have transverse engines and a bunch of transfer bullshucks.
And not all Subarus get their good system either (esp auto/CVT ones) but they’re generally still longitudinal with a simpleish symmetrical setup at least.
>>
>>29107492
Why is it always Subaru that draws ire from you fags for engine overhang when literally every transverse FWD/AWD car ever hangs the entire engine and most of the transaxle in front of the front axles too? Never hear pissing and moaning about those yet they're by far the most prevalent layout for the vast majority of cars on the road.

Mid engine AWD, anyone?
>>
>>29108645
only A3 and TT have transverse engines

Yeah but then your engine has to look like this
>>
>>29107492
don worry there is the rear overhang monster system
>>
>>29107825
I had a 81 Tercel 3A 5 speed fwd was pretty good. Got great gas mileage.
>>
>>29108893
Based CoG optimizer.
>>
>>29108067
I wish I knew how to improve the ride quality without reducing unsprung weight which is impossible in my case. Stronger shocks? Softer springs? harder springs? It's all a trade off one for the other bullshit. Seriously wondering how I can retrofit a citroen style hydro-pneumatic system to my car.
>>
>>29109260
With semi trailing IRS just as god intended
>>
>>29109265
Yeah but then your engine makes 100kw and there's nothing you can do to upgrade it
