Why don't regular drivers use the CB radio station like Truggers do? I can see it being useful for the serious drivers.
>>
All I can imagine this turning into is a real life Xbox live lobby
>>

For enthusiast drivers? Sounds pretty good.

I don't want to talk to normies.
>>
>>29111670
Normies would just use google maps and listen to some retarded music. No way would they chat up the station.

In many EU countries holding a mic while driving got outlawed and CB radio over hands free is lame so everyone stopped doing it
>>
>>29111655
Since it's not moderated in any way the CB is as big a shithole as it is here, even though it may be fun occasionally. Most people don't want to listen to hours of verbal shitposting.

Further, what's REALLY ruined the CB in recent years is the skip jockeys using stupidly overpowered equipment so that they can talk across continents. Of course this washes out any local talk so you're bombarded with endless whistles, "aauuuuuudio AauuuDio, AAAAAUUUUUDIO" from that clown near Columbus, and hours of Mudduck tirades, so you just turn the radio off. Eventually the radio ends up staying off.

This is very illegal on paper but I don't know how it's enforced in the U.S.

It's not
>>
>>29111777
>This is very illegal on paper
Yes.
>how it's enforced in the U.S.
It isn't. The FCC basically abandoned the CB frequencies to its own devices back back in the 70's during that flare of popularity at the time. About the only way to get any FCC action on the 11 meter band now is to interfere with somebody on another band. Keep your shit in the 11 meter and you're golden as far as FCC action is concerned.
>>
>>29111777
How are they supposed to enforce it? They'd have to constantly triangulate your position while trying to run you down. It also won't work cause everyone else on the radio will just say "wow look at all these cops blazing past lookin' fer someone" and the jackass will suddenly shut up, ending the trail.

They'd have to set up stationary listening posts that log everyone or some other draconian shit.
>>
>>29111662
ive heard that cb radio basically already is like an xbox live lobby

and on FRS i once had a group of teenagers try to fight me for some reason

i have a HIGHLY ILLEGAL memefeng and on the usual ham frequencies it's all retarded geriatrics talking about typical boomer shit once a week

Window licker. Skip works both ways.

And the most egregious example would be the still-infamous Mud Duck. The info below is Ai generated but accurate to what was known at the time. The fraud that it mentions is from allegation that he would take peoples radios, and their money, to produce a unit that worked like his and then he would not deliver anything. Fwiw he did have the most professional sounding rig I've ever heard. Most have varying levels of distortion and you can tell who's who by that.

------------------------------------

"Mud Duck" is the handle of Mark Sherman, a notorious CB and ham radio operator from Lordsburg, New Mexico, who gained widespread notoriety for jamming Channel 19—the primary emergency and calling channel for truck drivers across North America.
Who is Mud Duck?
• The Operation: Operating out of his home with an illegal, ultra-high-power setup estimated near 10,000 watts (far exceeding the legal 4-watt limit for CB radios), his signal could override local transmissions coast-to-coast for 2 to 12 hours a day.
• The Behavior: He frequently used the channel to broadcast endless monologues, insult truckers (famously calling them "window lickers"), and drown out crucial local traffic, weather, and road emergency updates.
• Public Backlash: His heavy interference led to driver petitions (including a Change.org Petition) and dedicated watchdog sites like mudduckfraud.com urging the FCC to shut him down.
Reports and community discussions indicate that his broadcasts have grown quiet, with online reports stating he faced legal troubles related to fraud and that his online channels were taken down
>>
>>29112204
he's in jail for unrelated disability fraud charges
>>
The one time I used a CB, it was just a bunch of truckers looking for hookers using a few different nicknames and they all got nuclear mad when we asked if they were talking about hookers.
>Any professionals out there? I'm looking to get some work done tonight
>You mean a prostitute?
>SHUT THE FUCK UP GET OFF THIS CHANNEL RIGHT NOW WHERE ARE YOU I'LL KICK THE SHIT OUT OF YOU
Meanwhile, me and 3 other idiots are giggling in a minivan parked at a Wendy's.

Most truckers are Jeets and they're busy talking to their relatives back in India. Nobody uses it in the trucking world anymore. Around here it's really only used on active log haul roads where it's actually mandatory. I've heard even they're switching to UHF or whatever.

They seem to stick to channels other then 19. You can pickup someone doing it on channel 6 almost everyday. I haven't heard mudduck or anyone doing it on 19 in a while. But it does happen on 19 for sure.

