>15 year old platform (mqb dates to 2012, new atlas has same wheelbase as before, barely updated)
>30 year old engine (technically the EA engines started in 2007 but I don't think the block was substantially different from the 1995-era EA 113 (which, before it, was an engine designed in the 1960s, so precedent for old ass engines is there a la Jaguar) - the only difference I can find is that the EA 288 has half mm less thick cylinder walls but I think really its just a mild revision of the 1995 engine
I've driven it, it drives like a 90s engine - rough and crude
>cheap black plastic interior with worst quality plastics stolen from Toyota
>touchscreen you have to interact with to do basic things a la Tesla
>and, 60k for what is effectively a refreshed version of a now 10 year old car.

VW is dying, right? They don't have long. They don't sell anything truly new.
>>
>>29113400
Their EVs were on a new platform, weren't they? Though they ruined them with the same glossy touchshit as the regular MQB Evo cars.
They might release a better interior in the new ID.Polo EV next year, with actual buttons and other ultra premium luxuries.
>>
>>29113436
I suppose it is their newest platform, but that's not saying much, it's nothing close to brand new at this point (2019), the MEB electric platform was developed in desperation after dieselgate, and was rushed and never praised for the quality of its offerings including too-small batteries and rough cheap interiors.
>in the new ID.Polo EV
no its all meb slop
evs are stupid, vw puts no effort into its interiors which are now almost identical from polo through nice audi
they had promised to replace meb a few years ago, knowing it is hated/shitty and haven't followed through yet, but they BADLY need to overhaul their gas engines and gas platform
>>
>>29113521
Yeah, the MQB has definitely been around for long enough by now. It wasn't terrible when it came out, but as OP said, it's been 15 years. And the Evo touchshit ruined whatever good parts there were.
It's like they doubled down on their shitty plastic engines and fragile DCTs, and created a platform just for them so they could efficiently re-use a set of mediocre powertrains across 50 car models. Of course they then had 50 cars sharing the same platform, and no way to e.g. make a decent hybrid car since a Toyota style eCVT box wouldn't fit into the thing. And if they revamped the platform, they'd then have 50 obsolete models that need an upgrade.
The PHEVs released since then are just gasoline cars with the electric bits bolted whereever they fit (see >>29111318 for how that worked out).

They're supposed to release actual full-hybrid Golf and T-Roc cars somewhere around the end of the year. The hybrid tech sounds a lot like what Honda's been using for 10 years: series hybrid at low speed, one tall mechanical gear for higher speeds.
Might be a little late, but wonder how they managed to fit that in there, if they didn't re-design the entire platform.
>>
>>29113542
>one tall mechanical gear for higher speeds.
the reviews have said these 2-speed hybrids are lurchy on the highway because it automatically changes gears around 65 mph
>>
>>29113544
Suppose that might still beat the car being hesitant and lurchy as fuck everywhere.
Some of the earlier MQB cars with the DQ200 or similar dry-clutch box weren't too bad, but since they were prone to wearing out their clutch packs in city traffic within the warranty period (taxis were hit hard by this), the software was patched to avoid using the clutch after it hits a certain temperature. Since then, they've fucking sucked at the exact situation where even a fully sentient, non-retarded person might want an automatic.
>>
>>29113559
I tested an early 2000s GTI with the dual clutch - I think it had just gotten that and honestly both the engine and the transmission were supremely disappointing, the 1.5 engine is newer and less shitty I think (and the basis for most European VW hybrids I think)

there's nothing wrong with 8 spd automatic torque converters except that they are programmed for fuel economy and you cannot make them hold the engine in the power band esp for torqueless 4bangers

>30 year old engine
It's the best you're going to get since they're 100% dead set on not spending any time developing any new gas/diesel engines.
It's got the "monobar" headlights and taillights, plus the light-up emblems that consoomers like currently however. Consoomers also happen to like the Tesla-like touchscreen controls since it makes them feel like they're driving something fancy and current.
You have to consider that VW considered this trannyverse, pigfat 4cyl crossover as the replacement for the Touareg, which at least was decently competent for what it was trying to be with things like low range and locking diffs being options and engines such as V8s and even (diesel) V10s.
Your average burger (or chink for that matter) really doesn't notice the difference climbing into a FWD, 4cyl shitbox CUV on a car chassis.
>>
>>29114045
I think they will have new gas engines at least, but not for 5-10 years, and they won't use their 1.5 engine more in America, even though it is generally better than the 2.0, and they really should bring back a small displacement VR6 for larger models and sport editions - it was their calling card and a lot of Atlas buyers complain the 4banger isn't enough.
I don't know why VW offers a variety of undesirable, cheaply built EVs when it should have a hybrid version of the Taos and Tiguan with a 200 something hp 1.5T powertrain (and has these powertrains for Europe already).