Grounding plane.
Where the antenna is attached on the vehicle can cause transmission to be directional. Like someone in front of you can hear you but not someone behind you.

The "grounding plane" i mentioned isnt electrical. Its how the radio waves are reflected from the metal chassis of your vehicle.

No, it's the Cobra 19.

29 is just a bigger version of the 19 with more options. They have the same issues.
If its the old chrome/silver face version they used a glue that breaks down and becomes conductive and shorts out the circuit board (not sure if the black ones have the same issue, they might). Dont turn it on again until you pop it open and clean off the glue. Theres videos on YouTube but basically just gently scrub with a soft tooth brush and isopropyl alcohol to get the residue off.

The mic is a 4 pin dynamic and has separate circuits for tx and pa. 20 bucks says the switch is bad, its a common failure. If cleaning doesnt fix the issue, buy a cheap mic off ebay to test.
Last guess would be a bad capacitor. That means soldering.
>>
>>29113438
Intent matters.
>>
That reminds me, need to fix that 29ltd I picked up for free and get it in my new truck.

Dude had it on the shelf in his garage. I saw it and asked about it. He didnt want it because it didnt work. I took it home and popped it open just to see if it was something obvious and saw a burned out trace like an inch into the circuit board coming in from the 12v+ plug.
Should be an easy fix with a jump wire i just always forget.
Ive always ran a wilson mag mount on toys or dual 102s if I was serious (ya im fucking old) but im thinking of getting one of these fiberglass firestik dealios (i remember when they came out if you really want gauge my crustyness)

people meme on this stuff once in a while but people use "guard" frequencies to shitpost all the time. it's less of a thing now because radio is less of a thing (and enforcement got better) but stories abound of people sharing spaghetti recipes and calling eachother spics on Channel 16

idk about air or land but in the maritime world what mostly killed that was better knowledge of what are open and shared frequencies in given areas. instead of having to call ahead on a land line you had to find in a phonebook you can just like look it up. so people shitpost on Channel 69 (unironically, 69 is unreserved basically everywhere so it's a standard "working" channel so it's mostly tradies telling eachother to stop the crane and then getting bored and asking about eachothers' days)

I forgot about that model. Still a 90s model so you should definitely do the alcohol scrub.
>>
>>29116932
Sitting at my PC now, brought it inside and took it apart. so I just wanna hit the whole underside of the circuit board with alcohol and a toothbrush?
Sounds easy enough.
>>
>>29117482
looking at youtube, or at least youtube comments, it seems the issue with cobra 19s is a chip on the underside of the board that gets covered with glue that eventually turns conductive?
but mine has no chips on the underside...
I guess I can still alcohol it, whenever I find the ole isoprophyl (idk where it went)
>>
>>29117524
Its used in multiple places, mostly on the top side but can be on the bottom aide also.
The glue turns black. And an issue is it can drip from the machine during manufacturing and be in random spots also.

Ah thanks for the tip, as a maritime bro I will try to listen on that freq (most modern radios allow a dual listen with 16 for those who wanna legal @ me)
>>
>>29117831
im pretty sure youre legally required to listen and be able to transmit on 16 on any boat bigger than a canoe
>>
>>29117556
very informative video, makes me wonder if I should take apart my old Cobra 26 again and look for black glue...
as for the 19 though, I don't see any black glue splotches anywhere, so I guess it's safe from that particular defect.
>>
>>29118623
gonna go stick it back in the car today
maybe I can park my van (also has a CB) close enough to hear myself over the other CB as a test.....
or just go pick up my brother and get him to help, lol
>>
>>29118623
Its worth doing it just for piece of mind. I would even do it on non-cobra radios (if I had any). All the cobras ive popped open had the glue. Although in the past ive cleaned glue that hadnt turned black yet.
>>
Another problem is lack of interior real estate in modern cars and trucks to even fit a radio
50s and 60s full size cars could fit literal base-station sized boat anchors under the dashboards
>>
I feel like part of it was the decline of Trucker Culture, but id say the majority was more from cell phones and other tech rendering them unnecessary, as my maps app tells me when there's an officer or traffic up ahead.
>>
>>29119123
There are more compact newer versions available on Amazon.

I have some comfy memories of cross country road trips in the 80/90's

Dad got a CB radio for the car. You could monitor the trucker chatter for road conditions or ask for information from the pro's on good places to stop or directions. Very handy when all you got are paper maps from AAA and mapquest didn't even exist yet.