Lmao you dumb fuck

Also
>It's old
So the fuck what? We've been breathing air for 6000 years but I guess that's due for an update.
>>
>>29114065
It's the same block dimensions and material specifications. Every single other manufacturer switched to aluminum block engines, entirely, without exception.

I'm hoping an aftermarket for supporting using these as 3.6L VR6 engine donors forms eventually.
>>
>>29113521
It's still MEB slop but the ID.Polo legitimately feels like an entirely different car. It's nothing special, but it's still lightyears above the ID3 which is truly astounding in how fragile and cheap everything feels.
>>
>>29114089
Maybe if it's FWD this time, it won't launch its rear tire studs and half the pavement surface at the car behind it so easily. The ID.3 almost seems like it's designed to do that, with its low rear overhang and poor grip.
The "sporty" Cupra Born variant is reportedly even worse.
>>
>>29114073
The EA888 just werks. No need to change it for the sake of making something less reliable with less after-sales support.
>>
>>29114426
it's incredibly rough and noisy like a 30 year old engine would be
they could also squeeze out more power with a clean sheet new block design
>>
>>29113400
We bought one in 2021 and it's the shittiest vehicle we have ever bought. The entire inside rattles and is plastic, pieces just stop working. Reminds me of the worst of the worst 90s cars when they were in the gutter.

Swore me off of ever getting another VW again for life.
>>
>>29114575
The VAG plastic has gotten really bad over the years. Drove a new Audi A3 Sportback for a while for reasons, and all that hard angular plastic and shiny sharp trim was creaking like crazy.
If I for some reason needed to create a device that turns subtle mechanical vibrations and thermal expansion into creaking plastic noises and rattles, I'd probably look at the A3's interior design for guidance.
>>
I loved my 2008 TDI, thing was a tank and the interior used nice materials and lots of non-gloss surfaces. everything was knobs or buttons. eventually got a ton of money for what was a nearly decade old economy car, but the new vw interior quality was way lower so I ended up getting a subie and adding a bunch of perrin handling upgrades.
>>
>>29114597
>2008 TDI
Yeah, I've driven a late 00s TDI Audi A3 in addition to the new A3 Sportback (the post above). The 2000s Audi felt a bit dated in terms of design, but was somehow more premium than the current A3. Nice, soft materials and cloth trim in the right places.
New one was all scratchy plastic and rattles, plus I think there was something loose inside the driver's door. The "sporty" seats also sucked to actually sit in.

No idea who they're making this shit for. Maybe they don't know either.
>>
>>29115515
somewhere along the line they just gave up

If I switched out the VW logo, and said this was a Changan, Geely, or other Chinese car, would you really know the difference? Truly a joyless interior. No design distinction, no unique features.
>>
>>29116328
I think a Chinese car would at least look more consistent. That thing seems to have
>the 2019 MQB Evo touchshit UI that they've been struggling to fix ever since
>a steering wheel from the 10 year old Golf Mk7
>the awful touch slider ramp below the touchscreen but then a separate control wheel near the cup holders (?)
>gear lever on the steering column like in their new EVs
>digital gauge cluster graphics from a VW Polo
>random mix of comfy materials, matte dark gray and some glossy shit where it's likely to get scratched quickly

I get that VW might not have the most agile supply chains in the world, but it still just looks like a mess.

At least their new interior design looks less like random junk from the VAG parts bin.
>>
>>29119325
stop making steering wheels that are not circles that alone shows you fucked up bigly
I mean yeah, it's less shitty than ID4, but its still MEB trash and its still cheap materials and not enough buttons and dials and VW is super nannyish about not letting you use the screen at all when the car is in drive.
>>
>>29119344
>not enough buttons and dials
>full climate control and defrost on buttons
>stereo control wheel
>button panel for headlights
>lever for wiper and indicator
>button panel for windows and mirrors
>19 fucking buttons on the steering wheel

>not enough buttons and dials
nigga watt, not even my 2002 audi has that many buttons
>>
>>29121562
there are no chunky knurled dials to adjust important things
steering wheels could have 3x the buttons they do now
I should be able to easily adjust the temperature with steering wheel buttons on EVERY CAR. Why should I have to reach over just to get comfy? Nobody who makes cars drives the crap they make.
>>
>>29122552
im glad designers dont listen to retards like you
>>
>>29122552
We are not the same...
>>
>>29113400
Gonna play the devil's advocate and say why using a old platform to update a car is a bad thing if it sells well
Renault kept selling the Clio4-5 at the same underpinnings for over a decade
So did Lexus with the is(it's in it's third facelift in nearly 15 years)
